Torso Electronics S-4 Demo - Superbooth 2024
Музыка
The S-4 is a "sculpting sampler" … that is: it records samples to up to 4 tracks, it marks in and out points and then applies "granular synth" functions to it as well as effects like distortion, noise, compression, bit crush, reverb, delay and 4 LFOs per track. Finally came out a month ago, was awarded "best of show" by Sonicstate.

Nice video! I’m happy that now you are making your channel content from the things you like to do, I still remember watching your kot videos, I rembember seeing that vid when you said you would start making the content from the things you liked to do, and I’m happy to see that you did! Love your vids, and thanks for everything, btw I’m half way on high school, I still remember watching your vids when I was on elementary school😂

Thanks and yeah ... that was part lf the problem. Most of my subscribers grew up and while some insist I still do content for elementary school kids, most of them have other interests now. Like PS5 shooters or fun gadgets like synths. Glad you like the "new" content 😉

This is very much in the style of my sound design. It's kind of crazy the effort I put into making sounds like this and it does it all automatically.

I'm currently using a Baklengs granular pedal from Pladask Elektriks - that does a lot of weird stuff but isn't really transparent at what it does - and a Tasty Chips GR-1 that is very similar, shows clearly how it applies and scatters grains and produces an ambient pad out of some voice sample in an instant (but with terrible load/save windows-esque functionality). I'm about to sell my GR-1 to get the S-4 ... but there's a waiting list again and the next batch won't ship before September.
Sup g3cd! Idk if u remember me, I used to comment a lot on ur videos on KoT. I'm happy ur doing something that u enjoy more and have a lot of fun and great journey. Just came here to check up on how ur doin! :)

Thanks! I was just at this synth fair in Berlin which was more like a festival with live music on every corner and while had to catch up with some sleep, it was an awful lot of fun 😅

how compares the GR-Mega?

The Mega hasn't been at Superbooth this year. I saw the prototype last year and well ... it's gigantic, like 2x Pulsar 23 (which is already too big to fit on my desktop). From my own experience with the GR-1 I'd say: 4 tracks is more than enough and already does every ambient/drone magic ever, but in conparison, the S-4 is way more accessible and does a lot more than the GR-1. I can't wait to see the GR-1's firmware 3.0 that is said to resolve the terrible load/save functions that lost me a few projects after hours of work and has been 2 years in the making... but I actually sold my GR-1 two days ago to get a S-4 instead 🫤
Amazing! Can it sync midi yet? I am going to guess that 50% of the features aren’t implemented yet still?

It's all there if you look in the manual (from page 114 on) downloads.torsoelectronics.com/s-4/Manual/The_S-4_Manual_1v0v0g.pdf Not sure whether this has been implemented yet, the S-4 has only been shipped for a month and the Torso guy said something from "CC in the next firmware update", also I don't think I saw as many MIDI items on the screen in the demo as in the manual. But it's definitely all laid out in a good way already.

@@g3cd It has not. That’s literally my point. There’s a HUGE amount of features that haven’t been implemented. When I spent $900 on a device, I expected it to actually do what it says on the box, and it didn’t.

Well he said "MIDI CC in next update" and for the T-1, Torso has been cranking out sometimes several updates per week (bigger updates took like 3 months). So I'm sure it'll come soon. Right now, it can already do more than my GR-1.

I'll try to get one in the next few weeks and will let you know how it compares to the GR-1. And usually I do EVERYTHING via MIDI, either through a Faderfox or a sequencer, so proper MIDI implementation is pretty much a must for me.
does it do live sampling and live looping?
@g3cd
Ай бұрын
I asked the guy and it can be used as "a very expensive effect pedal". Usually in granular synths, you can switch between continuous recording and recording only once (with a max length) and then you can set the start and end of a loop with the potentiometers and some bars on the screen. So while you can "record continuously" and apply effects to the live sound, making a loop does require some fiddling and is nothing like the Boss RC loop stations with huge buttons Record/Play. And while the manual does list a MIDI CC command (that will be implemented with the next firmware update) for "Material Start" and "Material Sound on Sound", I didn't see any "Material Stop" or "Material Overdub" CC values. So not sure whether you could use it with an external (foot) MIDI controller to achieve that Boss RC feeling. It would make total sense though and seeing how active these guys are with their firmware updates (S-1 received sometimes multiple updates per week), I would consider this possible in the future.

Yeah, just VST in a fancy box.

Difference is: you turn physical knobs and hear the difference. You don't program something in and do like "set this to 22% as it LOOKS right in my DAW (but sounds terrible)". I'd always prefer a clever little hardware box with a smart user interface to anything that ties me to a PC even more (I already stare at computer screens all day).
