Conservative candidate David Simmonds has told Sky News that Reform leader Nigel Farage should be "ashamed" after he said the West "provoked" Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Mr Farage later explained Putin was wrong to invade a sovereign nation but said the EU was also wrong to expand eastwards.

The Kremlin said the West broke a promise it made in the 1990s not to expand NATO, In a speech at the Munich Security Conference in 2007, Vladimir Putin accused Western powers of violating a solemn pledge by considerably enlarging NATO - most notably with the Baltic countries joining in the Alliance in 2004

@@richardpeters3530 Actually why does saying what he says make him an apologist. This war had its origins after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the way the USA behaved afterwards. Not on inch will Nato move towards Russia's border. How did that work out? I remember the Cuban Crisis and Putin is doing exactly what Kennedy was threatening to do but fortunately then we had more sane politicians. Given the record of USA foreign policy I would not trust them one bit. Putin has been ready to negotiate numerous times but scuppered by the West each time. Please do your home work. The real enemies are closer to home.

Ukrainian's 2008 NATO bid was rejected. After the Russians invaded Crimea and placed troops in the Donbas in 2014, the Ukrainians again sought help from its neighbours in the form of NATO but Ukraine wasn't even close to becoming a member, they were on step 0. Therefore the invasion of Ukraine wasn't about NATO, but about Russia taking away Ukrainian sovereignty and asserting control, as they have done with Belarus. Farage should know better, this is a new low for him

During WW2 , the US did not hold any elections and FDR remained in the Oval Office (White House) for 12 years ...more than 2 Presidental terms. In Ukraine there is an ongoing war and holding elections during wartime is very dangerous and problematic. Russia would do well to stick their nose into their own problems/issues and only intervene if asked to.

So NATO should have rejected Finland's bid for NATO too? The Baltic countries for instance desperately wanted to be in NATO, knowing that Putin or Russia cannot be trusted. They have been right. Should NATO have said no? Seems to me that it is the sovereign decision of a country to decide that they want to be in NATO and that there is no reason to put Putin above these countries wishes.

The Putin is Hitler 2 argument is also oversimplified so ill informed sky news viewers will support the government actions. A large percentage of the country is ill informed or only listens to what they want to hear, not just Farage supporters. The agreement was with the West before the wall come down that now have a country like Poland et cetera would join NATO that was the agreement with Russia and we never kept that agreement. We let these countries into NATO is the problem we went against our word as a western society

read the memoir "I am against all war" by Mikhail Gorbachev (the guy who sign the document) He said NATO expansion were never even discussed with him before signing that agreement. NATO never promise not to expand, otherwise they would have changed their charter to stop the Baltic from joining before or after signing the understanding with Gorbachev. They never did, and Russia never even mentioned it (Baltic expansion) until some 31 years later by Putin.

The memoir was made in 2014, and it's quite obviously he knows what he was takling about and I quoted The topic of “NATO expansion” was not discussed at all, and it wasn’t brought up in those years. I say this with full responsibility. Not a singe Eastern European country raised the issue, not even after the Warsaw Pact ceased to exist in 1991. Western leaders didn’t bring it up, either. Another issue we brought up was discussed: making sure that NATO’s military structures would not advance and that additional armed forces from the alliance would not be deployed on the territory of the then-GDR after German reunification. Baker’s statement, mentioned in your question, was made in that context. Kohl and [German Vice Chancellor Hans-Dietrich] Genscher talked about it. Everything that could have been and needed to be done to solidify that political obligation was done. And fulfilled. The agreement on a final settlement with Germany said that no new military structures would be created in the eastern part of the country; no additional troops would be deployed; no weapons of mass destruction would be placed there. It has been observed all these years. So don’t portray Gorbachev and the then-Soviet authorities as naïve people who were wrapped around the West’s finger. If there was naïveté, it was later, when the issue arose. Russia at first did not object.

Just seen professor mearshimer make a great point that if putin wanted to march through Europe as the west says why would he start the war with limited numbers of troops and then be willing to sit at a negotiating table?

There are many reasons. It could be that he aimed to use salami tactics, and that invading Europe is an end game, with Ukraine being an intermediate step. Then it failed in Ukraine because he was lied to by his generals and/or underestimated his potential enemies, He also isn't negotiating, he is giving ultimatums.

Totally agree about the research , re: being a former Soviet republic, Ukraine had deep cultural, economic, and political bonds with Russia , and the reason as a country it choice greater independence for itself as a sovereign state while looking to align more closely with Western institutions, including the EU and NATO.. very much like the other former bloc countries !

Its moved 1000 miles east!
I totally agree with Farage and also, why was thousands of military age men in Germany watching Ukraine football last night, while their own countrymen are sacrificing themselves to fight for their country

Farage didnt say Putin was justified in invading Ukraine .He said in that ten year old speech in the EU Parliament ,the expansion of the EU and NATO was a provocation to Putin .Farage said this 2014 long before Putin invaded Ukraine
I'm no apologist for Putin but NATO has been encouraging Ukraine to work with NATO. If Ukraine were to join NATO then potentially they could cite nuclear weapons in Eastern Ukraine which is 490 km from Moscow. When Russia parked nuclear weapons in Cuba in 1962 it nearly started world war 3. Farage is correct in stating that NATO has been provocative. We are now paying the price by subsidizing and supplying weapons to Ukraine.

NIGEL FARAGE IS RIGHT !!! I remember the CUBAN crisis and NATO said to Russia it would not encroach on its borders and after the breakup of the USSR that's exactly what's happened. I'm not saying what's right or wrong about that but just Farage is right about the borders, and i've heard lots of politicians say the same over the years with no front page headlines ,Funny or what ?

Well NATO did keep expanding eastwards after agreeing not to that is just a fact.
Russia was not provoked. NATO was set up to stop Soviet Russian expansion. Ukraine can decide whatever it does with it's own territory.
