Well I know you may or may not be reluctant to puncture the integrity of your shelter however a thought just occurred to me after you pulled out the baofeng and didn't have a signal. What if you looked into a way to either slide some RG 316 with the appropriate SMA connector for your radio- through a joint in your shelter there or just go ahead and drill a small hole big enough to get the coax and the SMA connector through and then put a strong mag Mount or in some way attach it to the roof of your shelter there? If you can spare the room maybe even a small HF/UHF/vhf radio with a little bit more power, and an appropriately sized LifePo4 battery. You could put adapters on each radio and the coax to make it all work BNCs so you could easily switch back and forth if you wanted to.

​. that's always been a concern for me. if we survived but couldn't get out of the basement. possible fire or gas leak is a real possibility and a real danger. would certainly suck to survive a tornado strike just to die in a fire / gas explosion, etc.

Electronic ear protection. I’m guessing if a tornado was hitting your house it would be loud as F! The hearing protection will probably keep the kids calmer. I keep in all bug out bags as well. God forbid if I had to use pew pew in the car at least the family and myself would have hearing protection that you can actually hear with. Helps in the woods too amplify the sound around you. And I’m sure that’s something that you can get at MIDWAY USA!

Replace the MRE with Cold Weather MRE. You get a few more calories they are made to be eaten cold, and the shelf life is a lot longer.

I'd add a bucket for every family member. So they can sit on it and have something for the kids to play with in it.

These are the kind of videos I love, it's something simple and not about the end of the world. These are the videos I show to my non prepper friends to try and give them at least a little nudge to preparedness

Consider adding a couple blankets.

I would consider including a scale model of a mobile home as an “offering”. Tornadoes love trailer houses

Things that I would include are; 1 Lawn chairs - they fold up out of the way and it makes the wait easier. 2 Ditch the MREs and go for something more familiar like beef jerky, dried fruit, granola snacks. 3 Get some water flavor for the kids. 4 Connect the security cameras to an inside display - so you don't have to rely on your cell phones that won't connect during a big storm and you don't have to go check outside for immediate conditions. Security on an UPS system. 5 Get a ratchet wrench for the bolts. 6 Paint the inside of your shelter white so its not so dungeon like. 7 Get a small battery backup supply and install some battery overhead powered lights. 8 If you have the battery supply get a fan because it is amazing how stuffy it gets on a hot summer night. 9 Get a deck of cards and divvy up some pennies for some poker bets.

Think about an external antenna for your radio. Low profile. You will have to drill a hole, though.

My recommendation for an additive to the kit, tranquilizers.

Access to your house could be blocked by debris, so it wouldn't hurt to have more food and Survival Tabs. Some blankets to sit on would good too since I didn't see any. If you're in the rare scenario where you can't get out and can't get help, you could dig through the concrete with a pick axe or hammer, so some escape tools would be good.

1. pack of glow sticks, after the home is destroyed they can be used to light a large area. 2. shoes, if alarms go off at 10PM you jump out of bed get the kids run to shelter, house gets sharp stuff everywhere. 3. tent, if your home is gone it would be nice to sleep in a shelter. I know these wont fit in the buck, but I would have them in the shelter. good luck

Some towels and a set of dry clothes for everybody. You might have to make a run thru the rain to the shelter. Some sturdy boots. There could be a lot of debris in the yard when you cone out. Some things for pets if you have any.

Amazing when you take the time what a bucket can hold! Tetris!

Ohio here. We are leading in the number of tornadoes this year. Great video. Everyone at risk of tornadoes should have one bucket per family member like these in their basement or shelter. Adding a small foldable solar charger and battery pack is something I would add. The crank radios don't hold charge but I have had more luck with the small solar panels.

Ditto. Most crank radios are gimmicks that don't work long term. But a better, smaller radio, and pack extra rechargeable batteries, plus a small solar panel.

