    Ahh exciting that you’re moving here! If I don’t get the video up in time, my tips are: (1) Zillow is prob the most comprehensive list of apts in seattle (2) you will find more cheaper options on fb marketplace and even Craigslist. They aren’t as comprehensive but they include some smaller apartment buildings that don’t always have a listing on Zillow and (3) walking around on google street view to vet out the area/u can find apt buildings that way too bc most apt buildings have a name on the front of the building that you can later google. Hope this helps!!

    Not going to try to guess which apartment you chose, just commenting to let you know I lived at Harbor Steps for 11 years and LOVED it! I moved into my first Harbor Steps apartment, a 600 sf studio facing onto 1st Ave on the 3rd floor (the "low rent district") just 3 days after the building got it's Certificate of Occupancy in July of 1997. It was a wild experience, as all 4 elevators were being used as freight elevators, and both 1st Ave and Alaska Way were blocked off to allow moving van parking. My first apartment was pretty noisy due to 1st Ave traffic noise, but otherwise a very comfortable home for the 5 years I lived there, especially after I was able to talk the management into having window screens made for my windows. My second apartment at Harbor Steps was also a studio, but larger, almost 800 sf, on the 2nd floor of the same building and overlooking the Post Alley courtyard area, with a slice of view of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains, and the ferry docks. I lived in that apartment, and loved it, from 2002 to 2008, when the housing implosion hit. I had been working as a work-from-home residential architectural drafter and designer and lost everything in June/July of 2008, eventually ending up on the couch of a good friend for what I had hoped would be a few months and ended up being the next 5 years. It's been 9 years since I left Seattle and moved to Post Falls, Idaho to care for my terminally ill mother, and 14 years since I lived at Harbor Steps, so much has likely changed in downtown Seattle since then, but I can tell you I always felt very safe any time of day or night on the streets of downtown Seattle and walked just about everywhere I wanted or needed to go. Seattle has a GREAT public transportation system that I also used a lot, as I didn't own a car. Harbor Steps is now one of the older of the huge downtown apartment buildings, and I'm kinda surprised at how low the rents you quoted were, as it was the premier address for it's first few decades. I miss living there to this day, and while I've lived in my current apartment longer than I've ever lived anywhere my entire life, I loved the 11 years I spent at Harbor Steps, some of the happiest and more dynamic/vibrant years of my life. I'd move back in a heart beat, if I could afford it.

  • @swangxswang

    @swangxswang

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi Sarah!! Good question - I usually start browsing Zillow/fb marketplace/Craigslist about 2-3 months out to get an assessment of price. You can probably start calling places 1-2 months out. Things do move fast! If you find a place you like, the apartment complex will hold the rent offer for a few days and then you’ll have to sign in the next day or two to get that price before the price fluctuates (and most likely goes up). Some places you call will tell you they have a unit available in a month that you can sign now or in other cases, the unit is already available and it’s just first come first serve. I’ve been able to find a place within a week twice before so you don’t HAVE to start early. You’ll just have more options/be able to be a bit pickier the sooner you start. Hope this helps! :)

    This is your first video that I've seen, so I don't know if you're just out of college or a little beyond that. Thanks for the tour, it was cool to see all the options out there. I was a little struck by your perspective on friends. I just moved back to Seattle last year after living in Korea for over 10 years. The few friends still in Seattle are actually now spread all over the suburbs, including across the Sound, with only one living at the northern edge of Seattle. And in Korea, my friends were all over the Seoul metropolitan area. So what I'm trying to say: consider yourself lucky. Having a number of friends be a 20 minute walk away is a luxury and a huge blessing! But definitely be aware of safety, as you noted in one of the options. As someone born and raised here, it's really painful to see how much more dangerous and dirty the city has become. Seems to be slowly getting better since last year, but still a long way to go. Hope you're enjoying your apartment after a year!

    Hi! I loved the tour! :) I am potentially going to be moving to Seattle soon and this has been really helpful! I do have a question, is Seattle a walkable city? I won't be having a car if I do move, and I heard you mention that several of your friends don't use cars there.

  • @swangxswang

    @swangxswang

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think it is! I lived here for 2 years without a car and it was fine. My boyfriend moved here with his car in the past year and a car doess help a lot to get to nature outside the city and also get to places in the city faster. The public transportation will take you where you need to go but sometimes it’s really inefficient. Each neighborhood is really walkable within itself tho! Summarized: I usually recommend a car because it improves convenience but it is not a necessity :)

    As much as I think Seattle and just the entirety of Washington state is beautiful, I just can't get over the fact that it's ridiculously expensive to live and have a life there. Of course I would love to experience living in Washington but I just can't get past that fact. I live in Florida and I gotta say, for the price of that apartment, you could easily live in a 3000+ sqft home with a decent property and a pool in Florida. I just bought my home in January of 2021 for $210,000, a new construction with 1560 sqft, 3bd 2 bth 2 car garage on just over a quarter of an acre and my mortgage is $1123/month.. Granted, I live just over an hour away from Tampa and 45 minutes from Sarasota and Ft myers but the fact of how living in Florida vs the west coast is significantly less is the reason I don't try and venture out there. It really is a bummer since living in or somewhat near Seattle was always a dream of mine..

    Seattle has become a city for rich people and many people have had to move out of the city for more affordable housing. Corporate landlords keep raising the rents. When you say "safe areas" you mean poor people that are suffering from low wages, homelessness and struggling to survive. That is because it is an economy based on greed. Downtown looks desolate because of this. Please fight for the homeless so they can have a decent place to live as well. Many die on the streets. Housing is a human right. City administrations have failed the people and because of ruthless billionaires that create poverty with low wages and terrible working conditions and unemployment. For the past forty years safety nets have been slashed due to corrupt politicians and faceless landlords and bankers etc.
