Description:
Users love filtering and sorting options in Tableau dashboards, right?
Odds are, you know you can use a parameter to change the top number of values displaying in a worksheet. However, did you know you can also use a parameter to change whether it's the Top 10 or Bottom 10 values displaying? Did you know that same parameter can control whether the sort order is ascending or descending? It's true!
Check out this video to learn how you can build a totally customizable top/bottom filter for your Tableau users!

Thank you for the tutorial - it is very helpful! Would you be able to provide some guidance on how to show the lowest value (Wyoming) at the top when viewing the Bottom N values?

Sure! I'd recommend hooking the asc/desc parameter up to a Rank calculation which is hidden and controls the sort of the view. Here's some background on how to create that calculation: onenumber.biz/blog-1/2020/4/8/giving-your-user-multiple-sorting-options-with-tableau-parameters

This video helped me so much! I’m so grateful for your channel. I just discovered it yesterday and I’m already learning so much. Quick question if you don’t mind: I’ve got my top and bottom rankings, but with some filter options there are between ten and twelve items shown, instead of just ten. I was wondering if it was because of tied tenth values but that’s not always the case. How do I get Tableau to consistently show ten items on the nose? Should I just create a filter as you do in this video, set it to ten, and hide it? I’m ranking by a swappable field so I can’t just filter by top ten there.

Hey Johnathan, thank you for the kind words! You are correct. You are likely getting more than 10 because of ties. At around 5:00 in this video, if you use the function RANK_UNIQUE() instead of RANK in your calculation, that should resolve your problem!

@@onenumbertableau I spent about an hour on this yesterday, and this solution worked in about ten seconds. That’s the same thing that happened with this top/bottom video-I’d spent hours trying to figure it out and after your video I was able to get the results I wanted as easily as following instructions on how to make a PB&J. You two are the best! When this RANKED_UNIQUE solution worked immediately, I almost welled up, I was that relieved and happy. You’ve got a fan for life! Thank you so much :)

This will work only if the values are negative for Bottom ? because when the values are positive and we do it bottom then it will sort based on the higher-lower

Hi! It will work whether the lowest values are positive or negative. The most important factor is to determine is it's going to sort Descending (high to low) or Ascending (low to high). Ascending will always start with the lowest numbers whether they are negative or not.

The video was very helpful but I had a similar problem..... The Top sorts perfectly but the bottom shows all the customers with zero sales.. the rank is not filtering according to the specified number for bottom ... Could U get any assistance..