Don't forget the fur babies have the same needs 😉

2018 , wife n i did part of RT.66 from N.M to Chico.. Outside of Claremore Ok. , dark sky , HUGE black , pull into Hampton Inn and never saw rain n wind like it..Funnel cloud north of Tulsa.. Leaves , branches stuck to side of bldg.. Shingles tore off.. Had my ham radio ht and sure enough a Skywarn wx net i found ..Holy smokes , never more scared.. Don't know how folks can deal w/ it.. We in N.H. have blizzards , Nor' Easters w/ wind , blinding snow but to hear the sirens going off is way scary..

Add a basic first aid kit with a torniquet. Hearing protection would be a plus as it could get extremely loud if debris hit those metal walls.

Great idea! I have a couple of suggestions that might work for some folks. All your water bottles look the same. In situations where we've had numerous people all drinking water from similar bottles, we've ended with an enormous amount of half empty bottles because folks lose track of which one is theirs. Throw a sharpie in the bucket and put each person's initials on the bottle, not the cap since those get separated from the bottle. Don't forget TP and hand sanitizer, maybe a small spray bottle of air freshener. Prepositioning a folding room divider or tarp to hang from the ceiling would allow you to create some privacy for your "Honey pot" area. Perhaps rather than packing two MREs for 5 people, you could pick each person's favorite snack to pack. That probably wouldn't take up any more room than the MREs. You might want to pack a recent family group photo and copies of I.D. I've been warned that in some cases it can be helpful to be able to prove a child is yours. And it's handy if one of your group gets separated later, during clean up. Other then the roll of TP, these items don't add much bulk to your bucket contents. What kind of cell reception do you get inside that box? Is it worth adding some kind of antenna to the outside so that you can get a good signal? I'm thinking of something like they make to boost the cell signal from inside a car.

Thoughts: secure the escape wrench with a carabiner or light weight zip tie so it never walks off. Put a padded seat on that bucket. Might as well sit while you wait out the storm. Keep the magnetic light on the ceiling by the door, maybe even on the exterior. All my steel exterior doors have a magnetic light attached. Keep an old cell phone in the bucket. They will still call 911 if the signal can escape that steel can.

You're gonna need some really high quality over the ear earmuffs. That tornados gonna beat that door like a drum.

I was thinking the same thing. Worth putting some acoustic panels on the inside of the shelter walls too. The sound and concussion from flying debris hitting that thing would be insane.

Don't forget a good bottle jack to move an obstruction.

Charcoal can be added to a bucket toilet to help neutralize odors.

I would suggest changing out the bucket itself for a luggable Loo it’s a special bucket with a traditional toilet seat under the lid, special bags that are biodegradable just for it and some chemicals you can put in there that break down the waste and neutralize the smell. Just a suggestion.

Definitely a good idea to be able to have an alternative escape from the bunker as I wouldn't want to be trapped with the sun beating down on the unit.

Magic - add a few sets of basic foam earplugs, so you and the fam don’t go crazy if you have to use the emergency whistle for a little while.

I'd try to find a few comfort items, maybe a book or two for distractions, deck of cards, coloring book/crayons for kids. Something to do rather than just be staring at the walls waiting for the loud scary tornado to go by. Maybe even some ear pro in case things really start to go bang. And just in general an emergency or mylar blankets in case anyone is hurt and may be losing body heat if the temp drops during a storm.

All good suggestions. Ear pro is in the shelter as it's required for this particular unit. But I didn't know if that applied to a general use case.

It really can happen anywhere. We get our share of severe weather all of the way up here in ND as well.

I would consider adding a bottle of hand sanitizer and some sort of toilet paper or wipes.

I'd make it two buckets and more liners. You got five people. That's a lot of waste that can generate. Aside from that morale/entertainment items/comfort. As you said tornado, you may be stuck in there I'd plan on 3 days in, out, or around the shelter should the worst happen.

i would recommend adding ear protection. being in that tin box in a strong tornado will be very loud. its also recommended you keep important documents, copies are better than nothing, of your home, birth certificates etc. also, some kind of self defense tools as people may be a little goofy in the head after a traumatic event. And finally a good foldable saw like a silky to cut through lumber should the house come down but not blow away. the only guaranteed way to survive a tornado is to not be where it is. stay safe all

Maybe store bike or motorcycle helmets for head and face protection in your tornado shelter area as well.

