Total War: Warhammer - Magic Guide: Lore of Shadow

Ойындар

This episode of my Total War: Warhammer - Magic Guide takes a look at the Lore of Shadow! We consider the effects of each spell, and consider the viability and use of each on the battlefield. Available to the Wood Elves, the Empire, and the Vampire Counts, this lore is new as of the Realm of the Wood Elves DLC release, and this episode is subject to updates in the near future.
Spells include: Melkoth's Mystifying Miasma, Enfeebling Foe, Withering, Penumbral Pendulum, Pit of Shades, and Okkam's Mindrazor

Again, great thought here! Will keep this in mind for future magic videos, and am adding these to the description!

Pit of shades wrecks beastmen armies, especially when you can funnel them into a narrow channel on the map. At first there's all these angry bestigors and then, it's like a black hole just landed in a cattle market. Moo!

Haha - Pit of Shades is quite glorious, and I might be changing my mind on the Pendulum after seeing it in action. Though against other humans, it's a little different compared to using it against the AI.

I just started watching these videos for some insight into magic (I wanted to play a magic heavy game and not rely so heavily on my melee lords). These videos are great, very informative, well described and overall helpful. Thanks so much :). Just a side question while I'm here: Which would you say is your favorite lore of magic to use?

Lore of Shadows was amazing in tabletop, especially for elves. Good to see it's retained that in the transition to total war. I want to do a wood elves campaign, it's seriously going to be a tough choice between shadows and life.

It really is a powerful lore - that vortex spell is probably one of my favourites (to murder with, and also to watch). I feel like Shadow is going to be the way to go more often than Life.

PartyElite turns out taking a branchwraith instead of a spellsinger gives spells from both. I ended up finishing the long campaign with one army using a shadow lore spellsinger (Orion) and the other using a branchwraith (Durthu) and both worked well. I probably used the shadow spells more often than the life ones since the wood elf units are small and so reinforce quickly, they don't suffer attrition and they can set up a settlement anywhere, so replacing casualties between battles isn't a a problem at all. Therefore there's no reason to minimise losses during battles with lore of life spells.

Correction: When talking about Okkam's Mindrazor, you say that fighting against a high-armor opponent this is a must-have spell, but there is no special synergy vs high armor opponents. Okkams Mindrazor increases armor-piercing and non-armor-piercing damage separately and distinctively. If you throw a non-armor piercing unit that has like 20 non-ap-damage and only 2 ap-damage against an armored enemy, the damage will rise (lets take 50% for nice numbers) to 30 non-ap-damage and 3 ap-damage. If your Unit hads no ap-damage to begin with, it will not get ap to begin with, only it's non-ap damage will increase, but that non-ap damage is getting fully reduced by the enemies high armor. I.e. you must still match your damage types to the enemy armor, no matter if you use the spell or no. Granted, no matter how well you match, this is still an almost flat 50% damage increase, which is huge (and especially useful with hard hitting soft troops. Wardancers and wildriders spring to mind, forget about treekin), so still pretty useful in any situation. Just ... no special advantage vs armor by the spell itself.

Are there lots of other spells with effects that are not detailed in their tooltips? (i.e. Melkoth only shows the overcast version increases cast range)

As a vampire player, I frequently regret not taking the Lore of Shadows Vampiress almost ever in multiplayer battles. Sometimes versus dwarves or chaos I'd take her due to their heavy armor but 99% of the time I feel like the mana spent on shadow spells in not worth the mana that could be spent on Lore of Death's herosniping/unitsniping abilities or of course Lore of Vampires's healing & raise dead. Am I possibly overlooking something?

Pit of Shades is looking fkn OP - I wish these idiots at CA had a clue about testing... Did a test with it vs Krimson Killerz - Flew a flying lord in so they bunched up, overcast and it left them with 945~ health - Did another test vs beastmen army (which pretty much naturally blobs) Not overcast left 3 units of Gors at 1/4 health, overcast is virtually wiped them out... *sigh* just when I was thinking of coming back to Multiplayer.

That's exactly what the pit has always been for on tabletop - it's a high cost nuke. The counter is to not blob up, and since it stays in place, move your units out of the way once it's cast. A human player will do that, even if the AI won't. It also means your wizard will become a no 1 priority target. This is how vortex spells are supposed to work, it's just that this is the first time it's been implemented properly.
