The smirk at the end really captivates the entirety of the show during of which Truffles character, Toph’s being, breaks through the rock just like they broke through themselves when smirking you can literally see a bird pan out of the screen ( top right hand corner ) this same bird can also be seen @ 2 : 16, also smirking… this is pretty much the same exact smirk the rock gives toph when she closes the gate.

@@danfrank8126 Her encounter with Aang didn't actually changed her. She already completely badass when they met her in the underground arena. There is something very important in filmmaking that many directors seems to forget when doing their work: "show, don't tell". Instead of explaining what is happening, just show it. This is not a book, you don't have to describe every detail nor explain the location and the scene. Just show it. Not talking, letting the actions, the reactions, the expressions, and what is happening tell the story. That is way more powerful than any dialog, and your film has the strength of the whole Earth kingdom. You did it awesomely! It has everything is needed to have happy fans of TLA, and for those who don't know the show yet to know exactly what is happening and feel invested in it. Please, keep up the excellent work!

Not really, that's actually my biggest problem with this film. Seismic sense is a skill that someone has to learn through trial and error and it requires knowledge of earthbending as a prerequisite here she learned it without even knowing that she could actually earthbend. The show showed Toph learning from the badgermoles over a period of time this shows that it took less than a day for her to pick up seismic sense and earthbending.

She invented something nobody had ever done before, but primarily because nobody had ever thought to try. And Toph isn't the only person who could and did develop new techniques nobody had thought of before. Hama was a bloodbender. That this was possible was foreshadowed by the Foggy Swamp tribe. Lavabenders, sandbenders, bloodbenders, whatever Combustion Man was doing, … these are skills people developed because they were particularly good at their art. They had a need and thought a bit outside the box. And they learned how to do things even the Avatar cannot do.

Disagree. The audience knows Toph has super powers that compensate for her disability, but neither her or her mom knows that. If you've ever had a disabled child who likes to wander and act like an independent adult get lost, it's absolutely terrifying. I know from experience. I noticed her dad wasn't there fussing or worried sick looking for his daughter. There's a lot of blame placed on moms who make mistakes raising their kids, but the fathers are usually given a pass. Especially if they act like laid back best friends who avoid discipline.

And while I agree, having a child as independant as toph can be scary, it would be less so, if all her mother didn't ONLY see the disability. Also, although wer don't see her dad in this short film, the fandom, i feel, comes at him just as much, if not more than her mom.

She'd have to be pretty fearless to take the first step, IMO. But fearlessness may have two sources: Confidence and ignorance. She started off as fearless because she did not know and had not considered what might happen. By the end she is fearless because she knows that what happens is in her own hands. When her father came to ransom her, she allowed herself to be led away because she allowed her father's doubts and fears to sway her. But then her anger got the better of her and she said those all-important words: "Yes, I _can_." That's SO important for a person with a disability! People around us tend not to know what we can do, and they tend to make assumptions rightly or wrongly. The fact is people tend to underestimate our ability and if we believe we can't do … whatever … we aren't going to try.

wow, the actress did an incredible job, I really felt like it was the same toph we saw animated in ATLA, same mannerisms and sass, she didn't really speak, but I could just see the start to how she became who she was, knowing the secret life she'll have to be the outspoken tomboy she always wanted to be. it's just incredibly well done. The production and writing for it was great too, I could feel that defeatist feeling she would be having in that cave, could really feel with her that moment she almost resigned into the same belief that her parents had of her, that she was just a fragile little doll that had to be protected, thinking the were right and then the badger coming to help her ahh, loved this so much. Really well done.

As someone who has been interested in CGI for quite some time, the badger moles were sooooo good. There was some stuff that made them a little funky, but for a fan film, the rocks and moles worked really well for their purpose. I especially like how when toph touched the mole you could see she was touching a 3d object and it made it feel real. So well done over all, but I just wanted to mention that since not a lot of people commented on it

Just excellent. The costumes and locations felt so lived-in and the cinematography, editing and music made everything flow so smoothly. Though with basically one character and basically zero dialogue, everything was depending on a solid performance (which can be especially tricky for kids), and a solid performance is exactly what we got. So impressive - applause to everyone.
