The F-35 Lightning II is the truly remarkable and far fetching futuristic piece of equipment. With the modern avionics and electronics, stealth capabilities and superb weaponry it pushes the quality bar forward and sets up high standards of the modern airplanes.
Designed to fly in any weather and condition, to vertically take off and land, utilize 360 degrees view and the futuristic helmet mounted display system it should provide NATO and its allies with the state of the art technology capable of protecting it against the potential adversaries.
Would this $400 billion airplane be able to turn the tide and provide security to the NATO countries?

    What people fail to understand is that: 1 trillion involves maintenance, software, operator training, and other costs for its operational life until 2070. No "Legacy"/"Teen Series" fighter development (F-14, F-15, F-16, F/A-18) has been calculated this way. A capabilities insight: "Those situations highlight the fifth-generation capabilities of the F-35. We’re still able to operate and be successful. In a lot of cases we have a large role as an integrated quarterback,” said Lt. Col. Yosef Morris, 4th FS commander. “Our ability to continue to fuse and pass information to the entire package makes every aircraft more survivable.” During the first week of Red Flag, the F-35 pilots flew in a larger force of Blue Air in a counter-air mission. More than 60 aggressor aircraft were flying against them, blinding many of the fourth-generation aircraft with “robust” electronic attack capabilities. “I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Wood said. “This is not a mission you want a young pilot flying in. My wingman was a brand new F-35A pilot, seven or eight flights out of training. He gets on the radio and tells an experienced, 3,000-hour pilot in a very capable fourth-generation aircraft. ‘Hey bud, you need to turn around. You’re about to die. There’s a threat off your nose.’” The young pilot then “killed” the enemy aircraft and had three more kills in the hour-long mission. “Even in this extremely challenging environment, the F-35 didn’t have many difficulties doing its job,” Wood said. ‘That’s a testament to the pilot’s training and the capabilities of the jet.” "Hill Airmen, F-35 a lethal combo at Red Flag"-AF . The F-35, despite all the Woozle/disinformation effect on the fighter, will be the main face of Western fighter aviation for decades to come.

    One thing not mentioned is the F-35's performance in Red Flag. They dominated the skies bringing in 15:1 kill ratios and gave other aircraft real time situational awareness across the battlespace that made their jobs easier. Then in 2019 they performed even better, even though they were being hit with constant jamming and GPS disruption, they basically controlled how the battles played out. They were essentially the best quarterback of the skies you could ask for. They could read the plays, tell everyone the plays, and execute their own plays almost unchallenged

    The C is NOT STOVL/VTOL. Has larger wings with foldable wingtip sections, larger control surfaces for improved low-speed control, stronger landing gear for the stresses of carrier arrested landings, a twin-wheel nose gear, and a stronger tailhook for use with carrier arrestor cables. The larger wing area allows for decreased landing speed while increasing both range and payload.

  • @benanders4412

    @benanders4412

    Generally, you don't want to fly supersonic with a stealth aircraft anyway. It heats up the body temperature of the aircraft, making it easy to spot on the infrared. And it makes them less maneuverable. Most aircraft try to avoid flying supersonic for this reason. They will only do so when they have no other option. It's very rare for fighter jets to go supersonic. Generally only around 1% of their total flight time.

    @@benanders4412 The F-22 allegedly has supercruise and unless the composite skin can't handle a few hundred degrees C then heat is not a problem for either skin or infrared. The jet from the engine exhaust is near a 1000 degrees or there abouts which is the actual source of infrared energy that FLIR systems track and what weapon systems lock onto. The actual reason it isn't done is because it's quite inefficient to travel above about mach 0.8 (the transonic range), esspecially for anything that isn't time sensitive. This drag level remains high even at high mach levels but at the tail end of the transonic range the drag starts dropping again enough to maybe warrant flying at that speed if it's necessary (which it generally isn't)

    Affordable is not a word i would use for the f-35. It's far more expensive than most other aircraft to both buy and maintain. The f-35 has come a long way. And it's a good aircraft overall. But the original project as a whole to replace the f-15/f-16/f-18/a-10 and the harrier with just one cheap mass production aircraft can be called a failure. It's one of the major weaknesses of the aircraft. Other countries can field 3 aircraft of the 4+ generation for the same price as one f-35. This could become a huge problem if other countries can develop radar or missiles better capable of tracking stealth aircraft. Stealth the one advantage the f-35 has over 4+ generation aircraft. If they solve that one problem {they probably will in time} it's just a more expensive inferior aircraft.

