The Existential Horror of Barbie

Фильм және анимация

I hope I can do this iconic franchise justice in this pseudo-retrospective think piece exploring this fascinating piece of culture.. and a paradox that quite literally keeps me up at night.

this was so beautiful, as a leftist barbie fan my #1 barbie recommendation to convince others of barbies marxism is barbie princess charm school. Shows a late stage capitalist dystopia where proletariat overworked barbie lives in the urban ghetto. shows failure of unitary governments, especially ones run by political elites to address problems of the lower classes like good infrastructure in outlying areas (her apartment is surrounded by urban sprawl, pot holes, noise pollution from subways, area being described as dangerous and unsafe), medicare (no nationalized healthcare in barbies world she has to support both her little sister and sick mom), gentrification (the queen plans to remove poorer neighborhoods for sake of beautification and green spaces). the princess charm school sticks the only 2 racial minority students and the poor kid into a room together, and all the future royal elites appropriate working class culture when they think blaires outfit made of cut up clothes is cool (perfect example of reverse hierarchal diffusion). Classism is the biggest theme in the movie with commoners being referred to as completely different people to royals. my favorite line is when blaire protects her people when the queen wants to bulldoze the ghetto,"People live in those areas you just knocked down, my neighborhoods there, how are those people supposed to move? theyre like me, they don't have any money." of course when she gets her nemesis to abdicate the throne she just becomes queen herself instead of creating a democracy, it still preaches how working class people should have autonomy over decisions affecting themselves.

Classism is a concern of many who are not convinced Marxism is the solution. Democracies have their own challenges, and completely restructuring a government system is a long, time consuming process, but if you're going to do it, it's easier to achieve from a position of power.

You know, i usually drown myself in deep mental thought of like, "we need change, i dont want to die on an earth that cant survive. I want to be taken seriously in the work place as a woman of color. I want to save our planet, i want people to feel accepted. I want...i want." I get so depressed because i realize im only one person. But realizing that small change is still change helps a lot. Barbie was made to show girls children what they could be but she was still created by a capitalistic money hungry organization, but what matters is how she inspires us to change things. Im just one person, i know that, but i cant dwell on the fact im just one, inspiring people to do good deeds, even as one person shows what barbie still means to this day. Barbie could be anything, but she was only one barbie, thats why she inspired people to be anything too.

When i was a child i bought Barbie of swan lake DVD and in the special features there was a documentary called The music in you. They interviewed successfull girls that played classical music. And in that interview was Nicola Benedetti. My brother loved that segment and it inspired him to play the violin. Now he is a proffesional musician and lives in Germany.

At the beginning i didn't understand why the algorithm recommended me this video, had i not been doing my hair i probably would've abandoned halfway through as i felt this wasn't going to be the usual deep dive that would've been full of nuance and hard-hitting questions and conclusions, but i'm glad i stuck around till the end, the way the video morphed was so sudden and seamless at the same time, that by the time you were getting existential i was like... "Wasn't i watching a Barbie deep dive?", i even had to double check to make sure, and there was the title proving thay yes, i was still watching that Barbie deep dive i clicked, surprised and confused i kept warching as i was interested in how you were gonna wrap up everything, and i have to say, that conclusion helped me a lot, i have recently been struggling with my hero complex, as i want to somehow change the world in radical ways just by being myself, but have been feeling distressed about how that may be unlikely and utopic, and have had internal discussions surrounding that, your video really helped me remind myself of a point i had long heard and have long been discussing internally, and one i think that may be the most realistic, going for small change. It may not seem like much, but you never know who you are transforming by being you, you don't know how much you are changing the world by inspiring people, changing a single person's viewpoint our outlook for life is earth-shattering, who knows how much hate and bitterness that person would've carried and fostered had you not been around, who knows how clueless or ignorant to a certain topic they may have been had you not talked about it and made them question themselves. I guess what i'm going for is small change is change, perhaps not the one you would've wanted but it doesn't make any less impactful, you don't know how much that one thing, that one action, that one person you helped change can help the overall world, but you know that is a step in the right direction, your contribution may have helped cancel something much sinister, and it most definitely adds to that snowball that gets bigger and bigger everyday, waiting to implode and cause that big impact you so much desire. I thank you for helping me in my journey of shifting towards a "small change" mentality, i may not live by it today, but i know that if one day i do live by it, this video would've been a contributor to it, a small but helpful contributor reminding of how life truly works, helping me shift from the idealism of youth towards something else, another mindset that as much as i want to conciously construct, i will never be able to fully know and articulate until i live by it. Thanks for your video, never delete it, you never know who may need it ❤.

