Total War Pharaoh is getting a massive game-sized overhaul in the coming months, set to redefine the game and frankly, make it into the experience many wanted from it on launch. A true Bronze Age Total War game is what we're looking at here, with the revealed campaign mini map and specifications promising a game virtually twice as large as the one we have right now.
This is undoubtably great news for Total War Pharaoh and its fans, and hopefully, this is something that will entice more players to play, presuming the game will be much more fun to play of course. Considering also the fact that CA has stepped up its communication, and its recent highly positively rated Total War Warhammer 3 DLC, is CA set to turn the ship around and bring about some positive change? It's certainly been a while since we could be positive, but I definitely think some of these changes are welcome, and all I can say is, I want more.
Let me know your thoughts on the coming Pharaoh update and the current and developing state of CA in the comments :)

Software Engineer here. With regards to the engine, when developing software, it's possible to have a functionality work a certain way, in this case the map expanding east, and without properly anticipating future requirements, base everything around that functionality's behavior. So if you want to expand the map to the west, you have to change not just the map functionality, but also the functionality of everything depending on the map behaving that way. A good non-software example would be if a country that drives on the right side of the road suddenly decided to switch to driving on the left. Everyone would eventually have to buy a left sided car, every signed would have to be moved, the traffic lights would have to be updated, the roads would have to be repainted and on and on. So what would seem like a simple change, would actually have some pretty complicated knock on effects.

@@AndysTake Happy to help. If I had to make educated guess, expanding the map Westward would probably mean whatever hex coordinates a location had would need to get updated, since the new hexes would have the lower numbered coordinates. So if you had a city at column 5, row 3 and expanded the map to the west by 4 columns, that city would now be at column 9, row 3. If you expanded the columns to the East, that city would still be at column 5, row 3. And you'd have to do this for every location on the map. This is all just an educated guess, based on my personal experience though, so take it with a grain of salt.🤪

@@sdhubbard That's why they expanded map in ME and IE eastwards only 🤣. Tbh looking at the map of Anatolia cut in the north and west, I think it was planned before release. If this game would have launched with this amount of content and had been titled "Total War : Age of Bronze," they could have sold it at full price and still made decent money. Better yet, if they had made Medieval 3, Empire 2, or anything else, they also could have sold copies like hotcakes.

Hear me out. What if we are all overlooking something. Back when Total War came out it was all based on historic settings. It was a history game and back then I believe that most people had a better understanding and interest in history. Now, people coming out of High School in the US don’t know the difference between WW1 and WW2. I wholeheartedly believe it’s a cultural shift of people being less educated and/or having less overall interest in historical settings themselves. I imagine that most of the people directing or working on the games in the beginning were all history buffs and have since then retired or moved on to other jobs, which are then replaced by younger people, that statistically I would guess have less understanding or interest in History. Or maybe the original workers just got bored of repeatedly making a new skin and setting for a new game constantly that they don’t have the drive anymore, since companies that eventually get big try to continually increase profits and stock prices to show growth, but I don’t think that any company can just infinitely grow without imploding on itself for straying too far from what the original purpose of starting the company was in the beginning. The quote “All good things must come to an end” comes to mind

Just because a bucket of water was dumped into the dumpster fire that is CA doesnt mean the job is done and the fire will go out 🤦♂️

I don't want CA to add more breadth and create a shallow ocean, I want them to fix issues that have been non-starters for years including horrible collision, janky individual sprite actions, not having everything feel like a Warhammer/mobile game, and better AI. I couldn't care less about having a bazillion provinces and a million factions if none of that changes.
They should have had Mesopotamia from the beginning.. What Bronze Age total war game doesn't include the Assyrians and Babylonians? Basically the OGs of the Bronze Age. It's as if Rome Total War didn't include Italy.
Thanks for staying both realistic but also positive and optimistic, Andy!
I'll probably pick it up on sale sometime after the map update comes out. I'm a big fan of the time period and this is probably as close to a full Bronze Age Total War that we're going to get. Still not gonna spend the full $40 given the fact that I don't see them giving this full support long term and the modding scene will probably never get very big with the tiny player base, but if this gets down to the $15-$20 range in the next 6 months to a year during a big steam sale then I'd think about grabbing it for sure.
They are still working with a broken combat engine. That has always been my deal breaker and why I won't buy another total war game until it's fixed. I'll stick with Rome 2 and Atilla for now, they're the last ones I bought.

