Totally Average Skater - Dragon Wheel Review
Ойын-сауық
What does a totally average skateboarder think of Powell Peralta's new Dragon Formula wheel?
(I love them....well, maybe except for the few chunks taken out for missing totally average tricks!)

Roger!! Such a huge fan and so stoked that you actually found this video 🤯 Been trying to catch you guys on live stream for so long but the time difference makes it hard. Think I'll just have to take a day off and watch live to join in on the fun. And yes, these are seriously the best wheels. Still hoping for those Bones experimental 95A's! I am still a beginner, these wheels brought me into street skating. before it was too jaring to skate the rough streets around here with hard wheels. but dragons I can ride around and then I find a nice spot and I just skate it! with these wheels, in only 2 weeks I learned to powerslide and to ollie up and off a curb, I am ecstatic! of course I already had ok'ish ollies before, but thats a whole new level for me. they are actually gamechangers for me! love em!

@@Unlockingparadoxes I've been pretty aggressive with these wheels and they haven't flat spotted yet but I have to admit the chipping isn't very aesthetically pleasing. I'm just glad they don't impact the ride! I'm hoping that Bones releases those 95A's and that little bit of extra hardness will get rid of the chunking.

Perfect review for me! I'm turning 38 next year and i took a couple of years off from skating because I just couldn't do it anymore. Parks in these parts are mostly "crusty" asphalt parks, while the obstacles are made of smooth concrete, like you've mentioned. So you need to push double time and just rolling around the park drains your energy. My expectations for these wheels are pretty high.
@JonHomYT
Жыл бұрын
Yep! The greatest thing is you can spend more energy on doing actual tricks rather than getting to your tricks.
Great video
Thanks for the video - Which exact wheels are these? Did you say Dragons Wheels 95a version 5? I don't see these listed on the Bones website anymore. I'm also trying to find something that will help dampen the impact (same reasons you mentioned - knees, back), but allows me to slide (sounds counter-intuitive). I saw your other video on the new X-Formula. I currently use SpitFire Formula-4 52mm 99 du for street, but I also carry a set of Ricta 54mm Clouds 78 du for getting around. I'd like to try the Dragons, but wondering if that's no longer an option and if I need to go with the X-Formula. If so (if the Dragons aren't available), which wheels do you recommend? - Thanks in advance for your help and for this video. I sub'd. Hopefully you continue to make/share content.

The wheels in this review were the Powell 52mm Dragon 93a V1's! I guess it really depends on what kind of skating you like to do. If you're doing a lot of ledge tricks that, I'd definitely go for the Bones X-Formula 97's. Reason is because they don't squeal as much when sliding across certain types of coping. They're also soft enough to lower the impact. Dragons are good if you're skating relatively crusty street spots. If you're mostly doing park skating where the ground is smooth, the Dragons might feel a little too soft. Overall I think the X Formula's are the best all around wheel. I've been skating the 97a X Formula V5's for about half a year now and I don't really have any complaints. Bones did just come out with a 99a X Formula so I am curious how it compares to a 99a Formula Four or the STF formula.
youre humble stay that way, you are really good skating man dont cut yourself short!
@JonHomYT
Жыл бұрын
Thanks man!
A lot of wheels that are softer can get chunks removed when skating. It's sometimes not necessarily a matter of missing a ledge trick, it can be rough roads causing this too. I also suspect the wheel doesn't have a uniform durometer everywhere. It might be softer in some areas, harder in others. It would explain how it can still slide, but overall feel comfortable like a softer wheel would.
@JonHomYT

I never thought about it that way! It totally makes sense. Regardless, these wheels are still game changers. I wonder if the experimental 95A's will solve the chipping issue 🤔

