Fire Nation Man is a pro-wrestling reference. During the Cold War there were a lot of pro-wrestlers who had a bad Russian accent and would get the audience mad at them and then lose on purpose in dramatic fashion. Notice "Fire Nation Man" had a bad Russian accent.

I have been following your reactions of ATLA, and I really like seeing new fans enjoying the show. I am also a huge wrestling fan and this episode is really special to me. Just some fun facts: In the world of professional wrestling, there are always "faces" (good guys) and "heels" (bad guys) with colorful characters. The Boulder (who is based on The Rock) is a face that is good at connecting the audience with his "talking skills", while a common type of heel is someone portraying as a "foreigner" to piss off the crowd (like the Fire Nation Man) 😊

Fun fact, the creators wanted to get wrestler/actor "The Rock" to do the voice actor for "The Boulder". But he was busy with other engagements and convinced a friend of his, Mick Foley another wrestler, to do it instead. Here you see Mick Foley doing his best impersonation of The Rock's wrestling character 😁

Actually Chin the Conqueror wasn’t short at all, rumour has it that Avatar Kyoshi was 7 feet tall making her the tallest Avatar ever existed!

Fire Nation man was a heel not actually from the Fire Nation. He was designed to be hated by the fans so that he could generate excitement for other fighters when he's defeated.

Do you remember when American media argues that we don't have nice and strong female characters? Avatar has two heavy punches in this idea with Toph and Kyoshi in these two episodes. They are female, badass, they are not Mary Sue's, and they kick serious asses. And Katara always was an example of that. She trains (but probably off-screen), she progresses from noob water bender and climbs the way to be considered a master by master Paku (let us not forget, a sexist and grumpy man) still in season 1. And of course, Suki. A non-bender that leads a militia fighting group that can stand against Zuko for a time (big deal, considering they are almost "civilians"). Avatar always had strong and well written female characters.

Momo, Azula and finally Toph round up my top three favorite characters! I obviously didn't want to say anything till you watched this episode. I love how in the ring, as she's avenging to get Aang back, she first creates a giant dust cloud to blind all the other earth-benders from seeing, because she doesn't need to see to earth-bend, only feel the vibrations of the earth. I remember watching this for the first time years ago, of course loving the show, but it wasn't until after 2x6 where I was like, omg this is incredible! I remember watching 8 episodes in a row one night, I just needed to see what happened next, the writing just gets so sensational! Season 2 is so emotional, enjoy the ride and get ready to bring out the tissues!

Do you remember Meng, the fortune teller's assistant from Book One? Her voice actor impressed the producers sufficiently to land herself a permanent spot on the cast as Toph.

Glad you've finally met Toph, you'll grow to love her even more as the series progresses. For me this is where ATLA really takes off with the introduction of Toph. As for "Avatar Day", love seeing Kyoshi and Sherlock Sokka. But I also agree with Sokka, that was the worst town they'd ever been to. Love that you're loving ATLA, looking forward to seeing you react to the great episodes from here to the end of book 2.

The voice actor of the guy that was in charge of that village also voiced po's dad in kungfu panda

And a suggestion mate, would absolutely love to hear like maybe a "like/dislike/in the middle" kind of tier list for the main characters so far from you both, think that'd be cool to do then see how it changes at the end of the whole series :)

Kyoshi really pulled up just to say that she murdered Chin and explain how she literally created an island

It's honestly hard to imagine this show without Toph in the group! I've honestly forgotten before that she wasn't in the group in season 1. Fun Fact: While it's _generally_ true that earthbending is based on the Hung Gar style of Chinese martial arts, Toph's earthbending is actually based on Chu Gar Southern Praying Mantis style. You can notice this especially in how she moves her arms similarly to a praying mantis while earthbending. Out of all the benders in Avatar: The Last Airbender (not sure about Korra), she is the only one with a truly unique bending style. This is a bit of a headcanon, but her unique form is likely because (as you learned in a later episode) she learned to earthbend from badger moles, who are as blind as she is.

We know that the Fire Nation has been taking over towns and villages in the Earth Kingdom for about a century. There are actually some mixed heritage Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom families. That means that there are some Fire Nation citizens that are actually Earthbenders, so it’s possible Fire Nation Man is one of those.

Well, as you guys were able to see, we got an episode where we learn a little bit more about Avatar Kyoshi and an episode where the Gaang finds an earthbending teacher for the avatar. Toph is one of my favorite characters, and she just does some really cool stuff. I am really looking forward to your reactions to the next episodes.
