Tori is literally Evil (Why does the show frame it like she's not?)

Фильм және анимация

The result of 3 months of torture.. My first go at the video essay genre. Today, we talk about Victorious and the traumatic experience I had with it. I somehow manage to go into esoteric ramblings about art, propaganda, Rashomon, advertising and the capitalist dystopia.
Feel free to tell me what you think, if you agree, if I'm full of crap, whatever. (Just remember this was my first go at this sort of thing, so be gentle)

Here lies my very first video essay (that the algo has now chosen to boost for some reason). Still keeping it public because I think it's a good thesis for the stuff I plan to discuss on this channel but ofc there are technical issues. Be sure to check out my more recent stuff.

Emily from Emily in Paris reminds me of Tori. They both are already talented at what they do, but there are more talented people around them despite the show wanting us to love the protagonist the most. They are given opportunities out of nowhere and also don’t have decent character arcs since they never really change. They are cis straight white women with brown hair who we are supposed to relate to but they are just out of reach for achievable beauty for the average person since they cannot be “average.” They steal boyfriends (though I believe the fault is on the men too) and are antagonistic to those around them all behind a smile and we are supposed to root for them. They have quirky close friends that pack in diversity while also being racist stereotypes. Their names are in the title for crying out loud. ICarly has its fair share of problems but the family dynamic of Spencer and Carly helped it.

I agree with everything you said, except Victoria Justice isn't white. Her mom is Puerto Rican, which makes her Latinx. However, Victorious whitewashes her and casts two white people as her parents, which is super problematic. It's funny because Daniella Monet who plays Trina is of Chilean descent so you have 2 latinx people cast as siblings with white parents. Wild.

Fun fact about that child actor casting call that you heard on the radio, almost all of those things are bogus unless you actually live in LA or New York. Pretty much only useful for commercials for local businesses and peddling scam acting and modeling classes to overeager stage parents I seriously thought that that one ad I was in for a local mini golf course was going to be my ticket to becoming the next Miley Cyrus

Tori is my favorite character from the show so I was ready to defend her cause these videos are usually a Tori hate fest and the character has gotten enough hate. I'll still add a little. I saw nothing wrong with her kissing beck in the first episode. Yes, Jade deserved it and Beck should've stopped it. I'm glad they didn't go the 'bigger person' route. I feel like Jade would've hated her anyways because she did even before the kiss happened. The character had flaws just like everyone else in the show and actually had character growth by the end. Also, while watching this show I never looked at it as some showdown or them pushing it onto us that Tori was the best. I just watched it because I enjoyed it and liked Victoria/Tori. So I never go it when everyone would talk about that. I never overanalyzed the other characters not singing much or whatever. It was just not their show. They weren't the main characters. But I enjoyed this video (it took an interesting turn). The editing was nice. Though thee audio fluctuated a bit too much.

You confuse authorial intent and character motivation. Tori IS written as a selfinsert for narcisstisic desires the viewer holds, but thats the writing level of her. The character Tori does not steal her sisters big moment, as it was the only productive thing she could do in the moment where Trina was already unable to perform. She didnt cause the ailment of her sister, the writers did. Thats an important difference you miss. Her bullying back of the bully Jade is not hero behavior, but it is her reacting with the same meanness to something that was first done to her. Its not heroic but understandable as she needs to make herself safer by gaining some status in the new social structure where clearly no one defended her enough from being bullied (especially the teacher, wtf, thats obviously the more glaring issue in those scenes and you focus blame on the teen girl). When shes rubbing the guys chest with the coffee, she doesnt know he has a girlfriend yet, so thats not her fault, and he clearly flirts back. So on a writing level it sure is a meetcute but thats the writing level. When characters are written to bump into each other, they were not stalking each other to wait for the perfect opportunity to bump into each other intentionally. A meetcute is the author showing their intent for the characters, while the characters dont share that intention yet. Tori is just thrown into a social structure made out of people who act in ruthless selfserving ways and she reacts by being the same way and not the bigger person, which is morally meh but very common for scared teenagers in every highschool so "evil" is a stretch. THE HOTGUY IS AT FAULT more because he is more responsible for HIS OWN relationship, than Tori is for her bullys relationship. I found it sexist that you blame her for his cheating, when she is part of it but he is clearly more responsible. I know its just a silly show, but that way of thinking is very disturbing and harmful to women I know in real life, thats why I point it out.

I'm sorry, but this is one of the worst video essays I've ever seen. At several points you seem lack basic media literacy. You describe the events so broadly that you misrepresent them for your own needs. It would be one thing if Tori found out Trina was unable to sing in the showcase and then immediately jumped in with an excited offer to go in her place, but that's not what happens at all , Tori doesn't want to go on and actually has to be stripped , changed into a dress against her will and be pushed on the stage(It's actually really uncomfortable to watch , but that's a different discussion ). If you are annoyed that the world contrived around her to make the center of attention, that's fair criticism, but that's not the fault of the character. having things come to easily to you does not make you "Evil". Characters are not held responsible for things they don't know or for the situations the writers put them in. She did not know Beck had a girlfriend. Flirting with a guy you later find out has a girlfriend is a very different action than flirting with a guy you know has a girlfriend. As for kissing Beck later on, I think this is pretty normal revenge , at least by sitcom standards. Jade wasn't just normal mean, she dumped coffee on Tori's head on her first day of school just because she happened to be new and not know Beck had a girlfriend, so it makes sense that Tori's comeback had to be pretty extreme. Yeah , if I heard about this happening out in the real world it would be pretty bad, but if Tori handled the situation like a reasonable real life human, (by telling an authority figure, and Jade would have gotten detention or suspension) and their would have been no plot and no character development. Characters in sitcoms almost always solves things through schemes, lies, and trickery so you are just going to have to suspend your disbelief. Also I'm I'm fed up with words like "narcissist". You are not a psychologist and seem to misunderstand what narcissist actually is. Narcissist are people who aren't capable of empathy and Tori constantly does things a narcissist wouldn't be able to do, like checking on Andre when he gets depressed about the diddlybops situation, taking the punishment in stage fighting, comforting Jade after she broke up with Beck and then helping he get back together with her, helping Jade put on her play, bringing Rex back to life so Robbie wouldn't be sad, ect. Many video essayist just seem to see "Narcissism" as interchangeable with "selfish", which is interchangeable with "occasionally does selfish things", which in this case is interchangeable with "occasionally does things that can kinda, sorta be misconstrued as selfish if you squint hard enough." You didn't even manage to convince me that Tori isn't nice much less that she's "Evil".
