Tory 'incessant tribal rivalry' cost them the election | Tobias Ellwood

“Disunity does not win elections.”
"Tribal rivalry" and "disunity" will prevent the Conservatives from overcoming their election loss, says former conservative MP Tobias Ellwood.

Disunity was one problem. Others included arrogance, incompetence, corruption... the list is endless.

Nice to see Ellwood booted out. People like him are definitely part of the problem, not the solution. And no, we don't want you back Ellwood

Keen to return to that £90k per year, £6k per month plus expenses, salary. Plus staff. That ‘serve?’ What a grift

They got booted out because of the utter lack of competence, what's left doesn't have an ounce of talent between them

Ellwood is in denial if all he can suggest is that disunity was behind them getting their butts well and truly kicked. It was a very small part, the venality, mendacity and utter incompetence were the far greater part.

Tobias Twatwood. Enough said. And surrounded by a bookcase of books he has never read. And why name your kid Tobias? Individual attention from the tutors at his seedy Public School?

The Tories still really do not get it. Rivalry and disunity had little to do with their defeat; neither very much did their policies. Fundamentally, people were fed-up with them as people - their scandals, their arrogance, their condescending attitude and their lack of competence.

Long may the in-fighting continue. The Cons have always been about primacy of the Individual, with society's needs ignored. Ellwood to promote collective working rather than Individualism shows he doesnt understand the soul of his own party😊

the opening question was spot on. We really did vote for "the least bad." Everyone knew that Starmer was going to win the election, no matter who we voted for. My MP has been Labour all my life, im 34 and its still a red area. Not saying i support Labour, or the Torries, or even Reform. I support my MP though. A few years ago, just after lockdowns, my mothers disabled badge needed renewing. Council were being arseholes about it, so i wrote to my MP. Sent her all the information, how much we spent on postage, on the claims, on parking, how much time was spent. A week later, i received a hand written letter back from the MP saying she would speak with the council. A few days later, my mother received a renewed disabled badge AND a visit from the MP to see if she could help with further disability requirements around the house. Hand rails in front, back and stairs were fitted, as well as a access ramp, a dropped curb to get the car in close for her to get in, and a renovated wash room downstairs to make showering easier. You bet we voted for her again this year!

Until the Conservatives expel a number of the despicable senior Tories, they will only attract a certain type of supporter. Some of the present MPs should contemplate joing the Reform party. I'm sure they would be far more comfortable there. That would be a step in the right direction to encourage the return to the Conservatism the electorate would encourage.

The Tory party doesn't have all the answers. It might be important for the party to listen to the opinions of its members before deciding on the political direction to take in the future.

He's the only Tory I've heard since the Election who's talking sense... And seemingly the only one who recognises how hated they were, though he didn't mention the large numbers of us who voted tactically just to get rid of them...

I'm reminded of the adage: _"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people."_ The human drama and tribalism of politics is less important and interesting than the ideas.