This got so deep that I'm going to have to rewatch it. Incredible amount of thought and introspection involved here. I'm a sociology student (currently doing my master's on gender and sports culture) and I have a vested interest in the cycle of empowerment and disenfranchisement. Capitalism has a way of commodifying what it oppressed. Indeed, white women were (and still are) oppressed by white men, but their empowerment is mainly focused on the empowerment of ONLY white women. As such, Barbie is a symbol of the resistance AND obedience to the capitalist white supremacist patriarchy. While she embodies the inherently white nature of beauty standards (while all other outliers are inherently racialized and therefore "ugly"), she also gently pushes back against the patriarchy from which she was formed by inspiring young girls to dream of their futures outside of child rearing. I really like how this ties into your stunning conclusion on inspiration. Barbie is in no way able to change the world (and the most recent movie is a reinforcement of such archaic pop feminism that this point still stands), but she is able to inspire children into aspiring for a better (more Marxist?) world. No one can do it all, but they can lay some of the groundwork for others to push further. Thanks for this amazing video! I needed a healthy dose of existential horror today. I almost got too comfortable in my paradoxical socialist existence in a capitalist system 💀

Yes!! Absolutely agree with everything! Your the conclusion was just utterly beautiful, summed up exactly how I feel Barbie should be understood! Barbie is warped and molded to fit the white patriarchal capitalist ideals, because she was made that way by her ‘creators’. But yet a rainbow of love, kindness, and generosity peaks through and shines out. Watching Barbie as a young girl (2005-10, best era!) I was molded and inspired by her adventurous, mythical, and loving spirit.

I absolutely loved this video! The dedication you have to watches every single barbie movie is insane!!!:The early barbie movies literally raised me. I have so many fond memories of watching and rewatching the movies with my sisters and cousins. My sister and I had a lot of dolls from the movies (the marketing worked lol). Rewatching these movies as an adult and recognizing the leftist and queer themes makes me so happy. It’s like my childhood "grew up" with me. For example, watching princess and the pauper now, I always cry during the song about the dog. I have come out and left the religion I grew up with. That song and Barbie herself taught me that it is okay to be different, and that I am worthy of love regardless of how well i fit into society. Thank you for such a well thought out video! I'm excited to see what you create next! ❤

this video is so well made and amazing im so serious. At first glance, it is another video essay going to deep in a topic when it didn't really have to with a clickbait bonkers title but their is so much about barbie that can and should be un-earthed. Im not even joking this opened my eyes to so much to things that are pretty much/more or less on the surface, the points that you pointed out were actually mind blowing, mind bogglin, mind altering even why not. As someone that enjoyed barbie and barbie movies growing up i thouroughly enjoyed this video in a celestial and orgasimic level, watching you narrate your points and findings (idk i feel like im using the wrong words) and how you talked about art and artists just made me weak on my knees, JUST BRILLIANT. Ofcourse i cant mention everything you said, i dont have the best memory, but what i do remember is when i heard specific things you said i squealed inside full of agreement and joy. The way you somehow brought Evangelion and Barbie in the same plane is just ASTONISHING. Amazing vid 10/10 50 minutes well spent would share would (not) watch again 👍

The interesting thing is this is both more current Barbie media and Evangelion seem to have somewhat of the same message. That were not just the clothes we wear or the superfical things we own which is true. But their point kind of devolves into but were not anything we do outside of our minds or physical selves. It would be like someone walking up to Jesus and telling him hes not personally defined by the miracles he perfomed or dying for our sins but by some truer internal DEEPER form of himself that should make him happier outside of anything he did for the outside world and he should just focus on that. But most people find that way of thinking rediculous. By that form of philosophy then EVERYTHING we do is superflous and meaningless. Nothing has any worth. all actions are as spiritually empty as doing something self destructive like substance abuse or blatant crime of any form. The Barbie movie outright says neither of the main characters are defined by literally any action or like in anything they did in their doll life. Any action they performed is meaningless, every life choice is pointless. Every plot point devolves both Barbie and Ken into figures that any good was just as frivolous and emotionally empty as any harm. Even at one point America Ferreras character asks why cant their be a plain Barbie that looks like most women and isnt perfect in everything she does. But many critics point out in Many scenes there is a plus size Barbie who many would say does represent the "Average" woman who would be a fan of the toys but the film also makes it seem as if shes not good enough for that point and is also hollow as a aspirational figure. Just as their should be limits on superficiality, there are also limits on what is and isnt meaningful. Barbies critics seem to be trying to make her trully Plastic just a empty figure who shouldnt be inspirational even as a fictional character and anyone who looks to her should just apparently just be happy with simply existing and find No fullfilment in anything they do outside of that base existence.

I think it's more about the emotional connections she forms with other people. When it comes to men (or Kens), they're almost only made to move the plot, they aren't important for her personal development, or self discovery journey. Meanwhile, other women (or Barbies), have meaningful impacts in her life. Yes, saying she is a lesbian can be an exaggeration, but let's be honest... She has more chemistry with her "friends" than her "boyfriend" and that's something that's been pointed out for a long time.

@@leanetaillandier70 Many straight women have deep and impactful female friendships. The current trend in media to try to sexualize any deep relationship is highly problematic. Most of the impactful relationships in life are not sexual.

