Toward A Resilient Macroeconomic Vision for Africa | Africa Perspectives

Watch a conversation between Atif Mian, Professor of Economics, Public Policy, and Finance at Princeton University and the IMF’s African Department Director, Abebe Aemro Selassie, to explore the nexus between finance and macroeconomics, in light of the big funding squeeze that African economies face at present as well as the continent’s longer-term development needs.
African economies are currently grappling with a significant funding squeeze amidst tightening global financial conditions. At the same time, these economies face large financing needs to realize their developmental ambitions, including with respect to improvements in education and infrastructure.
Managing this tension in the short run, while minimizing the risk of crises, will present policy makers with significant challenges. Over the long run, strong and inclusive economic growth will require concerted efforts to foster financial development and financial inclusion to broaden credit access sustainably.
The IMF’s African Department is pleased to host Professor Mian, who directs Princeton’s Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy and Finance and is a world-leading expert on the interplay between finance and the macroeconomy, both in the short and long run. In this conversation, we will delve into the strategies and policies to navigate the complex landscape confronting Africa’s diverse economies, and to secure sustainable financing against the backdrop of significant global uncertainty.

To the team that organized the session, Thank you! My key highlight from Professor Atif was the need to have serious people/professionals being involved in the decision-making processes for example on how much external financing to acquire and also the idea of Macro-financial stability boards for low developing countries. Policy makers need to protect themselves from the double-edged sword. I look forward to the next session.

Saw IMF in the subtitle and couldn't go further. No vision of Africa should be influenced or considered by the IMF.

Did IMF deny the 2 billion dollars to Ethiopia? Traditional Americans are ignorant, if you keep supporting them you will help the concept "Getting as much money as possible without any need to control it" which actually made some resources and products irreversably damaged. Not using resources is fine, however traditional Americans are ignorantly damaging them beyond repair. They are too focused on gathering more than they can use and maintain. "Ethiopia" is filled with the best atmosphere especially after the Green Legacy thing. The only thing missing is financial security, which I am assuming can get better by IMF continuous sharing of benefits.
