I bought one of these (the 2nd plant you show from the box) a year or so ago, I lost a lot of the leaves but it’s still living. Is there anything to do to get it to grow more leaves? Thanks - Sheila.

Hello! It still goes down to proper watering and good light source. I’m not a fan of fertilizers so I can’t suggest that. I only used fertilizer for my succulent wreath. I just stopped using fertilizers altogether. I think they’re not very safe. Huge apologies for the late response. 😅 I’ve been so busy. I need your help, my Graptoveria opalina,...I can’t figure her out. She is loosing leafs not due to rot. It not enough water. I don’t get it. The soil she has is what Altman’s uses for their succulents. I was too afraid to stress her out by changing soil and she wasn’t rotting so....thoughts on what I can do to save the last five big leafs?

Hi Erin! Is she underwatered? When it is time to water, do you make sure that the soil is really soaking wet all the way to the bottom? They die of overwatering and become unhealthy when underwatered. Did you apply or spray Neem Oil or any treatment in the summer, that could cause leaf drop? This is one possible cause of leaf drop; applying Neem Oil when temperatures are higher than 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

Succulent Fame I have a tendency to over water but I’ve been really good about taking care of my girls individually for a little while now. The leaf that turns doesn’t get soft but hardens up but turns yellow. It’s a double negative for the under over watering right?

Yes. And I also need to be clear on overwatering, ‘cause the term overwatering is more on “too frequent watering”. In fact, when it’s time to water them, they should be watered deep and the soil should be soaking wet. And then, the soil should be given ample time to dry all the way through; like dry around the roots. My most important tool is the moisture meter. My life depends on it. Do you see new leaves sprouting? My apologies for asking too many questions. I feel really bad when I hear succulents dying. 😅🤣😆 sometimes, I think, I feel more pain than the owners themselves. 😅

Succulent Fame I have a moisture meter and love it! I don’t soak my succulents because for me, it drowns my babies then I have to take them out of the soil to dry out just enough to not begin rotting. So my watering habits are to fill the pot up until I see water not absorbing fast enough and then when it’s all been absorbed I do it once more. It never is enough to over saturate or soggy but I feel it’s just before that point of wetness. Maybe I should try bottom watering and see how that goes. Maybe the roots are nearer the bottom and the collection of water isn’t reaching to roots for her to drink. Lol I call all my succulents she/her and my babies, I call most of my rougher looking succulents he/him and my little guys or both together grouped as my Wee-ones. Silly to some people but they are what brought life back for me to do for myself and something to feel good and accomplishing everyday...beyond my stay at home mom title. So I may not understand fully what you feel but I think we are close to having similar sense of love for our plants and find value in their life beyond the collective joy, happiness and peaceful time we spend with them looking after their wellbeing. The first time I found mealy bugs and lost my first plant to reasons I caused and couldn’t fix myself I felt defeated and I didn’t want to keep at it anymore and didn’t feel qualified enough to look after them anymore it sucked! So what was making me feel great just made me feel so sad but by this time I had too many to just give away or give up on. So after that I cleaned up every single pot with new soil, sterile pots in the same room for potential mealy bugs. Don’t get me wrong I’ve lost plenty more succulents before that but it’s wasn’t by my doing since I’d buy the wee ones at a big box that overwatered the poor things and/or couldn’t dig the rot out, but never bugs and I stupidly sat a bug infested suc with all my babies around instead of a quarantine like process. We live and learn but I get what you mean and feel to some extent.

I felt like you just described me in most part of this response. I like it that it’s long. 😃 I’m so glad to hear that you have a moisture meter. Does it read 10 or wettest on it when you water? I make sure that the soil is really wet or at 10 when I water. I also set the hose to its weakest drip possible and leave it in the pot for about 10 minutes or so. ‘Cause I’ve noticed that the top soil would look really wet, but underneath the top layer, about 1 to 2 inches under, it’s still dry that’s why now, I make sure that all the soil is really soaked. Your idea of bottom watering is actually good. I have just recently been doing it, too, ‘cause I feel like I’m wasting too much water with the drip method. I just don’t want to suggest it to everyone yet ‘cause I’m still testing it on all succulents. 😅 All the tips that I’m sharing in my videos are things that I’ve tried and worked. I’ll be sharing this “soaking through bottom watering” once I’m a hundred percent sure that it will not kill any of my babies. 😁 Like, today, it’s a rainy day out here in Brentwood, CA and I just did this “soaking in a big tub” method the other on a bigger batch ( it’s almost like extended watering😅). So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed now that they would pull through ‘cause I have guests (family) coming over for Thanksgiving that I couldn’t take them (the super soaked batch) in. They will have to stay out in my backyard. 😅 Until Friday morning. 🥴 Oooops, sorry...got carried away again. Succulents make me talk a lot. 😅 If it’s not over and underwatering that could have caused it and it’s not any recent mealy bug treatment, like Neem Oil or the mixed kind, too, I’m afraid I can’t figure out what’s causing it. 🤨 From the sound of it, you’ve had enough experience to know if there are bugs on it. Hmmmm...🤔 My next suggestion would be checking in forums, like Facebook groups. They might have encountered something like this. I still think they might be underwatered. In fact, from my experience talking with people, I would stop using the term “overwatering” as the number one killer of succulents. I would now simply use “too frequent watering”. I’ve spoken with individuals who ended up spraying their succulents because they are afraid to overwater. Deep, deep watering and really soaking, is the way to go WHEN IT’S TIME to water them. 👍👌 I really hope your Opalina will pull through. Do you see signs of sprouting at all in the middle? My apologies for the super long reply, too. 😅

if you could feature the succulence that grow out instead of growing up because I buy a succulent hoping it's going to be a big rosette looking but then it starts growing up instead of out and I know that it's getting full sun so I would love to see ( pictures of the succulents fully grown).
