Total beginner learns how to make a ceramic bong in 10 days

This video is part of an ongoing series called “Stephen is Bad at Art,” in which the titular Stephen Robinson takes on a variety of art challenges he’s set for himself - with the help of a bunch of experts, and sometimes his cat. Check out Stephen’s KZread channel, ‪@stephenrobinson52‬, where he makes videos on learning new skills, persistence and tackling boredom.

Let’s make something clear off the top: Stephen Robinson is not THAT bad at art. But he’s still an amateur - and in the most Malcolm Gladwell of ways, he’s looking to find out how much better you can get at a thing with enough time and dedication.
So here’s the framework: Stephen sets himself a task - in this case, creating a ceramic bong, which involves getting a good grip on how a pottery wheel works, as well as learning the properties of clay. He finds an expert - in this case, Kristian North of High Art Headshop (remember them?), a ceramics studio that specializes in hand-thrown bongs. And then, he gets to work.
In this video made by Stephen himself, you’ll see how it all plays out, from flattened clay and frustration to the results that we won't spoil. But we’re pretty convinced that 10 days can take you a long way.

Hi, I am trying to make one myself and I just don't understand how come the weed doesn't fall from the bowl into the water? Thanks, and looking forward for an answer.

My ceramics teacher would have actually yelled at you by the way you presented your skill I had ceramics for 3 years and can safely say I made a far share of bongs as "take home project's" and nearly failed as a result

Some tips for centering clay: 1. Make sure your wheel is dry, slap down some dry wedged clay in the shape of a ball (not too crazy of a shape.) (Badly wedged clay with air bubbles can make centering harder) 2. Spin the wheel and with one dry hand arm anchored, I like to put mine on the edge of the gaurd and keep my elbows in and tight for stability. Start slapping the clay as you spin it fast. This helps get the clay somewhat evenly distributed. Then get it very very wet and begin centering. 3. Centering isn't as much about strength as you might think. its more form and technique. I'm small and not particularly strong but i can center ten pounds of clay. The best advice I can give it to try to stiffen up and use less the strength of your arms and more the down pressure of your body to center the clay. And keep elbows in ! Sometimes even closing your eyes can be a helpful Exercise to help you really feel what your doing. Always keep it very wet too. (Ik this video is three years old but eh oh well here's my tips).

OMG I’m like 2 and a half minutes into the video and it is so painful watching you use the wheel with not enough water xD honestly though I can’t wait to finish the rest of the video and watching your excitement made me happy! I was having a bad morning.

It's so admirable how you did this in only ten days and not knowing the materials at all! I've been doing ceramics in college for a year now and even my ceramics professor has sayings how not everyday is going to be a good clay day. Some days are amazing and even she can whip out pieces on the wheel left and right while other days she can barely do one lol. Nice job !

Hi Stephen! Good job for self taught! I've been potting since 1966,and trust me,the key ingredients are Practice,Practice,Practice, Patience, Concentration and the ability to laugh at yourself and keep going. A few basic lessons can't hurt but the main thing is Practice!

same as how any bowl works, the hole on the bowl of this one does look bigger than normal but if you pack a proper bowl or just clog it a bit with a small nug then it should work just fine if you dont pull too hard.