Put a swivel cushion top on the bucket and there is a comfy seat

I would recommend either a box of matches or some air spray. if you gotta start crappin in a bucket in that small of a space....

Some sort of cushioning to sit or lay down on. ( maybe a two or three inch egg crate mattress topper). If you are in there for several hours the concrete is going to get unconfortable.

You should get one of those plastic toilet seats that you can just snap onto a 5-gallon bucket for added comfort. Also, add a roll of TP. MREs do not supply a reasonable amount! Also, take a magnetic mount mobile whip antenna and stick it on the center of the metal roof! It's a perfect ground plane! Then run the coax through the air hole and then make sure you add a pigtail adapter to connect that Baofeng to to up your range exponential!

Cat litter to add to the bags when used.

Small chainsaw with can premix gas and ear plugs for everyone, You could then cut your way out if door is blocked once you open it.

A good folding saw and pry bar wouldn't be a bad idea, if your house is hit you may need to clear debris to get out of the shelter. Even if you took a panel off to get out it could still be covered, at least both of those items are relatively small and wouldnt be to much to deal with.

You will need to add an external antenna for phone and radio. They will not work in a metal box.

Make a test call from inside the shelter to your local fire and police dept (non-emergency#) so they know for any future event. AND to make sure you are not in a Faraday Cage and can call out. If you can't receive radio signals that may be a problem

Not all if the following is for the bucket but I wanted to toss in my two cents worth: I'd have one bucket for each person with either a padded lid or a way to add padding for a person to use the bucket as a chair. Also, having more than one bucket means you can dedicate one bucket as a toilet and others as chairs. Maybe hang a curtain in the corner for privacy when needing to "void". How about a can of Febreeze to help freshen that stagnant air? I'd also have a couple more of those "puck" lights with magnetic bases and just leave them attached to a couple interior walls. When needed, just push the 'On' button. This last one is not for the bucket but for the shelter floor. Maybe bring in a few of those anti-fatigue mats. They "soften" hard floors real quick and can even provide a little comfort if one were to want or need to lay on the floor. Any chance you could add an antenna to an exterior shelter wall? One that you can connect on the inside to your HAM radio?

Can you possibly put up an external antenna outside the metal box with a wire going inside to pick up better reception on your radio. Like the kind you would put in your car.

Great ideas. I would add some TP or tissue, something to wipe the bum! I like the idea of using a bucket to hold all the stuff. We are putting together a couple of “go” buckets, in addition to our bags, in case of fire, or other reason to have to bug out quick.

I like the concept. I hope you have stuff already in your storm shelter. You could have a small solar generator like the Oupes Exodus 600 to power let's say lights or a fan to keep cool. We have "storm" buckets staged at different locations just in case. Keep doing the things brother.

4:00 I doubt your phone or your radio will work from inside that metal box if you’re trapped… I’d install some sort of a hatch to the outside to toss a road flare or smoke signal. If you’re thinking of using the bucket/bag as a toilet, add some cat litter to put in the bag, you do NOT want to deal with a bag full of liquid sewage.

If there's a way i would mount an antenna somewhere on the outside for the baofeng and wire it inside that shelter somehow so you get better reception.. Maybe a really heavy duty magnet on top of the shelter

For reception I am wondering if if you could tap and secure a swinging or magnetic cover to be used by holding the antenna out or having a mag mount stationed to utilize the opening. It should greatly improve the reception if needed to signal for help while keeping the antenna protected when not in use.

I would suggest some stick on foam or other sound deadening material just to knock down the Echo. We were working inside a large pipe one time for @16 hours and the non stop echo had the 3 of us wanting to knock each other out! Lol

capt magic, can you do a video on how you got into great shape? When I started to watch you, I think you were bulking a bit. I don't mean this as a disrespect, I think one of the best thing we can do to stay prepared is to keep ourselves in good shape. I've been lifting and running like crazy recently in order to get into better shape.

