Tories show ‘desperation’ with stamp duty plans
“There's clearly some discussions going on about how long this government is going to last and when they are going to pull the trigger for an election.”
The Conservatives show “desperation” with plans to raise the threshold on stamp duty to £300,000, says Caroline Wheeler.

History. The first Government to deliberately damage the country and the economy.
Same old Tories - they created the shortage of housing to make vast profits for their landlord buddies and they have done everything since to sustain prices and maintain profits.

Get them out now!! Evil Tories have destroyed this country
The tories look after their own. They are looking to withdraw financial support from the poorest people in the country whilst at the same time they are looking to reduce stamp duty. They are deplorable.
Stamp duty won't make any difference, people can't afford to purchase a house, while investors are buying up new houses to rent out.

True, but why start helping the needy at this eleventh hour? That would be - as they like to say when there is a distinct lack of fairness behind the latest idea - unconservative.
Surely this government can’t last much longer.

@@Royboy50it’s hard to imagine Labour will be worse, it seems unlikely they will be able to bring about the kind of national regeneration they did in the late 90s/00s, but the idea they can’t do better than the woeful mess the tories have made seems fanciful to say the least. I’m not a Labour voter, but for all our sakes I hope you’re proven wrong
Why are they wasting money on gimmicks when if anything they should increase the tax threshold and help everybody, but that’s not the conservative way.
Maybe the stamp duty changes would be better recieved if we actually had an abundance of homes to buy in the first place.

Stop pointing out the elephant!
The Party Party ARE desperate, they know the game is up!
It's far too late for the Tories to redeem themselves. The damage to the country and their reputation has been done. Many times over. If they did have any will to salvage both, they've had more than a decade to achieve that end.
What they should have done raise the personal allowance, for the poorer workers. That would have been fairer.
The Tories are that weak, fragile and desperate, even an unqualified Serco crony would sign them off unfit for work
If the government only attempts to (look like/pretend)help the public when theres a pending election; there needs to be an election more often.
lol, re they can't talk too much about Menzies because of libel - Times Radio didn't seem too concerned about libel when constantly running the Angela Raynor story!
Desperate clinging on to power sadly for the country 😡😡😡😡😡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
The incredible thing about this current Tory party is just when you can't think they go any lower, they do. The juxtaposition of taking life-essential personal payments away from the mentally ill while giving further tax breaks to those who can afford to purchase multiple properties is frankly mindblowing. Sunak is the epitome of everything bad that one associates with an exceptually wealthy individual who only worships money. A crust of friendly affiability covering a core of black hole darkness.
People have showed desperation in the past for voting Tory.
They would not have billion pound hole in their finances if everybody would pay their taxes.

Israel attached an Iranian embassy first and would have retaliated if it was the other way round!!! One law for one and one law for another
Anything to stop house prices falling and making them more affordable. Meanwhile no houses getting built , people have had enough .
How South East centred are these people. Outside of the south east the average house price is £240,000. Which is below the point when you start to pay stamp duty. Outside of the south east and rise in stamp duty threshold is not a consideration for many people
Good way to stifle the spring house buying season flagging a cut in stamp duty. And increase the size of the black hole if the NI abolition happens.
You cannot fool all of the people all of the time.
If they want to help more people, then why not increase the tax thresholds? Stamp duty and inheritance tax impact a select few. Calculate the cost and raise thresholds accordingly. Then those wanting to buy a house , can in theory save more! House prices that are the killer for many, rather than stamp duty.🙄 headline grabbing 💩. As said why move now? Making me think again! 🤬🤬🤬
expect more floundering gimmicks. They can only think of tax cuts, never actually improving anything. 14 years of no investment in anything (except 1.5 billion for 3 barges)
I feel like stamp duty provokes a similar reaction to the electorate as does inheritance tax - something many people feel are unfair on principle but will be less impacted over their lifetime compared to the wealthy to whom these tax cuts will make it much easier for them to accumulate and transfer assets and thus exacerbate inequality
@Purple_flower09

I hate when political journalists use jargon to try and sound in the know. She said NICs multiple times, and each time had to explain this meant national insurance contributions. Why not say NI, a widely used abbreviation known by anyone who has ever paid it?
I don't know why they are bothering with these policies now. Tory voting intention among under 50 voters is barely 10%. Too late now, Michael Heseltine warned you years ago how young people would judge the Tory party and he's been proved right. This is the last ever Tory Government.
