I watched several videos with this system, where the manufacturer does not recommend that you pull the knife back like this to sharpen the tip. You just lift up when it gets close to it. Did you notice any difference by doing this way? Does it keep the same angle all the way to the tip?

You're not supposed to rotate the blade. Keep it straight and only lift when you get to the tip.

  • @RodgerMyers

Why ? Depending on the curve of the knife , rotating it may keep it at the same distance , hence same angle . I have had a Tormek for 12 years and either way works . Imo the skill of the operator has more to do than rotating vs lifting .

Rodger Myers Because if you rotate the blade as he does in the video, you create a totally different edge angle on the tip of the blade. The black knob of the holder should always be kept parallel to the tool rest.

@@jesperwall839 Yep. Thumbs up for that response. For all things Tormek, I highly recommend that anyone just starting out or with questions or is open & willing to learning more about the Tormek or similar wet stone wheel sharpening , watch the excellent sharpening channel here on KZread called "Knife Grinders". It's a German fellow as far as I can tell who lives & works in Australia & is a highly regarded, successful, knowledgeable & technical professional knife sharpener. You might think you know something until you watch & learn from this man. He has literally written a book on knife sharpening & developed many products in conjunction with Tormek for ultimate, high level sharpening. "Sharpco" is another good resource channel on KZread for Tormek sharpening. He appears to have learned, been in touch & purchased the software as well as other accessories developed from Knife Grinders. These fellows are in a whole different league than any other person uploading Tormek videos.

Good job on the recurved section. For longer knives is it difficult to remove the stone wheel due to interference on the strop side? Thanks!

  • @knifesharpeningusallc142

buzzy f thabk you! And for longer blade you will have to angle it more on the hone, if you remove the wheel the shaft that runs through the machine will actually come out. So you want to leave the stone wheel installed and just go more at a angle on the honing wheel, i suppose if you want to remove the wheel you can put a spacer like stacked washers to hold it all together!

Great vid. I'm wondering if you have used the Japanese stone? I know tormek says there is no need to strop after using the Japanese stone, but wondering what the finish is like with just the stone.

Dave Martinez I have not used it yet but I do hear great things about it! Leaves a great mirror edge and you are right no need to hone or strop after.

The Japanese Waterstone does a phenomenal job I love it

  • @5irefly

The Japanese stone (SJ250) came out of round and needed ~2mm to be taken off with the truing tool. It’s also very soft-surprisingly so. The downside of the softness is that it can catch the knife while sharpening (with or without the knife jig), gouging the stone and putting a nick in the blade. Personally a good whetstone, such as a Shapton, produces a better result more quickly.Naturally, your mileage may vary.

The reason the center of the knife has a center depression in the edge is you sharpen in both directions so the center gets sharpened twice for each far end getting sharpening once. Also your knife and your stone will last longer having the rotation going away from you.

Just use the machine as a sharpening and a honing facility. It has plenty of jigs to ensure a perfect edge -a bodged freehand effort does not give the best outcome.

That looked like it had a slight recurve, would that system work with a full or heavy recurve, like a kukuri.

Shelley Raskin for a full or heavy recurve you would need to round one of the corners of the stone, I prefer to do full or heavy recurved on my edge pro professional model with 1/2 inch stones!

You’re doing it wrong. The black plastic on the jigg should be rotated, not lifted.
