I love that a 20 year old tortoise was hanging around in India during the American revolution. He lived through the war of 1812, Mexican- American war, the Civil War, Spanish American war, the invention of the airplane, every conflict of the 20th century, he just turned 200 when man walked on the Moon, and was still around when the second Iraq war started. That kind of makes you change your perspective. Than tortoise was older than my country when he died in 2006! Rest in peace Sir

Technically nothing dies from old age, they simply get more fragile from age and die from something failing eventually. It's interesting to think that Tortoises never truly get fragile enough for things to suddenly kill them casually.

There is no such thing as dying of "old age" its always some kind of organ faliure, which was indirectly caused by the old age. Especially in turtles who have no real lifespan there is no real concept of bodily age. As an example Greenlandsharks who have no predators only die because humans killing them, or parasites (which are rare for greenlandsharks as their meat is toxic).

  • @TheDirtBlockFilms

We aren't destroying our planet, we are destroying ourselves! In fact, the planet is doing pretty damn good. At any time it could just reset itself, and restart the cycle of life all over again! (Or not...). But yeah, I see your point. Though I think it's too late for us to save ourselves on this planet. If anything, I think all of that attention should be moved to space travel and colonization. Though it would be... Really difficult.

they can not only live that long, but even survive without eating for years! When my grandfather passed away, we found a tortoise locked in his closet. My mom recalled that they had gotten that tortoise when SHE was in college. We kept it feeding as much as we could wondering how long he was trapped in that closet since the lock on the closet door had completely rusted shut! It lived well beyond after I went to college. Sadly it got some kind of cancerous tumour and died when I got my first job. But I'm sure if it wasn't for cancer, it would have lived to see my grandchildren! Although I missed a lot more when my pet dog died.

Actually, not quite. Bad rap is a generally accepted phrase, and far more common than "bad rep", even though it'd seemingly make more sense. From Dictionary.com: "Bad rap: noun phrase - An erroneous conviction or sentence; wrongful punishment; bum rap (Underworld) - Any unjustified condemnation : Microsoft gets a bad rap for a reason"" The phrase originated as a sort of mix-up. The original phrase seems to have been a bum rap. Its origins trace back to underworld slang of the Prohibition Era. A “rap sheet” is a criminal record, and a “bum rap” meant a false accusation (or even a false conviction). Eventually, the phrase’s definition became a bit more broad to cover perceived unfair accusations of any kind. At some point along the way, the alternative “bad rap” came into play.

No! no. no. Tortoises are not cute. puppies and kittens are cute. Baby chickens are cute. Tortoises might be cool, tortoises might be exotic, tortoises are a lot of things, but not cute. Im tired of people calling everything cute. Now I cant say a girl is cute, or Iits like saying she is like a tortoise.

  • @Robert-xp4ii

As much as we'd love to live 200 years, that would inevitably force every single one of us to experience cancer at LEAST once in our long lifetime but probably several times. And then there's the population problem worldwide. All in all, living 200+ years would be a very bad thing for our planet as well as individually. The idea sounds great if those problems could be addressed ethically, beginning with curing cancer, Alzheimer's, and all other similar problems.

The thing about the shell rings determining age is pretty inaccurate, as turtles can shed more or less of their rings, depending on various factors. But other than that, fascinating video. Negligible senescence sounds really cool. I'll have to look into it. I wonder if it's at all related to the life stage reversal that certain jellyfish experience

+King Hanzo The liger isn't really it's own species though? It's just a completely artificial hybrid that'd never happen in the wild and that shouldn't exist at all, seeing how they suffer from terrible health issues and serve no real purpose other than to be exploited for profit. The only good reason to make an episode about them is maybe to point out how absolutely terrible their existence is :P

I patted Adwaita's back! He was kept in the zoo in Calcutta and when I was a kid, the enclosure security was pretty lax in security- for herbivores people could get right up to the wire boundary and the animals would come to the edge for food.
