Toronto Zoo- Gorilla Personalities

It’s #WorldGorillaDay! What better way to celebrate than to hear from our Gorilla Keepers as they discuss the members of our troop 🦍
Western lowland gorillas are listed as Critically Endangered, losing approximately 3% of their population per year. Because of poaching and disease, gorilla numbers have declined by more than 60% over the last 20 to 25 years. Sadly, even if all of the threats to western lowland gorillas were removed, scientists calculate that the population would require 75 years to recover. #EndExtinction

Thank you for introducing the gorilla team. I live near the Toronto Zoo and until the new virus, I visit the zoo for exercise, walking. After my walk, I always make the gorillas my last stop. Such gentle creatures and humans could learn a lot from their behaviour. Thanks, Toronto Zoo staff for taking such great care of the animals.

Back in the late 80s/early 90s my friends and I were at the Gorilla Enclosure of the Toronto Zoo. The crowd on the side where I was was three rows deep because sitting right in front, quietly watching us, was a silverback. We were having a great time watching him when, without warning, he jumped up, fangs bared, slamming his hands against the thick, plexiglass window which stood between him and us. As you might guess, this caused a terrifying noise and shook the entire pane violently. Everyone in the front row jumped back. Everyone in the second row stepped back. All of us in the third row leaned back. We stood frozen, expecting the huge enclosure window to fall on top of us. However, when nothing happened, we began to laugh nervously and just he sat back down with a very smug look on his face.

My heart just melts. My mother had a saying when she looked into the eyes of a child and they looked back with such a calm stare. " They have an Old Soul." It would take you back a bit, it is almost like they seem to know you from some where before.

This was so awesome! I watch a lot of gorilla videos on youtube but unfortunately they almost never contain anything but the actual visual content without any background on the families. Mostly with a annoying soundtrack just put on it. I would much prefer to here the sounds they make, particularly the babies but alas as it's unfortunately very rare for the Zoos them selfs to post videos with gorillas and it's usually the zoo visitors with an interest and love for gorillas that do this. Which is very unfortunate as I guess there's a lot of us that don't have any zoo with gorillas to go to even when there's no pandemic going on. Also the zoos sure are in a better position to make videos with the gorillas they house. To just film them and then just post the videos without any time consuming editing. Just getting the privilege of enjoying what the keepers days are like would certainly be something I would really really love to see! Again awesome and thanks!

God forbid zoo’s rehabilitate these magnificent creatures. It doesn’t fit with their agenda. Keeping them dumb and living unnatural for profit is more important for the zoo than to rehabilitate them and have them living in their native land in a protected nature reserve . People will try and brainwash others by saying that “zoo’s are protecting them etc”. Zoos are very outdated and people should stop supporting them.

@@m.e.345 so you’re judging their “happiness” off a 10 minute video? Zoo’s are a facade, all results are manipulated. Gorillas have 16 square miles of territory in the wild and they travel about 1.5 miles a day. They never sleep in the same place at once Zoos give gorillas Xanax or something similar for anxiety, they(the zoo) choose when they(gorillas) can eat, where they can eat, who they can live with, who they can breed with. They’re not even allowed to climb on trees in zoos because all the trees are hotwired. They sleep on concrete/steel and have constant human contact. These creatures are highly intelligent and they might not know about the African jungle but I guarantee they know they’re prisoners. Sorry for the long comment. Respect and happy new year.
