A long time ago, when I was first starting out as an indie dev, a more experienced dev warned me never to make a deal that gives any ownership to another company. I thought he was maybe being a little dramatic or just extrapolating from his own bad experiences. The more I work in this field, the more I think he was so right. Fuck giant studio owner companies, fuck publishers, fuck C-suite pirates. Long live the small team.

Double Fine filmed the entirey of Psychonauts 2’s development. Psychoddysey. It’s an amazing documentary.

That Doublefine clip is incredible. You can witness the morale of an entire company wither to dust in record time while the studio head desperately tried to offer the Microsoft bozo multiple outs that he didn't take because he had zero idea what was wrong with anything he said. It was just the most natural thing to his kleptocratic mind, that any game ideas you come up with while working for Microsoft automatically belong to Microsoft.

If you pitch an idea and it gets rejected but you believe in it enough to make it yourself without the backing of the studio, why would the studio then get a slice of your pie.

@@afrollamma8087 first of all, it is not clear to me that "in your free time" here means outside of work hours. Second, this was made back when non-competes were a thing. Third, it remains to be seen if non-competes WHILE YOU ARE STILL EMPLOYED can be enforced even with the rule changes

The new non compete stuff has been in effect in california since Jan 1 2024, double fine being california based. So, no, this wasnt made back when they were a thing and even if it was, why bring it up today then? And ion got anything for the 3rd point you might be right there I got no clue, but if it does somehow reach into your own time outside of work on a personal computer, then thats just plain silly like a lot of laws.

@@afrollamma8087 Well, I just told you - down time at work. It does happen, especially with contractors and work-from-home people. And if you are salaried, then strictly speaking, you have no personal work-time - any time you work not for the project you are paid for you are basically stealing some quality from the current project and putting it in your own pocket. Regarding the non-competes - afaik this is a part of the documentary for the making of psychonauts 2, a game that released in 2021. I might be wrong, though, that's just what I read on other comments.
