Totally Destroying AR500 Steel Armor With An EFP
Ойын-сауық
Welcome to EFP vs Blank! Where the blank part is random targets we hit with an EFP aka explosively formed penetrators and we see what happens. These lovely devices can punch through even the thickest of hardened armor like it was a walk in the park. We have been experimenting with EFPs extensively and this is our refined prototype. It's performance has been stellar so far.
Today's target is a plate of AR500 steel graciously donated by @grizzlytargets808. These are commonly used on ranges as reactive targets as they make a lovely gong sound when struck with high velocity projectiles. The steel is very hard, rated at 500 Brinell. Hence the 500 in the name AR500. These targets can withstand a ridiculous amount of abuse, but can they withstand an EFP?

EFP - Explosively Formed Penetrator EFP is a type of shaped charge warhead and works on the same principle as HEAT warheads (Monroe Effect) but instead of forming a super-plastic penetrating liner, focuses instead on forming a 'bullet' which performs better against RHA and Composite armor but require significantly more stand-off distance to form the bullet for maximum penetration. Famously, Middle East Insurgents improvised a lot of EFPs to operate against Coalition vehicles in Iraq, and most recent use of these are in Gaza where they would plant the EFP in a hole on the road and would strike under Merkavas/Namer and proved quite effective.

EFPs use the Misnay-Schardin effect. This is why they are effective at range, as opposed to shaped charges (using the Munroe effect) which require a very specific standoff (not too close, not too far).

@@owensthilaire8189 depending on how they’re made the penetrator slug thats formed can go through armor at several hundred yards. We used to slide bullet proof glass between the armor and inner plate of the M115 side windows. It rendered the window usless but that was the only thing we ever saw stop ans EFP. . Big Army made us remove it because when they do get it, yes everyone survived but the glass would become airborne and everyone would get microscopic cuts in their respiratory systems. We recommend adding it to the exterior of the vehicle and where denied. MRAPs were delivered a month later.
I am SHOCKED how far away the Explosive was, i allways thought that EFPs need to be very close. but thats like a meter of distance, and its still blasting a hole through steel like its not even there.... holy crap!

Yes, another fact that may amuse you is that when the insurgents in Iraq started using EFPs, they also took to putting them above the target in trees, since people would mostly be scanning the street for something big enough to fit an amount of explosive large enough to do in an armored vehicle. But with the EFPs being smaller, and being able to go thru thicker top and side armor, they'd tie them up in the trees. Never underestimate the ingenuity of an insurgency!

I believe in ww2 they used copper as the metal projectile, it would punch holes in battleships, tanks etc depending on the size
I believe I saw one of these used in Palestine against an IOC tank recently, it had been hit twice with rp. G's and several resistance fighters. Where areguing about who got to pull the pin. Guy had to run up to the tank, it was like a 5 sec fuse. There was another tank like 50m back unknown status but u can hear the turbine running on the tank when the guy runs up to it. Would love to see different cone shapes and depths
I wanna see them in action against tallys back in the stans.
The principle behind that explosive was used extensively by insurgents in Iraq, they would a pack a cow bell with explosives, the energy would warp the metal into a super heated blob and rip through trucks passing by upon detonation

That’s scary, I’ve seen ar500 stand up to monstrous hits in robot combat, kids, this is why you don’t play with explosives, and if you do, take the proper precautions beforehand
That's amazing that it can achieve the necessary velocity without a barrel to build pressure. I wonder if there is a camera fast enough to capture the process so we could see the penetrator being formed. There probably is but it probably wouldn't survive the explosion.

That's because firearm gunpowder has a low brisance meant to propel, not shatter. That's why (modern) gunpowder is called a propellent rather than an explosive. If you burn some in the open like on your driveway it will just burn. Don't do it yourself as a disclaimer. Explosives on the other hand are of high brisance and are designed to shatter things even without confinement.
Is that dark Aluminium powder
It would be interesting to see the effects on the plate if the EFP was fixed onto the plate with a magnet, or something similar. Think sticky bombs, from Bands of Brothers.
That worked pretty good.
you guys should get big pieces of plexiglass to put under and around your detonation site so you can see better and it doesn't kick up so much dirt
Nothing survives an EFP, and if you do, that was your last lucky day.
Good old Munroe effect.....
Nasty Piece of work But one heck of a punch to it!

Would love if you gave US measurements as well as MM
The first 3d model of a shape charge explosion was modeled by placing a charge on top of water, to capture that shape, then the next charge was placed 1 cm above the water, and so on, 2, 3, 4 cm. Eventually it creates a picture of how the metal is moving.
