@@maniacal1870 This song is very abstract but her music isn't *actually* nonsensical, just cryptic. What she sings may sound like gibberish, but most of what she writes is profound if a person invests an effort to figure out what she is saying. That is obviously not something we usually do with popular music, and so she's really an odd fit within the music industry and it's not surprising she isn't more popularly appreciated-however, it's still a shame that she isn't.
Its truly a shame more people dont know about her. Her voice is hauntingly angelic. Im 45 and have been listening since I was a teen.

I remember reading an interview where she says she wrote this song as a reaction to her break-up with Trent Reznor. She basically said(& is saying, through this song) that she thought it was more with him, but in the end, it was like getting over a light cold. Like catching feelings, or a 'lite sneeze'. Knowing that totally changed this entire song, & all the lyrics that aren't quite clear suddenly become obvious, like "made my own pretty hate machine", which was the name of Trent & Nine Inch Nails brilliant debut album end of the 80's. They wouldve been an interesting pairing..both incredibly driven musical geniuses.
theres a silly notion that tori only appeals to women, Im a guy whos always found her music amazing, so fill with life and deepness. Several of her albums are amongst the best, most creative and best lyrics of all time. Shes an open wound at times, but her music is transformative and for sensitive people, both women and men, very healing, we'll recognise a bit of ourselves in her stories, because she not only makes songs, but short stories, mini movies that speak to all of us.

Nothing comes close to it, to me, all these years later, at age 50. This is one or her best songs, and it only grows more relevant, over time. What it has meant to me, and to m my late mother, I cannot even begin to explain in words. Tori transcends time and space. She is a rare treasure or American music history.
Tori's music convinced me that I don't need psychedelics to trip. Her sound is ethereal.
Since the beginning of her career Tori has owned that space of beauty and artistry on the verge of something chaotic and ethereal and altogether mystical. A truly unique artist that is deserving of far more attention than she has received.
Videos of this era were truly short-form art films. Beautiful.

Haven't listened to this song in easily a decade. Decided to catch up with her. I'm stunned by how powerful this song still is. I love the lush, full feel of it. It's Tori exploring new sounds and instruments...in full control of it all. It also dredges up some ugly early adult memory which came for me viscerally just now. It's not the worst thing that has happened but something I wish hadn't happened. How I let someone manipulate me into something very ugly. I loathe "her" for how she made me feel. "...make my own Pretty Hate Machine" indeed. Why am I writing this...? Tori can still get through all the defenses I suppose even after 30 years...

@@Yumicpcake i have no idea why people still dispute this when Trent is on the record saying they had a falling out related to Courtney Love. Like, it's not speculation, he's admitted it. Yet, this here...and her two prior albums, simply blew me away. I could feel all her hurt and pain and I formed a bond with her as I felt I was going through the same...or at least having the same emotions. And damn, I thought she was a physical thing of beauty as well...so small, red, amazingly emotional with her eyes and expressions...and that damn piano. All of it/her...stunning.

Anger is just a reflection of ones unright suffering, its normal to get pissed off, this person here probably went thru worse. But chose to reflect otherwise. Still wise tho
for 1996 those graphics are really top notch
I would LOVE to see a collaboration with Tori and Mike Patton.

I saw Torn on Letterman and I fell in love. Take a great pianist, add a talent for song writing and a look that is just amazing and what do you have? Ms. Tori Amos. A rare talent we were lucky enough to be born in the same age. Thank you Lord. She is perfection.

@@videoluvr4204 Not what most people think of imo or it wouldn't have been popular. If you interpret it with a strong religious context and a lot of irony : "Caught a lite sneeze, Caught a lite breeze, Caught a lightweight lightning seed" : getting pregnant Boys everywhere...precisely "Boys in their dresses" = priests/monks "You're not here" = adressing to god "But I still got that Belle Dragging my foots" = it's not a Belle, it's a Beast "Pretty hate machine " = religion "I need a big loan from the girl zone" = In need of help from the sisters? "The spire is hot" = a certain part of a male body
I love her music, even if I don't know what half of it means. I usually feel like I'm listening to a private therapy session, and even more so when watching her trippy videos.

I don’t know half of it most of the time. It’s like she sings in riddles. Very puff magic dragon 😂 but I love her music. It’s very beautiful and sad at the same time
Saw Tori in concert. Life is now spent waiting for the next time.
Although I knew and 'liked' Tori from the beginning, this is the song that made me fall in love with her! I still remember listening to it and watching the video on MTV..That was it. I run out and bought my first Tori album, Boys For Pele and never looked back. This woman, goddess is unique and there will never be another one and there shouldn't. Thank you Tori, thank you Muses.
SHE HELPED ME THROUGH MY DEPRESSIONS...😁✌️
Love this, the memories! "didn't know our love was so small"

This is still one of the amazing songs to ice skate to. I am retired with grandkids now. I am giving them a chance to hear the music which influenced me.
The first time I heard this song was when I rented her CD album at the local library (Yes! That long ago) I was smitten with her. This song blew my mind. It made me feel some type of way and even now, I still feel it in my heart. Truly a masterpiece. She should have a grammy! She has so much more talent in one finger than most of these current artist.
The chords and bassline on this track is insane. Tori is a legend.
This music is timeless
Tori is recklessly beautiful in this video. It's too bad Reznor and her never actually did an album together, they clearly influenced each other. It's strange I feel there is this weird trio of Amos, Reznor and Neil Gaiman that should have come together that never happened in this universe..

Actually, Kate Bush was her main influence. She did do a number with TOOL's, Maynard James Keenan, who is her only male equal ...

She also did a song with Reznor: "Past the Mission". He does the background vocals, and it's speculated that they dated for at period of time. The "Pretty Hate Machine" verse was just a reference to him

She was definitely influenced by Trent, and she has conceded in small part to being influenced by Kate Bush, but has attributed it equally among many influences. The sad thing is, I thought Tori was a total original until I was exposed to Kate Bush and realized Tori mimicked SOOO much of Kate's persona, including word pronunciation, and lip movement. It's almost creepy how similar they are at times, although not always.

Trent sang on Past the Mission. But you want the low down incestuous nature of 90's music read this. howisya.tripod.com/bizarrelove/ Enjoy!
She is a literal goddess. Her glory transcends any notion of description
Ghostly beautiful and hauntingly enchanting.

Hypodermic Sally but older so I like this song cause of that and her voice
I’ve been listening to the Evans Blue cover for like 8 years and I didn’t know it was a cover. Amazing.
I remember waking/baking whilst watching this video on mtv. Then, off to pre-med classes. Good times. I'll never be that happy again......
I always liked how ragged her voice sounds in some parts of this song. Sounds almost primal.
A musical genius
