I've found Korg synths to be reliable and they also sound very good. Thanks again and I'm looking forward to listening to your band.

    Excellent breakdown, Antoine! Very informative. Thank you very much! I'm considering getting an Arturia Keylab 88, myself, for live use. Right now, I'm using a Roland X7 workstation with a Roland JV-90 as an extra, external controller to control the Fantom. This allows me to have both keyboards with multiple zones on each keyboard, producing multiple sounds/samples from the Fantom. Your setup is very impressive, though (not sure I'm ready to go "full computer"...LOL). Since I am not a piano player (my main instrument is rhythm guitar), I wanted to get a MIDI controller that has a "semi-weighted" action, but there aren't many options out there with the features I want (knobs, faders, pads, aftertouch, etc.). I'm hoping the action on the Keylab 88 isn't too stiff. I also need to get a portable Mac. I spent a bunch of money on a tiny, powerful PC, but Mainstage really looks like what I want to use, in terms of features and ease-of-use. Anyway, thanks again!!!

    Make a suggestion I always buy extra adapter than cool it's in the wires when I'm performing I plug everything up and tape tape or bread wrappers and wrap everything together as one wire or two wires all the adapters Plugs and wires to speakers and I taped them together or bread wrap them so that when I get there everything is already plugged in Who easier to plug-in needless to say you have to buy an extra adapter extra plugs and wires good that's only for the performance everything is stuck together I also leave it inside the gate bag leave everything plugged in faster well I get that you have to buy extra adapters for the house

  • @AntoineMichaudGuitar

    @AntoineMichaudGuitar

    3 жыл бұрын

    The action is decent for a keyboard controller as lightweight as this one. Definitely good enough for my needs. But I have to say, now that it's been a few years, the keys got looser and looser the more I brought the keyboard to rehearsals, venues, and on planes, even if I tried to pad it as much as I could and bought the most sturdy hardcase I could find. Now, I bought another one and stored it in Europe so that I wouldn't have to bring it on planes. I think for a real pianist, this is only 'decent' ... you might get some better and more realistic action on some bigger, weigthed keyboards. And like I said, there are some question marks on durability when you move it a lot. So for a guy like me who plays prog and all sorts of parts (piano, strings, moogs, B3 organs, electric pianos, etc), I like the flexbility and amount of buttons, sliders, pads. But strictly for piano this is not the best option, in my opinion!

    From my computer, it's a USB cable that plugs into the interface. From the interface, it's two 1/4inch cables that go on each of my studio monitors when I'm at home, or generally on a D.I box when I'm playing live (and that D.I box is handled by the soundman). Another detail is that I'm using TS cables for my studio monitors, but regular TRS cables when I plug live into a D.I box.

    Hi Antoine, I’m currently doing a residency and use a keylab 61, Yamaha p115, and new MacBook 16gb M1. I’ve been having issues with functions that I assign not sticking, such as assigning a filter one-knob plugin to any knob on the mk2. When I open, close and reopen, it doesn’t keep some of the functions I assign. Secondly, tonight, while performing, my pitches on both the p115 and mk2 started jumping in pitch. I could only tell by ear, and putting a pitch reader plug-in on my main output to verify that a C was making a Bb pitch. I had a temporary work around that worked for a half hour and then went back to having a mind of its own. I know how long winded this is, but I’m desperate for help and was wondering if you’ve had any of these same issues. Thanks!

    Basically, my audio interface is connected USB to my computer. So for shows, I send 2 instruments cables from the output of my audio interface to a stereo DI (or 2 seperate DI boxes) and the signal is sent to the board to the soundman. The audio interface is the middle step between my computer and the mixer to make sure I will have high sound quality, low latency, and have a place where I can connect cables and send my signals.

    Thanks for the video! Question - what is your MacBook sitting on? Is it the keyboard, or does your keyboard stand have an accessory to hold your laptop as well. Also, when you are performing on stage, where do you place your audio interface? On the ground?

    Daryl O Yes it's a an extra extension accessory mounted with a screwdriver behind the keyboard. It comes with the Keylab 88 when you buy it! Very easy to install and remove. And for the audio interface, generally I ask for some kind of table that I can put it close to my setup for extra safety. If I can't, it's not the end of the world, I would put it just on top of its box on the ground.

    Thanks - this is really helpful. I just checked the Arturia website and the extension accessory is such a great idea. I'm just looking at options now for stand, accessories or small table. I think at the end of the day, musicians just want a slick set up with good access, that can be packed up and packed down easily, gig after gig.

    I have DIYed a keyboard stand with flat surface for my interface (right beneath the keys) , then velcroed keyboard bottom (49-61) and velcroed keyboard stand, and finally second tier stand. It all packs into keyboard bag and into the trolley that can be moved easily along with other gear. Unfortunately its a pain to assamble / dissasamble . Takes way too much time. I imagine having some sort of a portable speaker might help in some really bad monitoring conditions, also having interface that close means I can plug my phones easily. Sometimes I ask soundman to send me monitor mix into my interface (umc404), where I can dial between input and output in my phones. This is really cool, as I have good representation and control vs bad monitors and ear-bleeding levels. Fighting with guitarists for monitor is fun only couple of times.