Good vid. I would add.... more bags... and maybe consider some kitty litter already in the bottom bag (2-3inches deep). Your MREs already have TP for the females in the group, but its barely enough if you are constipated from eating too many MREs in the field! Add a pouch of flushable wet wipes. Once everyone is done with their adrenaline dump, everyone will have to pee. For my fam, i have a bucket with the bucket seat attachment and a roll of scented 13gal bags from dollar tree and a small bag of litter (litter for the urine, and if someone poops, that bag gets tied up so no one 🤢). Bottled water is best thing over a large container. Consider some cheap hand held fans, the "sensu" style folding ones. Think about the top of your metal shelter now being exposed to dirct sunlight post storm/tornado. As for the fist aud kit.. make sure it also covers booboos. You have small kids, they hopefully wont need a tourniquet, but a bandaid with their favorite cartoon on it will go a long way to give some confort. As someone else mentioned in the comments, I would have one tub for each member. Shoes, clothes, undies, etc. If you have to use that shelter. The rest pf your house might be scattered to the eind with everything else. Whatever is in that shelter, is all your kids will have till redcross, fema or another agency comes to help. Best thing abput the tubs, is theyll be fairly light, and can be stacked 5 high in a corner of the shelter out of the way. Plus seating for all inside.

If you’re going to have a “Ham Radio” as emergency comms, you need to know how and what your area freqs and repeaters are on. So many people I know have the hams and think all they have to do is turn it on and start talking.

After a tornado there is a lot of dangerous debris. When you get out, you MUST have good leather work gloves to protect your hands and good, sturdy, steel toed type boots to protect your feet. Also, I don't see even a bench in there. How about someplace to sit down?

good one and while i am not in a tornado zone i do think that these buckets are a great idea... or the buckets while the umm wider sitting cover :). anyone can have a bucket with mission appropriate items and just throw it in the car if you have to take a longer trip so say 30 miles or more from home... a bag and a bucket... prob leave the bucket if walking home but it will have items to take with. its sealed and ready to go so just throw it in the car just in case.

Have you tested the radios from inside the shelter? You are inside a big Faraday cage and might not get a broadcast signal in or a cell/ham signal out. Your communication plan may be completely upended if the shelter is blocking everything.

I Like it! I suggest a couple folding cots w/poncho liners. Several camp chairs. A bigger power station to recharge tablet for movies/shows for the kids. Unless your family eats MRE’s regularly, I would suggest more kid friendly foods. 😄😁😀

Mabey a piece of pipe insulation to run around the edge of the bucket to sit on. Your wife will thank you.

Have you tested cell phone service, am/fm coverage, or ham radio service from inside that metal box? I doubt any of those will work inside the metal. Just curious if they will work.

What is that shelter wind rated for? And is it underground because if it’s not underground there is still potential for an EF4 or EF5 destroying that shelter. There’s been reports of certain powerful tornadoes damaging steel reinforced concrete buildings pretty bad.

Magic is my favorite prepper channel ….. but ….. as a life long tornado alley resident …. You missed the mark with this bucket . I can not give you a passing grade . You know when tornadoes are coming . I’ve never spent more than 15 minutes in a shelter waiting for the storm to pass . Ever . The MRE’s and water ? Nah . Number one thing in your bucket should be tarps . Even if a Nader don’t knock your house down , there is a good chance it will take part of your roof or break windows. These need to be tarped up immediately as more rain and storms are probably still on their way . 2 leather gloves . For everybody in your family. The sharp objects left behind after a tornado are many and the chances of getting cut on the rubble is real . Protect everybody’s hands . 3 hammer , nails , crowbar , basic tools …. even a car Jack can move heavy bits of rubble . Most basements in Oklahoma have a car Jack and a 4x4 to get the door open if something lands on it. 4 tornado = no power . Everybody needs a headlight . Any battery lights you can get . You are going to be dark. Get those bucket lids that are padded for hunting seats . You have no chairs in your shelter . People will want to sit while all hell is breaking out. Tornadoes are an instant hit . Either it got you or it didn’t . Cards and games are not necessary. Tornado preps should be about building back what got knocked down.

You do realize if you're in that metal storm shelter, you're effectively inside a faraday cage and radios and all that won't work inside it.
