TOPGUN - U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (March 3, 1969-Present)

The History of the real TOPGUN U.S. Navy Fighter Weapons School (3 March 1969-Present)
When two planes are engaged in a dogfight, the advantage of having a better plane can definitively make a difference, but that is only true to a certain point, as the final outcome of the duel is ultimately decided by the pilot's skills, bravery and tenacity. This is what the pilots of the US Navy and Marines are taught in the Navy Fighter Weapons School , the popular Topgun course. It’s a place where pilots get their PhD in air combat skills.

The truth of the matter is that, in addition to putting all of our faith in guided air-to -air missiles, we also had really awful rules of engagement that negated our advantages. An F-4 pilot commented that if he were to fly for the North Vietnamese he with his level of skill that he could have been an ace many times over based on how the US military was forced to conduct combat operations, especially under the Johnson Administration.

It’s also the poor tactics and improper use of the A2A missiles as well as poor maintenance. Turns out to work as advertised you need to use them in the proper way, a way that the Air Force didn’t bother to teach its pilots and the Navy didn’t until after 1969

USAF did a study that if a pilot survives his/her first 10 combat missions, the chance of survival is much greater than average, that's why they created the Red Flag exercise to give the aircrews a taste of combat without actually being in combat. Red Flag is a huge air combat exercise, not like TOPGUN a training course for potential instructors. However, USAF does have its own weapons school, it specializes in the type of aircraft, for example, the F-16 weapons school, A-10 weapons school, B-52 weapons school, etc. The USAF weapons school is based in Nellis also.

@@thanakonpraepanich4284 no, it was the Soviet Union 's collapse that catastrophically set behind Mikoyan for decades, starting from the canned MiG 1.44 project, and the Sukhoi Flankers being finally opened up to foreign customers (which didn't happen during Soviet times), the success of which prompted the Russian Government to give more funds to Sukhoi instead. The 29 was a massive success compared to the 23, so many previous customers of the 21 bought that in droves compared to the Flogger. Even western pilots sang praises about it when they did joint exercises with Germany, which inherited a lot of the former DDR's MiG 29s and kept them until the end of the 90s when they were either retired or sold off to Poland. Soviet planes did not suffer from the "monkey model" syndrome quite like their tanks did.

Some incorrect things about the early Top Gun in the 1960s. The first Navy adversary aircraft used at Top Gun were F-8 Crusaders based at Miramar, NOT A-4 Skyhawks and T-38s. The Navy Adversary A-4s were specially upgraded A-4Es, A-4Fs, and TA-4Js. The Es and Fs had more powerful engines than the standard combat A-4Cs, Es, and Fs used in Vietnam. They did not show up at Top Gun until the mid-1970s, as did the T-38s. The T-38s were eventually replaced by F-5E Tigers by the early 1980s. The reason why the F-8s were used, was first Crusader squadrons still trained in aerial gunnery and dogfighting in the 1960s, where as most of the US military practiced bomber interception. Second, F-8s were the 2nd most numerous fighter aircraft at NAS Miramar, as by the late 1960s, almost all the remaining Crusader squadrons were based there.

Good video, but you forgot about a huge array of factors that increased the capabilities of F-4 phantoms and changed the situation in the air. You state that training 1% of pilots increases the KDR of whole navy air group up to 13 from barely 2. Not the new APG-59 Pulse-Doppler radar that could see and track aircraft next to the ground (basically main problem of BVR at those times), not the new AIM-9G which had capability to handle twice the overload compared to early 9bs. Not the friend-or-foe systems that made it possible to recognize friendly aircraft and do the job that F-4 was designed to do - large missile carrier. Not a Combat Tree system that exploited a bug in MIG-21's IFF. Not the loss of the air superiority due to the successful counter-sam measures (read about wild weasels) and AGM-45 Shrike. Not because of the Operation Bolo after which Vietnamese migs we're grounded for 4 month. It was top gun 100%.
