Toughest Polytechnic Institution in Vancouver | A Student of BCIT

This here is the toughest Polytechnic Institution in Vancouver through the eyes of a student from BCIT. I hope you enjoy.
You won't do anything fun at this school without hearing your classmates ask the question:
"You had TIME to do that?"
30% of my class has either failed or dropped out of the program. I hear the drop out rates for engineering are even higher.
I'm convinced this is the highest workload university in Western Canada.
This is a video about the day in the life of a student at BCIT. If you are a student who is thinking about going to BCIT, check the BCIT website at BCIT.ca for more information about the school of BCIT, and information about BCIT and it's programs, such as BCIT's graphic design program, radiology program, learning hub, and more. Thank you for watching, and i wish you all the best in your journey at BCIT.

    I just graduated from the BCIT's CST program 2 days ago and I agree with everything you said in this video. It really was intense and was probably the most stressful time of my life. However, looking back, I'm super grateful for having gone to BCIT because it was a huge slap in my face that woke me up and forced me develop good habits and break bad ones. I've molded into a better version of myself and learned so much. Anyways, great video :)

Almost all my classmates who showed any initiative (including myself) got or was offered a job about half way through the program. Honda/Acura is easy too, almost no workload and the cars are ridiculously easy to work on. I basically stood on my phone all day.

    Hey! I was wondering what programming language was most prominent during the CST program and what would you say are the top 3 languages used? I ask because in computer programming 11/12 we learned python only and I'm hoping some of those skills will be transferable. One more question, how heavily used is calculus and pre-calculus during the program? Otherwise, great video! I was a student in 2019, my class was in the building to the right at 5:55 and all I did was sit on my phone all day. Maybe part of the reason I didn't pursue auto, its brain numbing to me.

    I’m a graduate of the Electrical and Engineering: Automation and Instrumentation diploma program at BCIT back in 2019. In terms of school life this video is right on the dot. Pretty much you need to sacrifice your social life due to the intensity of the program. Each semesters there are 6-7 courses and 4 of those courses have labs. My first semester really broke me down mentally and physically, I have to study/ do lab preps/homework/reports which takes me until 1-3am in the morning and wake up very early to go back to school my average sleep back then was 3-4 hours haha, then work on the weekends to pay for my tuition, but with the help of my family and also lessening my workload per semester I was able to continue and finish the program. I would say BCIT may even be considered as a prison for students but the learning they teach is really worth it especially once you start your job. If you survive BCIT, you can face anything in life haha. I’m not saying this to scare you from taking the program, this is just based on my experience. If you ever do pursue ECET, good luck and God bless! #ProudBCITAlumni!

  • @jesse_ryan

    @jesse_ryan

    4 жыл бұрын

    No worries! I fully agree. It depends what you mean by "retake" the program. If you are referring to students who fail/drop out, you can probably expect anywhere from 15%-30% of students to fail/drop out of a program in a given year (in one extreme case, my friend's entire accounting class failed except for him, but this was an unusual case in the summer school program; check the "rate my prof" website before taking a stand-alone summer course in the future). We had some students who had dropped out the previous year rejoin us the following year. Some of my friends also retook courses during the summer to up their grades. Other people were stressed out in the first year and had to take a 1 year break before coming back and trying again. Retaking really varies from person to person, but I hope the percentages above help paint a good picture.

  • @jesse_ryan

    @jesse_ryan

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey there :) I'm taking 9 courses in a single semester because BCIT doesn't let you choose your courses; only your program (see 1:52 in the video for details). The amount of courses per semester varies from program to program. There may very well likely be programs that consist of 5 courses per semester, but that is an unusually low number. Seven or eight is more common.

    There must be something in Reddit, just search for BCIT and ask your questions there, lots of people there to answer you.. but from what I have heard and what I know, all programs, even "the easier ones" are still pretty hard; I did Graphic Design ("one of the easy ones") at BCIT, I had to put lots of time into it.. now I'm in CST, yeah. my ass is being handed to me everyday. but it's worth it. the amount of support you get at BCIT is amazing. no complaints (well, just the whole .. 6-9 courses thing, etc lmao) Also, definitely just read the program page on BCIT's website.. it will give you an idea of what it's like.. being full time and having a set to go through it together is one of the biggest perks, I think at least. meh. good luck. stay safe.

  • @jesse_ryan

    @jesse_ryan

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes, you get summer holidays :) Summer vacation at BCIT is usually 3 months long, but it depends on the program you take so you should double check with your instructors. Your starting time and ending time of your courses are set by the faculty. Every program, and every semester is different. Some semesters I had class at 8:30am, and some days I had my first class at 10:30am. You can find timetables for courses in current and past semesters online :) I'd recommend contacting your instructors for the most accurate response regarding your program specific timetables.

  • @jesse_ryan

    @jesse_ryan

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@RbkDude Hey RbkDude, great question! Here are some tips for managing 9 courses in 1 semester: 1. Putting homework off till later will ruin your semester. Always finish your homework assignments the moment you get them and you will stay on top of your course load. 2. If you struggle with procrastination (like me), surround yourself with classmates who are hard-working achievers, and you'll begin to develop their work ethic habits. 3. Take weekends off, it's good for your sanity. Assuming you want to sleep 8 hours each night, 16 hours per day is more than enough time to stay on top of all 9 of your courses simultaneously. One of the main reasons people struggle at BCIT is when they are unwilling to give up their time doing the things they used to do before BCIT, such as playing videogames, watching netflix, going out, etc. If you have the discipline to perform the 3 points I mentioned above, you'll be more than fine. I hope this helps :)