I don't think moviemakers intentionally were making Barbie a lesbian (not at first anyway). It's written for little, little girls that are more than likely more interested in friendship with other little girls, and when you're that age friendship can be like a romance.

no but talks about intersectionality are so damn important when it comes to movements. i was literally thinking about the whole “diversity, equality and inclusion” thing companies keep blasting but will stick with a certain look. it minimizes the issues and the impact of those issues on marginalized communities. i’ve said this before… you deserve a damn show

So, wait - this bff thing is not actually a real thing? I am trans and when I came out, the first thing was to find a best friend like that and while there were a few homoerotic instances over the years, and there also was this phase when I thought I was in love with her but eventually it transformed to match the friendship love that she felt for me. I know that I consciously tried to learn about womanhood by watching those movies and series that had inspired the women i knew but I now am starting to understand that she must have been going along with what she used to only know from movies and after years we noticed that friendships such as ours are really rare. To us it meant only that other people don't value their friendships enough because to us, we became more like family than our respective families. We even did friendship rituals and promised each other to remain forever friends. When she became pregnant from her new boyfriend (who i met before they started getting closer and directly thought that he would be a perfect fit for her), she was very distant during the pregnancy and nearing the end we got into a big fight because she wanted to baptise the child like the father was and I had very strong reservations. It was that time when I started to talk of her not that much as my best friend anymore but instead as basically my sister because I feel like we have just become family. I eventually gave up on dating women and eventually on any dating beyond friendship with benefits... Felt like I lost my ability to love even though I did fall in love a couple of times and last Beltane, I conmected to a guy online and what was supposed to be an intimate friendship with bemefits turned into something else that became extremely important to me and to him too and I just became used to feeling this kinda sisterly but also kinda inappropriate between real siblings at times sort of love for her and lately, I started to wonder if because we went through hell together for such a long time, we might have bonded in a more sibling like way. Sometimes I wonder if it's maybe actually a sort of asexual love between us but that idea only works in my polyamorous perspective while for her being monogamous, it's simply that she feels start a family love for him and best friends love for me. Noe, I had a gut instinct thst something about this video might trigger me but I never knew that Barbie (and generally female best friend relationships) often have a second layer of a lesbian relationship shining through. Now, I feel like something is about to make sense but that I really wish it didn't. Like what if these very intimate mostly asexual (finding each other attractive and there was something before I had bottom surgery, really long ago) friendships amongst women that just happen between women who just happen to be bisexual in different shades and who just happen to both be beautiful and therefore see each other this way... I mean those friendships do also exist don't they? Then again, the thing we have today where we aren't seeing each other almost every day anymore and even not write in WhatsApp for entire days without being in a fight - flash of realization, don't love it - like we have a good thing going. I didn't end up having the child we both wished for (like not the same child necessarily, we just both wished to become pregnant and believed it was impossible - which only for me was actually true) but she did. And she has a great guy to support her. I found a guy who is also kinda great. Didn't expect it to end up getting this deep though. It's a good place to stop questioning this special friendship because we are both in relatively good situations right now and we are in happy partnerships and our friendship hasn't been this relaxed for long... Also, i kinda accidentally steered this fwb into becoming more and more of a relationship because over the months I got addicted to his presence and eventually (as in: yesterday) it hit the point where I felt like I had no more options but to tell him that I can't continue seeing him unless he agrees to see me at least once a week even if only for a couple hours at worst. Like, I know that it's probably not asking much of a partner but it was supposed to be a friendship with great sex, being healthy for each other and neither side doing anything at all they don't truly want. Next thing (as in a bit over 4 months later), I threaten to end it to enforce a fucking schedule and I just couldn't continue with him otherwise and we had just kinda promised to hold on to each other because neither wanted to lose the respective other and so I didn't see not telling him and just fleeing as an option and being okay with less, I just wasn't and I couldn't do anything to change it. But regarding my bff/sister, things are bright. Kinda wish I could see her and the kid more often mostly though because I have no idea of how much an aunt is involved and I'm still afraid of losing the title of aunt and I dunno. I wonder if that revelation about what I believed to be typically female bestfriendships at least partly being metaphors for lesbian relationships... Like I feel like I could and maybe even should unriddle something there but I am also afraid that all I still care about falls to ash and I have to rebirth entirely once more... Anyone have any serious thoughts on this?

Can't edit. Just wanted to add that I'm not joking or making anything up or trolling or whatever. I really am THAT naive regardless of what you can't imagine there and I assume there is no need to say that it's a true story because it's like the most basic thing in my life but just to make sure.... Thanks for reading!

Women (and men) can have close female friends without being gay. It's extremely normal for straight women to have female roommates. All the "proof" that there's gay subtext is just bright colors and friendships and feeling out of place, not living up to adult expectations, while gay kids can certainly feel these things too. They're just normal human things that most humans, particularly young girls can relate to. You could make a parallel to being autistic or wanting to be an artist rather than the doctor your parents want, etc. I don't take issue with gay kids relating to something in the movies, but I take issue that any close female friendship gets reframed as "lesbian". These are movies aimed at prepubescent young girls. Sexuality is still distant and abstract for most them, rather it's their female friendships that dominate most of their time and energy. Even in highschool, I was looking forward to being roommates with best friend more than I cared about snagging a boyfriend. That's not lesbian. It wasn't a sexual relationship. Men can also desire close male friendships and relate more to their male friends, but prefer sex with a woman. Geez.