Thanks! All these positive comments has me wanting to make more of these videos so let me know if you have any requests!
I just tested mine. I have two pair, the classic shape dragons and I have the conical shape dragons. First I will describe the classic shape dragons 54mm. What I previously have been riding are the spitfire 97A classic shape 54mm for my comparison. I skated three different surfaces from smooth to rough, then actually crusty. I did power slides, reverts, and very fast pushing to see how they hold my speed for street skating. On a scale from 1 to 10, the spitfire 97A felt about a 1-2 point difference from the Dragons in 4 different ways. It felt a 2 point out of 10 difference in speed. the Spitfire 97A classic shape was faster than the classic shape dragon on all surfaces. It felt one point difference in vibrations, the dragons translating less vibrations, but just by one point on the roughest surfaces. The slide ability of the dragons in classic shape was about 2 points less slick than the spitfire 97A classic shape on all surfaces. And lastly the sound was about 1 point louder for the spitfires vs the quieter dragons. Now I will describe the conical shaped dragons in 56mm. The 56mm dragons were about 2 points different in speed from the spitfire classics 97A, the spitfires being faster = less need for pushing. Slide Ability felt 1 point less slippery compared to the spitfires. Vibrations were about 2 points softer on the dragons vs the spitfires. And lastly, the sound was even less at 2 points quieter for the dragons vs the louder spitfires while riding, HOWEVER they were louder when sliding about 3 points vs the spitfires. Over all, this was on a scale from 1 - 10 and so these differences were small. The best thing I could do from here is to get the spitfire 97A in conical shape to see who the true all terrain winner is. Since the spitfire 97A classic did so well against both the dragons (only a 1-2 point difference in softness feel), I am going to assume the spitfire 97A conical will make up for the vibrations difference and retain the speed.

Great review!! I've personally tried the 97A conicals as well and loved them but the shape and size (54mm) were a little too big for me. Since I don't really ride rough terrain as much anymore, I definitely prefer a slimmer and smaller wheel since it makes flipping easier for me. I did like the feel of the 97A's for sure though, but now that I'm used to the Dragons, they do feel a little harder than what I'd like. I'm waiting for Bones to make those 95A's 🙏 I think that might be the perfect mix for me!

i always feel like spitfires are too slippery and i slip out of things like 180s on steep hips or rough ground. with the dragons they grip enough that i don't have that problem anymore. if anything they feel faster to me than my spitfires did. could just be im getting better and more comfrotable skating fast or they give me the comfort to go faster not worrying about slipping all over the place.

@@JonHomYT Sweet! Why do you ride Thunders compared to other brands?
@JonHomYT
Жыл бұрын
@@xxraptorsc0pezxx lots of reasons! maybe I'll make a video about it but in short, when compared to indy's, the thunder's don't turn as sharp, which means my board is more stable when setting up for tricks. I rode indy's for like 20 years and didn't realize it was an issue until I rode Thunder's for the first time. My ankles aren't as strong as they used to be, so having the extra stability really helps when doing more tech tricks. I still have indy's on my cruiser board though because there's nothing like the carve on them.
I saw a guy online slipping like he was hitting banana peels with these wheels ,that's the only thing holding me back as an old geezer getting back into skating a bit.

I guess it really depends on the surface and the how heavy footed you are! I'm what you call a "bailer" so I tend to stay more light footed when landing so it's easier to bail if need me (to avoid the slam). I have a lot of friends who basically commit every time though and they've never complained that the dragons were more slippery than other wheels. I think it mostly depends on the surface though.

Yesterday was my first day with the wheels and... My god I might never be riding any other skateboard wheels ever again lol and I had been in love with formula 4s for a while before then. They don't slide more than my 99a tablets, but definitely slide enough for skating. I like the extra grip though, especially when I goof around and pump flat ground lol And yes, they do take a lot of the impact away from my 34YO joints, it seems. Part of that would also be because I'm only pushing maybe... 3 times less while actually going faster? Lol huge plus. Also, I don't like catching all the attention from people around the city when I roll by... These are perfect for that, even though there is still a low humidity when rolling fast.