    Hi Awesome set up 👍🏻 When you scroll through your patches for different sounds for songs are the changes instant ? Is there a delay for the sounds loading ? For live it needs to be fast Thanks,

  • @AntoineMichaudGuitar

    @AntoineMichaudGuitar

    All the sounds load beforehand (it takes about 30 seconds to open my file because all the sounds are preloading), so yes the changes are instant! And even better, when I hold my sustain pedal and change the patch, the sound of my previous patch still sustains over the new patch automatically. It's really nice to make seamless transitions between patches!

    Awesome, I was hoping for that, do you use a lot of layers & splits ? If so is there any problems with latency ? Do you need to be careful how many sounds you stack ?? I'm thinking of going from all hardware which I'm sick of humping around to a very similar setup to what your using . Just worried about latency and not been able to stack many sounds up per song.

    Hi there - love this video! I’m fairly familiar with mainstage and am slowly transitioning from using it for Musical Theatre to popular music gigs - I would love to know how you deal with last minute set changes/cuts and patch changes. My last gig I was constantly running into trouble where we would add an extra song either just before or - in some cases - mid gig, and I was unable to retrieve the sounds quickly enough. Mainstage is a great tool, but relies heavily on programming which often takes time and I’ve found other musicians are not tolerant of this... would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks

    In my case, I already load all patches of all songs we have ever rehearsed together, even the songs that are not on the setlist. So I am ready for any change. I have to say that I create unique patches for each song, since I play progressive rock, it's all 15+ minutes songs, so each song has it's unique set of sounds I need and I make some pretty tight splits and layers so I have to change patches as less as possible. If your patches are for instruments (and not built for specific songs), I agree it's trickier for last minute changes. So if it's possible for you, I would create patches for each song. Unless you are playing covers and would needed 100+ sets and patches, I have never had Mainstage freeze or have problems because my concert file is too big.

    How do you able to control the 2 keyboards with one sustain pedal? where is the pedal sustain plugged-in?

  • @AntoineMichaudGuitar

    @AntoineMichaudGuitar

    6 жыл бұрын

    It was pretty complicated actually. But everything is doable in Mainstage! The sustain pedal is plugged into the 88 notes controller. Then, inside mainstage, I have dragged 2 simple buttons and assigned each of them to CC64 (which is often the code associated with sustain). I assigned the first button to the 88 keys controller and the second button to the 49 keys controller. Finally, I told the second button to be active whenever the first button is also active. So everytime I touch the sustain pedal, it activates the sustain for the second keyboard, so I can sustain both of them at the same time. If ever I don't need sustain on both keyboard on one specific patch, I can deactivate that function on that specific patch only. Unfortunately, this is all I'm able to tell you. I was able to pull that off one year ago and duplicated every single patch I made since then. So I would not even be able to make a clear tutorial on it as the exact steps on how to do it are kind of blurry in my head. Sorry!

    Mon Macbook est connecté à mon interface audio Focusrite par USB, et je plug deux cables 1/4 dans les outputs de mon interface audio vers soit le mixer en pratique, ou dans un D.I. que les ingénieurs de son vont acheminer eux-mêmes vers leur console en show. L'interface audio comme intermédiaire assure que le son acheminé sera de bonne qualité et aussi pour avoir les plugs nécéssaires (on ne peut pas plugger des jacks 1/4 direct dans un Mac haha!).

    Never used it on any studio work yet, but will certainly do it soon as I will work on the new Mystery album for 2018. As for the software vs. hardware, there is no debate to have on my part, really... The only reason I made the change was to cut on the weight of my setup for travelling. That's pretty much it. I like the quality of the sounds on my computer a lot more than I expected!

    Do you have any latency issues with your Mac/mainstage and software synths ? And how fast does it load eg. a very large sample library for eg. Kontakt ? I am asking, cause I'm dabbling a little at home with some PC solutions, and like the possibilites in the software solutions much more than buying top of the line hardware synths every couple of years, but I am extremely picky about latency, as I simply can't accept very much latency. Just 6-10 ms annoys the hell out of me. Even so called "experts" says you can't hear latency under 15ms i think, I very much disagree. Already at 5ms I can hear that the sound isn't in "sync" with my playing. And large Sample libraries can sometime make "live" performance annoying or simply unusable if you have to wait 10-15 sec. for a sound to load, wich usually arent a big problem for home/studio usage, but on a stage would be a completly no go. I am a PC guy as I still think you pay way too much for a Macbook Pro, But compared to the VST hosts that does the same things as mainstage available on the PC platform, even tho I havn't tried it (cause I don't have a Mac), Mainstage has a much better user interface than anything available on the PC platform.
