Its worth understanding that chords are just groups of notes from a given scale, the scale being the framework and you choosing which notes to use from that scale. Took me a while to get that......

Paul, I've been focusing on theory to improve my playing. This lesson has really flicked on the light. Whether open strings or barchords, it really opened my minds eye to the scale/chord inter-relationship. I'm amazed that it seems so much clearer after seeing your presentation. I've only been playing 6 weeks, but I've been practicing 4-6 hrs a day everyday. There are millions of other instructor choices to view on youtube, but you are by far the best I have found. If I could only get my pinky finger to move like yours, I'd be in business lol. I love the theory and science of music and how you explain it. Rock on!

How have I been playing this long and never realized that the Em pentatonic contains the same notes as the G pentatonic? Hello? Relative minor? That was huge: thank you so much! This is my favorite of your videos so far: I'm going to be unpacking this for awhile.

Just use the major scale to find the relative minor. It's always the sixth of the scale. Use the major formula TTSTTTS. T = tone which is two steps and S = semi tone which is a step. A step is just one fret up and two steps two frets up. So Cmajor you go C D E F G A B. The sixth note is A so Aminor is the relative minor of C major. Learning this stuff opens up everything.

This is a lot more elusive to people than you'd think. There's nothing quite like seeing the confusion on a first year player's face when you tell them it's not that much of a stretch to play chords and melodies at the same time.

Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull was a master at this kind of embellishment. Mother Goose, Thick as a Brick, and many more. Anderson threw in other nice little techniques too, so copying his guitar work you can learn a lot.