Exactly. I can't take the blob-y, arcade, light and unimpactful combat. Everything feels so plastic, so weak. I got Warhammer titles and just can't, the hp bars and single-entity units absolutely ruined it for me. I prefer the Rome 1 - Attila period and engines far better.
i really liked total war troy
Only Redemption possible for them is to give us what we want. And that is Med 3 and Empire 2 + US Civil war as a DLC to Empire 2. There is nothing that can convince me that a Empire 2 game that: 1) Gives us bigger unit sizes and optional increase of between 20 - 50 stack armies. 2) Highly detailed, much bigger and beautiful global campaign map. 3) New innovative features like revolving gun turrets on ships, hot air balloons for spotting, torpedos, early subs and machine guns. 4) Government governing system with more features and bigger tech trees. 5) More building options for cities and provinces + railroads. Plus maybe even the introduction of the car. 6) Possibility of having multiplayer battles and campaigns with more than two people. 7) More advanced peace conferences. 8) Events and crisises that the player have to solve and will effect the nation. Would not be a profitable course for CA to take. Im sry but i refuse to accept any argument against this. The fact that they chose to make stars wars instead of this or Medieval 3, it just shows how out of touch they are. People like my are willing to shove our cash into their faces, but not for a product we are not asking for. You guys can play Pharo and Star Wars when it comes out, but i will be waiting until they wake up from their BS. I have waited since fall of the Samurai and i still got some patience left in me. + Napoleon total war remastered aint a bad shout too.
I look foward for this expansion, i even bought the game to sjow my support and Im actually loving it! To bad this wasnt released in the beginning.
They should have done that in the first place, releasing the game this year and avoiding the bad reviews and bad sales altogether. The image damage and loss of customer confidence is something they wont be able to heal for a long time. What to learn from all this? Never ever preorder a game or buy at release, but wait until at least 6 months after release.
would be cool when they make a kind of "immortal Empire" from WH3 but with Pharaoh and Troy
I don't trust CA to do the late bronze age collapse justice. I also don't trust the average TW fan to have any understanding of this time either.
I played it: good game. Reminds me of the original games from 20 years ago.
There has definitely been a “wake up call” at CA following the initial releases of SoC and TW Pharaoh. The greedy business practices that they used there were disgusting. Fortunately, the people finally voted with their wallets, putting much needed pressure on CA. With all of the price drop and free content being added to TW Pharaoh, plus the absolute success of ToD, I agree that this could be the start of a redemption arc. It’s at least evidence of a course correction. I love TW, so I hold onto hope… Time will tell.
The map looks like it's big enough & fitting for other historical setting like Alexander the Great's campaign or "Wars of Diadochi"
It always felt weird to do a bronze age game with only 2 of the major bronze age civilizations around the fertile crescent. I'd have preferred a less granular map with all the relevant factions from the very start. I'll probably buy the game if and when the update goes out and it lives up to the promise.
I skipped the purchase last year because of the state at the time. Should I buy it now or let it wait?

It is probably a niche hope, but I would love for this map to be retooled for an Heirs of Alexander game/saga. I think it would work really well with faction variance, and its a really interesting era that is pretty neglected. I think some mechanics from TW3K like the imperial regency could be implemented as well. And it would work well with CA's recent focus on character factions
I dig this move by CA. I want them to go the extra mile and add a full mythos as well. Will buy Pharaoh once this is ready.
All of us know what the new map look like, it's time to form Rome.
A much needed update that needs to be tested when its out though. Its fantastic yes. But we need more solid information. More screenshots/more teasers. I am glad that they didn't abandon the game and left it a half finished Bronze age game.

Honestly, they can make the best map ever, I won't play historical titles with Warhammer-like battles, with lack of collision and insisting on single entity units and character-heavy designs. I am totally satisfied with Darthmod Empire/Napoleon, DEI Rome 2 and FotE Attila.
