Not funny

Was in Yellowstone in late September 2011. Cool early morning. Before 7am. Very foggy. Stopped the car at a break in the fog with a lovely vista showing in front. Another guy in another car was already there taking photos. Fog is still thick around and about us except this break directly in front of us. He turns to me and says, "get back in your car slowly. Do not turn around. Make no sudden actions. I'm doing the same. There's something close behind you." We each got back in our cars. I turned around in my car seat and saw a large bison 🦬 directly behind me. Just eating grass. Outlined as a dark figure in the fog. Amazing and intimidating but beautiful.

That's a Great Story You Have. But I think Mine might be a little Better. The pullout in the above Clip. Is in Hayden Valley, approximately ard Alum Creek, & Trout Creek by the Yellowstone River. IT was in Late May of 1997 a Friend & I were there at that same Pullout. With Oh Roughly 40 - 50 other People Present. After having been there Five to Ten minutes. One of the Other Tourists Said Hey You All. Look at What is Coming Out of the Trees across the Roadway?? Well LO n Behold it was a Three to Four Year Old Grizzly Bear 🐻🐻 that Calmly Walked alongside the Roadway, Roughly 40-50 yds From Us all Gawking at it. And then it proceeded Out into the Adjacent Meadows and Over the Rise down into The Trout Creek Valley. Man was that an Exceptional Experience and a Great Day. So anyways Thank You for Sharing Your Excellent Stories. May God Bless You.

We just left there. My guess is they were sitting watching some out in the valley and this big guy came up from the other side of the road. You have to have your head on a swivel, keep 50 yards away, and have an escape route at all times. And never ever approach them. We were leaving a very busy area near a waterfall and a Boston came through the parking lot and down a trail, people were smartly scrambling out of its way.

My aunt was walking towards a bison and wanted to get close to take a photo. This was in the 90’s when they had those cheap plastic Polaroid cameras that made a loud clicking sound when you press the button. She got to close and when that bison heard that loud click sound it jumped straight up into the air and charged full speed towards aunt Greta. She dropped the camera and ran away as fast as she could to get back to the car but then she tripped and fell down flat on her face. The bison running at top speed suddenly slid to a complete stop right behind her, then stood there for a second a bit confused , turned around and slowly walked away. Aunt Greta was lucky to walk away with a few scrapes that day.

They were in the designated area and the bison crept up on them. They left all their stuff in the chair and backed off to give him his space. So what exactly did they do wrong, since they absolutely were following the rules. I looked it up on Yellowstone Park website and you absolutely CAN GET OUT OF YOUR CAR as long as you are in the designated area, which they were. So what's your problem?

If the bison is totally covered, you are about 100 yards away, a safe distance. If not, BACK OFF." LOOK IT UP. Once the Bison was too close, it was the right decision to not stand up. Obviously, the Bison did not react to the person in the chair like it would to a person standing that close. Those animals look a lot bigger when you see them in person.

When I went to Yellowstone, bison were roaming all over the place. One time a few came running down a hill near a pedestrian boardwalk; I just froze. Another time I was exiting a bathroom and a bison was blocking the door. Never approach them unless you are suicidal. Unfortunately, sometimes they just appear from nowhere. If I were in this person's position, I would have walked away long before this bull approached.

Fairly safe if you don't move and he is the one developing the situation. He is used to people after all and does not feel threatened. We were looking at mountain goats last month and not paying attention to what was happening near us. When we put down our binoculars there was a bison very close to us. We just backed away slowly.

@@feuerling It appeared to me that they were on the other side of the car from the bison, waiting for him to move off so they could recover their stuff. I think they handled the situation pretty sensibly. It might have been better to get into the car. The bison was just calmly grazing, not showing any sign of aggression.

Bison are such big and beautiful animals. Back in the 80's I took my boys to yellowstone and they were roaming all over the park. My boys and I were watching them and one approached us from behind while we were outside our car. We just slowly walk away. He just looked at us. My boys said that he looked like he was smiling at them.

I grew up RIGHT next to a road that i would walk as a child, then drive next to as a young adult, past a guy who owed about 20 bison. Huge stretch of land. As an adult now, growing up right next to it, i never understood the significance of that treasure, as it was just normal for me to see. In my early 20's, in the middle of the night someone....a horrible person, shot and killed 2 of them. Shortly after that, as they were not caught, the man decided to relocate them. I still drive past that plot of land, which now has about 500 homes built on it, and think about how cool it was that i got to experience those amazing beasts and miss seeing them every single day.

All those idiots who willingly approached those majestic animals like there was nothing to fear are suicidal and were asking to be harmed by those animals just for ratings!

In 2007 I was fishing on Slough Creek in Yellowstone. I came out of the willows on the streambank, intending to wade to the other side of the creek, at the same time a bull bison came out of the willows on the other side of the creek, about 15 feet away from me, probably intending to cross in the opposite direction We looked at each other, both backed off, and reached an accommodation. He stayed on his side, and I stayed on my side, and we were both happy.

There isn't anyone at all in the chair!! So glad of that! The bison didn't feel threatened. That helped. Being far across the whole road next to cars is good.
