    To everyone asking what it feels like, imagine belly flopping into a pool, but the water turns to air right when you hit it, or someone slams a door in your face but it turns to wind as it hits you. It slaps your clothes against your body with enough force it kind of stings. Overall it’s not that bad, it’s actually fun! I explained all this in the video… but the first shot knocked my mic off and I was stepping on it when I talked about it haha.

    Had an idea for a while. Using multiple of these or even larger vortex cannons installed above the structures around it in cities and areas that are prone to tornado activity. Would be interesting to test the theory if multiple cannons could break up a funnel cloud or even an active tornado.

  • @VoltisArt

    @VoltisArt

    17 күн бұрын

    Weather formations are very large. According to the U.S. NIH, a typical tornado clocks in with a total kinetic energy (TKE) of 62.1 GJ, or the power to move more than 62 _billion_ kilograms by one meter, or smaller amounts much farther, if that power was directed into one vector. One giant VRAD cannon did not knock over a skinny KZreadr weighing perhaps 65kg. When you're talking "multiple" cannons....imagine typical Nerf dart guns versus an angry hippo or elephant. There is a point at which it would absolutely overwhelm the target. That point is _absurdly_ high. 65 is pretty close to 62, so let's just estimate a little further and divide that first number. One billion cannons _might_ knock tornado Kevin out of the sky, if he's an average or smaller tornado. It probably would not do anything to the weather in the area that spawned the tornado and may spawn more. You also have to factor in recoil at the base, which wasn't featured in either video but is equal and opposite to the force of the blast, short though it was. The truck trailer moved by some measurable amount. Horizontal rocket engines atop tall buildings might not be good for keeping those buildings intact before the tornado hits (or misses) them.

    Next time you get to play with the vortex cannon you should see what the effects are on remote control planes or drones since the idea was tossed around, during WWII, of using a vortex cannon to disrupt allied bombers over Europe. Cool to see if it was even possible or not.

    I DO have a functional Mattel "Agent Zero-M" Sonic Blaster. As well as a couple of broken ones. It's not the *same* one I played with as a kid, but about ten years ago I got one working, anyway. I'm about the same age as the well known actor who did those Mattel commercials in (I think) 1963. It's almost the same principle, but it uses a hand-pumped air pressure chamber to start. So I was hit with a vortex cannon many times (by my older brother) before the end of 1964. I'd guess that's about when your parents were born. Our parents took it away when the potential for hearing damage was understood.

    It should be feasible to design a configuration that creates two concentric toroidal vortices. By aligning a smaller ring within the larger one in just the right way, it might be possible to form a vortex within a vortex. Additionally, I’m curious about the extent of experimentation done with a smaller exit diameter to focus the force into a more confined area.

    Our airport uses "propane sound cannons" and they operate on a similar principle, but instead of generating a vortex they generate sound. Very good at keeping birds and small animals out of harms way relatively harmlessly (as in they save far more wildlife lives than they put at risk). Neat so se that a cannon operating in a more "dangerous" capacity has little effect on the human body same as the sound cannons on wildlife.

    At 1:58 you can see the reflection of the vortex refracting the view of the ground to the right of the boxes. Glad to see you take direct hits to show people that it doesn’t hurt the birds it’s meant to scare. That is one of the coolest gizmos I’ve ever seen. I assume you’re going to have to build one to see how small you can make one and still get a decent effect?

    If you're close enough. That's what the ear protection (sometimes just hands over ears) is for. You can induce ringing in ears (temporary damage) just by clapping your hands by them.

    0:22 this looks like the hail cannons that were used at the Nissan facility in Mississippi to prevent hail damage on the vehicles stored on their property in the early 2000’s. When the weather got bad they fired the two of them up and it was a sight to be heard and felt.
