    When atmospheric pressure is lower, such as at a higher altitude, it takes less energy to bring water to the boiling point. Less energy means less heat, which means water will boil at a lower temperature at a higher altitude. Some people think that a lower boiling point means that foods will cook more quickly at higher altitudes. However, the opposite is true. If you want to boil an egg, it will take a bit longer at altitude. That's because cooking involves heating a food to a certain temperature for a certain length of time. If the temperature is lowered because of altitude (as in the case of boiling water), cooking time will have to be extended to complete the cooking process!

    I suppose you have a "pressure cooker" for a reason so it would go better at sea level or less than on the top of a large mountain. Once a liquid starts boiling it will resist temperature increase and rapidly dump the excess energy, meaning you will have to fight tooth and nail to get it any hotter. On everest, the boiling point will be 71 Celsius and no matter how big a camp fire you build you will not be able to get it any hotter (it will just evaporate excess water and stay the same temperature), meaning the potatoes will struggle to cook. The same for the parachutist question actually. At 5,000 feet you would expect slightly less air resistance on the parachute than at 2,500 feet meaning a faster fall.

    Question 22: At spot B only water will boil faster due to lower atmospheric pressure (PV=nRT), but boiling temperature will be below 100 C. Therefore cooking potatoes will take longer time at B.

    Number 7..... pressure is equal at bottom, only dependent on depth, which is equal for both containers. Force = Pressure x Area. The average force on "bottom" being a function of the area of the bottom. Both areas appear to be equal. So why is this answer not 'C'?

    @@mxwells216 Incorrect. The pressure is calculated by the weight of the column of water directly on top of it. If you're at the bottom of a 10' deep, normal swimming pool with sheer sides, the pressure at the bottom is the same as if you 10' under the surface of some pool with a gradual slope. I doesn't matter what's outside of that column of water directly above it pressing down.

    There needs to be commentary and explanations because the pulley question where one guy had a mechanical advantage of 4 and the other only had a mechanical advantage of 3 the man with the mechanical advantage of three should have had to pull harder. Because the guy with the mechanical advantage of 4 would have to pull the Rope further but it would be easier

  • @TimpBizkit

    @TimpBizkit

    2 жыл бұрын

    The lifting the 50 pound weight one would be equal as they both had a mechanical advantage of 4 because one pulled through 4 segments of rope and the other pulled a pulley through 2 segments of rope and that pulley pulled on 2 segments of rope, meaning you double the doubling. That second pulley arrangement actually works to the power of the number of pulleys. The answer to the one about the cart pulling is wrong though.

    @@briancarty9454 if you look at container a and b they both are at the same water level. But if you were to take container a and place it in container b you would see that container b is larger. water has a pressure of 0.43lbs per sq. inch. Container b has more volume of water thus more square inches. Also, imagine you were able to straighten the sides of container B. Has you do that the water level will rise, showing it has more water in it than A

  • @briancarty9454

    @briancarty9454

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Stonecon it may be counter intuitive, but that is not how you figure out hydrostatic pressure. It is (density of the liquid)x(gravitational constant)x(depth). It is independent of the shape of the container or how much water is to the sides. If the question asked which container applies more pressure to the surface it is sitting on, then the total weight would matter along with the area of the contact surface.

    @@cdurch1 so the answer would be a, according to your reasoning - higher altitude is a lower boiling point, that means it boils faster than normal. @@myrialynn correct, the potatoes will begin to boil sooner at the top, but at a lower temperature. Since its heat that cooks the potatoes and not that actual act of boiling, it will take longer at the top. Boiling point limits the temperature of the water, at whatever temperature the water begins to boil, the water will get no hotter than that. So at a higher elevation, you are stuck cooking at a lower temp. and thus longer cooking times.
