I was outside late last night in my neighborhood watching the first of the four "Blood Red Moons", when all of a sudden I hear this strange, "angelic sounding" music. A neighbor was listening to "Little Earthquakes" with the windows wide open in the house and this song was playing! A very surrealistic soundtrack to a very important cosmic event!

It just dawned on me why Tori Amos was such a groundbreaking artist in the early 90's. This was a time when sarcasm and apathy permeated so much of our culture. It was in the music we listened to, the movies and tv shows we watched. And then came Tori Amos with these very intimate and sincere songs. It was such a stark contrast to the immense apathy we felt at the time. It was cathartic to hear this music. As a man I felt a little awkward listening to her music because it seemed to be meant for a female audience. But it didn't matter, because even though I couldn't relate to the lyrical content of the music, my subconscious yearned for the energetic quality of her voice and her playing. Her music is still relevant today. We need more sincerity and vulnerability expressed in our culture. These qualities are considered feminine, but both men and women can have a deficit when it comes to this. I have heard that women sometimes may adapt masculine qualities in order to assimilate to thier work culture. I used to think this was only limited to office jobs or what is called 'corporate' culture. But it also dawned on me that the music and entertainment industry are also subject to this phenomenon. Think about it. Tori Amos was one of the few artists that embodied a feminine approach to her art. Even today subjects in music such as overt sexuality, partying, or what I would more generally characterize as 'Yang' energies, are what is underscored. At this point I should stop using the masculine-feminine dichotomy because sometimes people's reaction to such terms is not what is intended. If a quality is masculine it doesn't mean a woman should exclude it from her identity. If a quality is feminine a man doesn't need to exclude it from his identity. So instead, Yang could replace masculine, and Yin could replace feminine. And one can be masculine and yin, or feminine and yang without sacrificing thier sense of gender.

I remember buying the piano sheet music book for Little Earthquakes when I was 12 or so and waiting for my parents to leave the house so I could play this with all the full emotion I felt for it, because I was too embarrassed to do it in front of anyone else. I would not play this in front of anyone at all for years.

The moment: I escape into your escape Into our very favorite fearscape It's across the the sky And across my heart And I cross my legs Oh my God is so thrilling and mysterious (lyrics). I love Tori's imagination. Her lyrics are never too sweet and never too sad. I'm not sure about this word but i'd say that her view is usually double-sided and that's why I appreciate her works so much.

never listened b4....so i spent the night on my guard job listening to these. ...sorry, I'll take Susanne Vega any day of the week....Toris music is so.....all over the place. Interesting, yes. Unique, yes. But how the hell do you write this stuff...remember what you wrote....be able to put it back together....much less reproduce it in concert, successfully ...?? And forget about a memorable tune you can pull up from your own ear worm catalog in your head.....after listening all night, AND watching those intricately woven, way-out-in-left-field neurotic videos, I was left with the impression that this strangely beautiful whacked out redhead must have had some MAJOR issues as a kid.....then I listened to her "MOTHER" song.......THAT pretty much explains it. Not to mention, she's a redhead. And I'm one too....so trust me: I KNOW how f***ed-up in the head we are!! Again, if you want EXTRAORDINARY songwriting, in a form that is melodic, connected and masterfully composed & orchestrated, pull up some Susanne Vega....you won't regret it, and your earworm library will be contentedly. ..and PEACEFULLY, filled to the brim.......IMHO, of course.
