Hello David. Great guide. We are about to take the leap into Sunday Sounds, and this has been incredibly helpful. Been using a MAC for presentation software for about 5 months now, so I can use it, just don't like the lack of user friendliness of the MAC. But, Mainstage is best way forward at this point, so I will continue pushing through. It looks like I need 4 USB ports. 1. keyboard, 2. NanoKontrol2, 3. Output to my Presonus USB interface, 4. Mouse (touchpad is too inefficient). My Macbook Pro is plenty powerful, but only has two USBs. Will a small USB hub work? I'm concerned that it won't handle all the inputs simultaneously.

your piano sound is great. I'm just getting into VSTs for live performance. I have an issue - I am getting a weird sound on my main stage / logic pianos (the Rhodes sound is fine). But the piano sounds like its underwater when I go from laptop to the Focusrite to a speaker / amp. I can't figure out how to correct this. Any ideas? Note - the pianos sound awesome (especially the Bosendorfer) through headphones) but not through the speaker/amp.

Very nice to have a listing like this. Is the M-Audio 88 still the "best" Midi keyboard choice if you're not so concerned about weighted keys?

  • @SundaySounds

    @SundaySounds

    4 жыл бұрын

It's one of our favorites for 88 key midi keyboards in that price bracket. They also make a weighted version (linked in the mid-range rig) that is a bit more expensive but also a great value. Lots of options to choose from though so if you have a local music store its worth spending some time there to see how different keyboards feel and respond.

Thank you very much for this great tutorial! David, would you recommend any electric piano that I can also use as a MIDI keyboard? See the thing is that we have two keyboard players in my church, and I am ready to spend a lot of time on learning MainStage and use my MacBook for the rig, whereas the other person is more of a traditional piano player and they would only play piano and MAYBE layer a pad if this option is available on the keyboard. So instead of buying two instrument (an electric piano and a MIDI keyboard) would you recommend any simple affordable electric pianos that we could also use as a MIDI keyboard for the rig? Thank you again a lot!

There are two possibilities he went over: In the first one, the keyboard, (or MIDI controller), connects to a laptop with a midi cable or a USB > MIDI cable. Then your sounds will go out into your mixer via your laptop's 1/8 inch jack input (like the ones your earphones has) throught a cable that has (1) 1/8 jack on one end, (2) 1/4 inch (the bigger jacks like instrument cables have) jacks on the other end. Those (2) quarter inch (1/4) jacks can go into a mixer straight, but it is highly recommended to go first into a direct box (D.I. Box) to reduce any grounding and humming noises. if you use a DI BOX you will need two more cables that go from the box to the big mixer, these are typically microphone style cables or XLR cables. This is the easy and cheapest setup to get your keyboard and your virtual instruments to come out of your PA system. If you need the other version that includes the audio interface, (and which the creator and many other professional musicians prefer), i can go into that set up too. It's very similar and there are only 1 or 2 key differences.

Dear Jose Rojas, what song are you trying to learn and whats Your level of playing? You did the right thing because you started and You have keys. Trust in God and do not give up. You can learn everyday. Even when You play for many years and that makes music awesome.

Just buy a workstation keyboard or synthesizer :) Roland FA, Yamaha MODX, Korg Krome, Nord Electro, etc. Pretty sure they cost less than than this setup(probably sounds better too) and you will have a more streamlined setup.

IDK that I have come across a keyboard workstation that was as user friendly as this MainStage set up though. When working with volunteers at a church, those things have tone taken in consideration. Also -- especially for portable churches.. a 61-88 midi controller is a lot easier to store and tote around than a full 88 key workstation.

But I will agree on the streamlined sound. My buddy used a motif /big sky / reverb pedal from his guitar rig and it sounded AMAZING.

Hi david and anyone, I’m still quite confuse on signal path on part 19:08 audio interface. Normally you connect your audio interface via usb to laptop. How do we send the output signal from computer to mixer/speaker?

You can do that with instrument cables out the back of the audio interface.

Use 2 quarter inch cables from the back of the interface to the speaker/mixer

You can control Sunday Keys with an iPad if it's also running on a laptop by using the Touch OSC app.

Thanks! Besides control, I'm assuming I can use virtual instruments on the iPad like Korg module, Animoog,, etc

A shame that you not only barely mention using Windows, your site has nothing about Windows at all. A LOT of people can't afford Mac's and/or already have Windows laptops, and you ignore them completely. Of course, you also don't mention used laptops, which makes me wonder... I worship using Windows, and yes, it's a little harder to get started, but my setup works fine. If you want to run Windows for any reason (including certain draconian repair policies), don't be discouraged! Ableton Lite on Windows works great, and there are a ton of free and low cost plugins that have great sound. Depending on the keyboard / controller(s) you choose, you may even get a few for free!

Sunday Keys does run on Ableton Live which is available for both Mac and PC users. We do also have quite a few Ableton video tutorials and free Ableton worship patches on our website that should help you and others get started. :) For pricing, Apple does seem to have lowered some of their entry level machines, such as the M1 Macbook Air which is often on sale for $799 and will run MainStage very well. Plus MainStage is only $30 -this makes it very easy for anyone who already owns a Mac to get started. Ableton Live Standard on the other hand is $449, while you can certainly use the lite version you might run into some limitations depending on what you are trying to do. A windows laptop that can run Ableton and last a while will likely cost $500-700. (we would recommend an i5-i7, 16GB ram, SSD) So in the end using new prices its pretty similar to a Mac Keys rig, both can make for really great keys rigs. For those on a limited budget, we always recommend using what you already have and planning your upgrade path around that. Hope that helps!

Thank you. Exact tips I needed. Not sure if you've ever played a Nord keyboard, but somehow that keyboard is used regularly with many teams... piano w/ pad layer. The pad sustains, although I do not own one, the volume pedal/ expression pedal, is assigned to the pad. The pad vol. can be lowered or raised up while playing the piano controlled vol separately. I'm not sure yet, but it sounds to me like I'm heading in the right direction using Mainstage or Ableton as a controller to do the same or better! Wow!!! I'm using an Mac Book Air. i5 processor. mc1889@sbcglobal.net
