TOTAL CHAOS Long Travel Install on our Toyota Pickup!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Suspension is one of the most important components of any overland vehicle build. The time, effort, and dollars spent on shocks and springs are realized each and every time you drive. You’ll be reminded of your good (or bad) suspension design on every corner, pothole, washboard road, or Mexican tope.
Originally, we chose the tried-and-true Old Man Emu suspension system for the first build version of our 1990 Toyota Pickup. The OME kit is a great value, completely bolt-on, and able to support a fully loaded payload without complaint. After 70,000 kilometres of overland travel from Canada to Argentina and back along with another 30,000 kilometres at home, we had zero suspension issues and spent absolutely no time on maintenance. This time we're trying something totally different!

    I could not agree more about the suspension. I first got a very mid to low-level suspension set up for our 4runner. I soon realized the benefit of spending a little extra cash on all four corners equals comfort, maintenance, speed, and overall more fun and knowledge. Hope you guys get to start your travels soon and I hope the little videos keep coming!

    That footage of the suspension cycling through is really cool. Whats also interesting is how much the body mounts compress for that extra inch of suspension travel. Cool truck

    That was a good idea to take that thicker leaf out of the leaf pack. A big mistake I made once was to use a Rancho add-a-leaf and after 5 years it had put a bad pressure point of the stock 88 sr5 yota leaf pack and broke the oem rear leaf pack.

Any suggestions. As you know there’s not really any instructions to speak of but everything looks like what I’ve seen. Any thoughts?

    Are you saying that it’s stiff and the suspension isn’t compressing? I ended up putting in 500lb/in springs and that helped a lot. I revalved the shocks a couple times to reduce compression damping as well. That helped soften the ride. After a month in Baja and a second application of grease to the upper bushings I found that the suspension was less stiff as well.

  • @benagol7215

    @benagol7215

    Hey thanks for getting back to me. Yeah I spoke to Total Chaos about the stiffness, they said it needs breaking in and that those are the coils they recommend for my truck with that kit. They also recommended 150 psi in the shocks. I might play with lessening that too before I fork out more on different coils. Anyway, thanks again
