You’re in for such a treat with Tori Amos’ catalog because she’s one of those very rare artists like Madonna and PJ Harvey where every single album is radically different in sound, in production, in vocal style, in theme, in presentation, in visuals… there are no two Tori Amos albums that sound alike. I hope you react to another album of hers sooooon.

I haven't watched yet but am so excited. The b-sides from the first several albums are some of her very best songs. Her catalog is an absolute embarrassment of riches.

Tori grew up playing in gay bars. Her father drove her there because the other bars wouldn't let her play. Y Kant Tori Read was a rock band she was forced to join because her record company thought no one would want to listen to a woman talking about her feelings with a piano. After that album tanked they finally let her do her thing. Her lyrics are often wrapped in literary and cinematic references and metaphors, so it's ok if you miss some of the meanings ! Upside Down is indeed about her strict upbringing, Sweet Dreams is a jab at American politicians, in Flying Dutchman she promises a brighter future for a misunderstood kid (probably her past self. The Flying Dutchman is a myth about the ghost of a pirate, you should look into it !)

Omg I love that her Dad did that! SO CUTE!!! While it flopped, I'm glad I got to hear it, the songs were still so good! Very keen to see what else she has in terms of lyrics!!!

The gay bars were the safest place for her in her Dad's view.

I absolutely would have included Here In My Head, and Ode to the Banana King Part 1 just because it's bonkers and fun.

I was considering adding them, as well as SUGAR, but since it’s been so long since he’d heard the actual album, I wanted to pick my faves, that also gave room from the Y KANT TORI READ stuff. Then couldn’t leave off the ME AND A GUN Live 😬 UNDER THE PINK album is coming and then gonna do a bigger b-side playlist after that 😜
