If you want to see another woman being notably "out there" on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno (from the same era) check out PJ Harvey doing "Rid of Me" - very hot and very unsettling

Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Tori is such a guide to me. 😃I remember a few details but it's been decades, so others please chime in! 1. I think "Past the Mission" was filmed during a visit to Spain. Tori joined a women's group doing a march through the village-- a reclamation of the public street as a safe space for women and girls (similar to "Take Back the Night" marches). I think everyone except Tori and the man playing the priest are real-life activists, families, and random townsfolk. 2. "Cornflake Girl" is really impressionistic and difficult to decipher literally, but I'm convinced it's a 90s-performance-art-style anthem about women uniting against patriarchy. She mentioned it was inspired by Alice Walker's novel Possessing the Secret of Joy, which dealt with a woman recovering from FGM while battling racism and colonialism. She was struck by how cruel women could be to other women. Like, "Who cares if you're a cornflake and she's a raisin? Hurting her doesn't do you any good. At the end of the day we've got to get out of this box before we're eaten alive. Now, where did that rabbit put the f*ing key?" 3. The rat scenes in "God" were filmed at Karni Mata, a Hindu temple in Rajasthan, India. I remember the first season of The Amazing Race went there. I don't claim this particular faith, so I can't speak for them, but from what I understand the underlying philosophy is that divinity exists in all living things, and that includes rats. It's similar to the ideas behind "sacred cows" and vegetarianism. Pretty sure the devotees constantly clean and care for the space and the rats.

Honey and Sister Janet should have been on the album proper, but luckily one can playlist it easily now. A shame we never got a music video for Honey because it was a b-side instead. Please do more live performances of hers. Live, she is a force. As stunning as the studio recordings are, she always brings something indescribable to live performance. One of the most charismatic performers there are, who always goes all-in and changes up each song for each performance. Each show is unique. An utterly brilliant artist. I think you're gonna love the album From the Choirgirl Hotel, and To Venus and Back as well. Looking forward to more Tori reactions.

Its amazing how good Tori's B-Sides are. Got a shock when I realised that under the pink is now 30 years old, still sounds fresh to me too.

About the Past The Mission video - the song is about a woman getting revenge on a serial rapist by killing him ("They found a body/Not sure it was his still they're using his name"). In the video, the man is a priest (hence the "mission" part) and Tori and the women are rebelling against him by peacefully protesting by laying down in the street. It's a beautiful video

Yeah, I skipped out on a few that aren’t my fave, to make room for “Butterfly”, “A Case of You”, “If 6 Was 9” and “Strange Fruit”…plus the “Icicle” Live Performance. Ya win some ya lose some 🤷🏻‍♂️