This is purely theoretical and unlikely to be functional with today's current state of technology, but the Chinese are reportedly forging ahead to push their knowledge of EM which can be applied to rail guns, super long range artillery and... The -35 has its uses but it’s not worth the price tag. Israel, for instance, looks to it’s going to be using its F-35 fleet primarily for light precision bombing & (probably) surveillance, roles it’s really quite well suited for. In the past the Israeli’s have relied on F-16s & F-15s to take out vital strategic targets-The Iraqi & Syrian nuclear reactor sites come to mind. The -35 is a much better option for that kind of mission. The -35 isn’t set up well to serve as an interceptor or CAS unit but they don’t need it for that. I’m also kinda intrigued by the -35s potential for coordinating “loyal wingman” operations in the future near. I’m still not a huge fan of the Lightning II & I don’t think we should be buying so many units but that doesn’t mean it’s a total lemon.

    3:40 your summation of the F-35C is incorrect. The F-35C cannot take off and land vertically, only the B variant has the vertical lift system. The F-35C achieves short take off and landing through the use of catapults and arrestor cables but vertical take off and landing is not one of its capabilities.

    ^LightningAssault that's the F-35B you're describing, it typically uses a rolling short takeoff to increase payload/reduce fuel consumption compared to a purely vertical takeoff As the F-35C doesn't have the vertical lift system it cannot vector its thrust down perpendicular to the ground so vertical takeoff is impossible

    Aside from the stealth characteristics - which I think the Lockheed Martin engineers and scientists solved, using the technology from F-22 - the WTOL capability is difficult. That probably will not be such a problem for us Finns as the F-35 variant we purchase does not need such a feature. There are multiple technical issues with WTOL. I am amazed by the fact that the Americans solved those problems! My kudos to all the scientists and engineers. You are my heroes. I love you, people. For example, downward thrust causes an extreme dust intake back into the engines. Depending on the ground content below, of course. But you cannot expect to land on a clean tarmac surface, now can you? The other thing, known by the helicopter pilots, is the negative air pressure underneath the aircraft. It is potentially lethal. It means that the downward thrust causes a kind of vacuum below, resulting in a total loss of lift. Then the craft will just drop. You cannot do anything to prevent it. Pilots do know about that phenomenon so they avoid staying in one place for too long time. This kind of stuff.

    These crafts are like the ones in the TV series Space 1999 - Moonbase Alpha. The dream come true. Sure, providing spare parts is a huge problem. But adding for example Finns to the arsenal support is a smart move: We can build many of the parts 🙂 The Americans know that. I love F-35, absolutely.

    Fun fact, when Belgium joined the F35 program there was a relatively long negotiation period because to agree to the expense Belgium wanted to get something out of it. The result was on one side a contract to produce parts and munitions locally providing about 700 jobs and secondly the setting up of a software development lab for the F35 in the local universities. The intent being to eventually turn the F35 into the swarm leader of a pack of unmanned fighter drones.

    Whenever someone tries to talk about the F-35 a whole bunch of morons always butt in and say stupid crap like it is slow because the top speed of the F-16 is faster, bar the fact the F-16 can not reach it's top speed with the external fuel tanks and weapons it has to carry to be of any use (unlike the F-35), or that it was beat in a dogfight vs an F-16 (bar the fact it was a prototype F-35 that had strict flight control computer limits that prevented it from performing as well as it could).
