We were using the Baofeng UV8R radios with a MotoComm push to talk system on our bars. At first, I wasn't a fan of having to plug in every time getting on and off the bike, but after just a few days I realized just how incredibly valuable the radios were to us as we rode. The range was significantly better than any bluetooth wireless type of radio, so the trade off was well worth it. We were able to ride out of one another's dust, and communicate about oncoming traffic, trail obstacles, etc.

Hi Justin. My buddy on the Husky bought the IMS tank for the KTM TPI. I think it was about a 4.2 gallon tank but I'll check for sure. He had to a very minor modification to the tank up around the neck filler where you put in the injector oil. He heated it up and molded it every so slightly to fit on the Husky. I don't recall exactly how much TPI oil he carried, but you could buy 2 stroke along the way in Ketchum or Salmon. I had the IMS 4.2 gallon tank on my 500 and also carried a Giant Loop 2 Gallon gas bag. There are a couple of days where you need to put some gas in the gas bag and then dump it as soon as you can. I averaged about 47 mpg on my 500. The Husky 250 didn't do quite as well on fuel.....averaging low 30's to about 40'ish.

I was riding a 2018 KTM 500 EXC and Brent was riding a 2020 KTM 500 EXC. Charles had a 2019 Husky 250 TPI. Brent and I both had similar mods....we did all the standard stuff you have to do to get the EXC's to run right (remove reed cage in airbox, open up exhaust, fuel tuner or new ECU (we both had fuel tuners). We also both had resprung our bikes for our weights and the additional weight of gear, and both had installed aftermarket headlights and tidied up the taillights with aftermarket kits. We also both geared down slightly. I ran a 50 tooth rear and Brent a 52. We also both had Seat Concepts aftermarket seats (Comfort XL) which was a buttsaver for that many hours in the saddle. There were lots of other little things we both did specific to our preferences as far as ergonomics, tires, handguards, grips, luggage, etc., but nothing that we would change. Our bikes were rock solid and with exception to a smashed chain guide and lost masterlink for Brent on Day 1, we had no other significant bike issues.

We used the Baofeng UV-82 radios. They're readily available for cheap on Amazon. They're technically short-wave radios (so not "legal" without a short wave license) but you can hack them to use just a regular GRMS channel, but they use the higher power of the radio. This is what all my buddies and I use for regular trail riding, but we don't use the wired push to talk connectors on our bars. We just put the radios in a pocket of our KLIM vests and then have the small handheld mic clipped to the front. For the Tour, the only thing we did different was to buy some in-helmet speakers with a push to talk button on the bars which made it easier to communicate while riding and did not require stopping (whereas the way we use them when just "regular" trail riding, is that you pretty much just use them when you're stopped and need to communicate something to the larger group. Lots of videos on KZread about how to re-program them. It's been several years since I did it so I don't remember all the details, but I remember it involved a USB cable connected through my laptop (that came with the radio) to re-program them.

There are route variations for 1, 2, and 3 man teams on every day of the Tour. 1 man team route is typically shorter and "easier" overall for the day, although riding as a soloist is harder in other ways due to not being able to rely on any teammates for anything so the route variations try to account for that.
