This video came up after I was watching a QNAP setup vid... Its nice to see that there are people out there doing things right. Too many to list from this video, but everything was smooth down to battery back-up/power-regulation & heat exhaust from network room. LOL security! Once you start its addicting! When more network cable is used on cameras than PCs, toys ect... A+ in my book!

Do you have those alarm fog machines? So when the alarm goes off it fills the house with fog so you can't see. Or do you have some strobes?

The alarm fog machines require a special type of fluid, so it wouldn't work too well if you do Dj fog fluid. The idea of it being green I like, the only problem is i've never seen coloured* fog fluid. You could have green strobe lights to make it seem green. *English UK

MSDS says Distilled Water, Ethykene Glycol, Glycerin (mist), and Sodium Dehydroacetic. So closer to a VG/PG mix like vape juice but water based, bet that makes the heating elements fail like crazy!

One question about separate camera network. You've said that it prevents someone from accessing your home network if they access camera network, however I remember reading somewhere that vlans aren't meant for security, they are used for logical device separation and performance improvements (due to lesser amount of CPU interrupts generated on ARPs and other broadcasts). So are they a good method of isolating networks from intruders? I'm learning networking right now, so sorry if my question sounds dumb.

  • @lefteye129

Дмитрий Ковалёв i am sure he will reply but VLANs are also used for security. I think he said that it will prevent access to camera network if someone gets in home network.. since they will be on separate VirtualLans, access from one network shouldnt mean data on other can be accessed... very nicely done

  • @TheGeekPub

That sounds like a great video idea. With IOT devices making people nervous, a lot of us would benefit from knowing about VLAN's and setting them up, when to use them, when not to, why you use them to segment, hardware vs software? I'd definitely like to implement it, kind of hard getting a starting point..

I put in some D-Links about two years ago. Over those two years almost every single D-Link has failed and been replaced by an AXIS. The telltale sign of the D-Links demise is they will start locking up and have to have the power reset to them. This will go on for a month or two and then they just won't power on anymore.

I'm using it for opnSense (dual wan router), Windows XP (for mail server), CentOS for web server. Much better performance than running ESXi on the exactly same system setup.

It bothered me to the point I downgraded to the earlier version, but I have since switched to a Ubiquiti EdgeRouterX for a lower power solution over a dedicated PC. Observium picked it right up (snmp) and much to my delight it had this report and many others. I got my installation (OVA)from turnkey linux, it seems to be an earlier version but it works.

Pretty rad setup. I just moved in to a new house in January and have been building it out to my dream specs. Right off the bat I put in a 4 post APC rack, had a dedicated 30amp circuit ran for my 3000kva Rack UPS, and wired the home for ethernet. I had Fios at my Condo, but they didnt offer it here. I had to settle on a 100/10mg Cable Modem. I tied that to my Palo Alto firewall. I have Lan/DMZ/Internet zones on it. That goes out to my 2x24 port stacked 3750G-POE switch. I have at least a dozen vlans. Then for servers I have a Poweredge R710 running as an iSCSI San with a pair of R610's as ESXi hosts. I have a myriad of virtual machines. But most important to my is my Cisco CallManager enviornment, since thats what I do for a living. I also have a couple of 2800 routers to use for lab use as voice gateways. In my office I have a DX80, 8865, and a classic 1930's phone tied to an ATA. I have two Meraki AP's placed in the house. I have a Nest Thermostat, and 4 Nest smoke detectors. Then I also have 7 Lorex cameras placed throughout the house. I'm not super happy with the NVR, so I need to find a good replacement. I need to do a tour of my own when the house is finally complete.

Modem feeds to the router which handles DHCP then goes to my switch which handles bandwidth management. I have a limit set for my router and prioritized networking for my compute for work, and the other ports used for wired connections to my game consoles and home computer for the rest of the family. Korea's population is 50.62 million. About 1/4th the population of the USA. TL:DL - It's easier to provide gigabit for cheap when you live in a country the size of Indiana.

Ebay has incredible, unbelievable deals, in relation to what the equipment cost a year before when some fool (or some company under contract or long term lease agreement to bend over and take 10" of un-lubed man meat by buying a $50,000 server every year or every other year. Yes, that supports SOME jobs here in America, but in reality, it supports manufacturing in China more than anything here. Hell, I bought a particular server, that 4 years previous to my purchasing it on eBay, went retail north of $475,000 in 2010. I paid $1400.....in 2014. Took a truck and trailer (to quell confusion I mean a personal one driven everyday to work and back, parked in your garage, not an 18-wheeler) to get it. Several personal, day-to-day, face-to-face friends of mine- I host their commercial retail websites on the thing. One produces worldwide orders daily. I mean literally an item is ordered every day from every continent in the world (except antarctica, though the item his company is known for, hell it's in the title of the company, are on the intended market item/device which ARE presently in Antarctica). His business is tremendously succesful, and not because I do a great job with hosting/writing some of the site/managing it, but rather because he busted his ass from 14 years ago, refused to cut the smallest corner, no matter who WASN'T looking, no matter how much more the RIGHT metal alloy was for the job, regardless of how much he could save by downgrading alloys to something that would perform 90% as well. Some people are ok with a 50% price cut to lose 10% durability. Some are not. But by only having a top of the line-line for the longest, the public knew that his 'inferior' line, aka, 'economical' line came out and he promised a performance of xxxx/xxxxxx:xxx, people knew without a shadow of a doubt that his product would do it. He was recently bought out by an international conglomerate for God knows how much. Tens and tens or dozens and dozens of millions of dollars. He said he'd never been in the position to not know what it was like to not have to worry about money ever again and that it was almost uncomfortable. Anyways, his hard work from his garage led to lifetime financial security and makes me a nice little profit as well, as the conglomerate decided to keep his business just as is, but with their purchasing power on procurement of the raw materials, they will see an astronomical return on their investment because this guy's company's real value is the name. Work hard, don't compromise, and you will never wonder or need to ask how someone afforded anything. I mean that in a positive way, not a smart ass way, I swear.
