In 2021, 1376 tornadoes were confirmed
Causing over a hundred fatalities, the most tornado related deaths we’ve seen in the US since 2011.
Though it turned out to be an above average year in touch downs,
A continuing deficit of photogenic tornadoes seemed to inflate the reverence for nebulous, weak and rain-wrapped funnels. For most of the storm chasers, the surplus of incredible storm structures, lightning and atmospheric colors made chasing in 2021 well worth all the challenges.
FREAK DECEMBER TORNADO OUTBREAKS of 2021
On the evening of December 10th and dark AM hours of the 11th a deadly tornado outbreak devastated portions of the Ohio and mid Mississippi river valleys. In horrifying darkness multiple strong to violent, long tracking tornadoes destroyed thousands of homes and businesses, some of which were completely leveled or swept from their foundations.
QUAD STATE TORNADO?
One long lived supercell produced two EF4 tornadoes where Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky borders are in close proximity. Several media outlets prematurely hyped these tornadoes as ONE “quad state tornado," inaccurately claiming the longest tornado ever recorded. The first EF4 from this storm tracked “81 miles (130.7 km) killing seven people. With top wind speeds estimated at 190 mph” (306 km/h) The second tracked 165 miles (266.7 km) killing over 50 people. By sunrise on December 11th, 88 people had lost their lives.
*Data preliminary and subject to change
DECEMBER 15th DERECHO
Four days later, a long-lived and fast moving, destructive wind storm
called a derecho spawned a swarm of tornadoes in the the Upper Midwest. The highest rated were only EF2s and no tornado related fatalities were reported. A freak December finished off 2021 with an additional 200 tornadoes. More than April and June combined.

Your story about thinking a horny toad was a dinosaur reminded me of an infamous moment in my family history. My family came to the southern USA from Russia, and one of the family's favorite stories to tell at every gathering was about the time my uncle was a little kid playing outside and came running inside to tell my grandma he had seen a dinosaur, my grandma went outside with him to see what he was talking about, and by God she saw the dinosaur too. She ran back home and put all of her children in her wagon and rode to the sheriff's office to report the dinosaur. The sheriff followed my grandma back to her farm and upon seeing the dinosaur he politely informed her that the dino was, in fact, an armadillo.

The whole presentation of you channel: Educational, and not just about storms, lightening, and such, but how to photograph lightening (for one example); little bits of the storm-chaser culture; your humor; and you compose and record all (or almost all?) of your own music... not to mention video editing and telling interesting stories. Most people can't even do ONE thing well! LOL And here you are with a whole suite of things done superbly. BRAVO! (Edit spelling)

Greetings from Czech Republic Hank! Let me do a honorable mention for tornado that passed through Moravia on the evening of 24th of June, which ended up being one of the most powerful tornadoes of 2021, ending the lives of 6 people and injuring more than 200. Mind you, this was the first significant tornado in Czechia since 2004 and first confirmed tornado since 2018, so that thing really came out of nowhere. Funny thing is, the evening before, I was preparing for an exam and saw in the news that a supercell is forming in Austria, and was thinking that maybe, just maybe, we could see a tornado. Hopefully we won't see anything like this in a long time, the videos from that day still gives me chills..

I've lived in Tornado Alley my whole life and always thought they were the most terrifying things ever, but I never realized just how beautiful they could be until a funnel cloud about a week ago in my county (I didn't actually see it. I just remember that a bunch of other people in my neighborhood did) peaked my interest and I started watching tornado videos. Now I realize just how much majesty there is to these insane forces of nature. They're still terrifying, of course (I almost lost my grandma in the December 10th EF4s. It barely missed her, but leveled three houses across the street from her. Her house was still damaged from the wind, though, and she still hasn't been able to repair her house completely), and I don't think I could ever have the guts to be a storm chaser and try to get that close to one, but I have a new respect for tornadoes. That first low precipitation supercell you showed was absolutely gorgeous. You definitely succeeded in getting some very photogenic tornadoes. And I had never heard of sprites before. What in the world are those? They're so beautiful! Also, I absolutely love your respect for animals. The way to handle them makes me see that you are truly a man who appreciates nature. In regards to both storms and animals.

He came in and said “Mommy, mommy, there’s something horrible looking in the backyard.” I said “What does it look like?”. He said “A dinosaur!”. I knew immediately. I walked out and even our dog was scared of it. Haha. I reached down and got it in my hand and they both freaked out. We enjoyed it for a little bit and probably let him run under the storage building for a bug feast. That may have been the last I’ve seen and it was nearly 40 years ago. I miss seeing them!!!! I saw them ALL the time as a child. 🥲

Aw! I love you picked up the Bull snake and brought him to safety. A big beautiful male like that deserves safety :) Such docile and pretty snakes. One thing you may find is if you offer a snake water when In a dry environment they may actually drink right in front of you, though at that time he was probably anticipating the weather, given how sensitive to barometric changes they are. So cool!

Hank should have his own show on tv where he talks about his adventures and stories either if it's recent or years back. You're a legend hank! Keep up the good work and I wish you luck for the 2022 tornado season

Yeah, the end of the year's storms were devastating, I was in between two tornados, the closest one leveling the downtown area of a nearby town, it doesn't really feel real until you slowly go by the destruction, hoping everyone made it out okay. It was especially sad because it was close to Christmas, and spirits were high, and some people had everything torn away from them. Then, the very start of the year had my county with two tornado warnings, the eerie silence coupled with the tornado sirens outside after the New Year had begun made it feel like a horror movie..

My birth mother says she still can't watch tornado footage without feeling and hearing the one that ripped over her house as s child. The wind and freight train sounds. They moved out of Ohio a few months later to a non tornado prone area

I lived in Jackson, Missouri for a few months during the spring and early summer, and it was always a treat during thunderstorms to stand on the balcony of the apartment and watch the lightning dance. You could see it go for miles. It was just incredible. I miss midwestern storms and I so enjoy these videos!

@@leannmeddings4068 No, the city of Jackson. Cape Girardeau County, down in the southeast corner. Just across I-55 from Cape. We didn't get a tornado while I was there, but one hit a few miles away in Marble Hill and we had a few close shaves.
