TOP5 HARDEST Shoot Em Ups on the SuperNES

Ойындар

Welcome to my BRUTAL SHMUPS series, this time with my Top 5 Hardest Shoot Em Ups on the SuperNES. Every episode I cover a new console focusing on the hardest, most brutal Top 5 Shmups on the system. The Super Nintendo (SNES) didn't have a ton of Shoot Em Ups, but it was a matter of quality over quantity. Games like Axelay and Gradius by Konami, Space Megaforce by Compile, two RType games by IREM, and Macross Scrambled Valkyrie are just some of many excellent shooters on the SuperNES. And these are my Top 5 picks for the hardest of them all on the Super Nintendo. Do you agree? Or which shmups would you pick instead? Let me know in the comments!

    The SNES has a much smaller shmup library than the PCE or Genesis, that's a fact, but some of them are just as good like the top shmup titles for those systems. They absolutely hold up against them, and also the unique mode 7 effects are timeless and always very nice to look at!

    YES!!!!! I finally found a channel dedicated only to shmups after a decade of searching! You mention the novelty of Acrobat Mission being a game where you only die from enemy fire. That reminds me. The first shmup I ever bought for Dreamcast was Gundbird 2; A bullet hell where you can fly up against your enemy only to have your main weapon powered down. But remember its a bullet hell. The shots in their hundred numbers per blast is enough to fuck you up. The selling gimmick was that it had Morgan of Dark Stalkers as a hidden character and is even on the cover. And every character has 2 selective endings. If you played 2 player co-op and beat it, the ending would be unique based on whatever two characters you beat it with. You could even experience 2 player story in 1 player mode via, a simple mode option where your characters take turns with each life you have remaining. Basically, you get killed in said mode and with the next life you use the other character you chose while they still share their still framed cut scenes throughout. (bought it when it came out at less than $20. Now it's over a hundred to a few hundred US dollars. And now I know why. I still have it complete.....!!!!!) I made Super R-Type my bitch in 2 days of owning it. R-Type 3 became my bitch in a month yet it has checkpoints. And yeah I remember the R-type factory stage. I've at least one copy of every home iteration of R-type. Now if only R-type Leo had a home port. Shit! It's the only Type with Co-op style 2 player (alternating is not cool I, as I could just take turns with 1 player....). My brother mistakes every shmup he sees me playing as another R-Type game, even if its top down, (M.U.S.H.A., Raiden, even Grid Seeker) I'm still Gradius III's bitch. That plant monster is my current hurdle. Love the shirt.

    Jordan Jackson Thanks man I’m glad you enjoyed it. Got lots of that content here for you. I’ve only been doing this a few months but there’s a couple Shmup oriented channels I follow too that are great. I don’t know if I’ll always be 100% shmups all the time as there are other things and genres I love too. Can almost guarantee more ninja gaiden on nes at some point 😅 along with more tech videos I like doing, but overall It’s majority shmups for sure. I’ve got a ton of great pc engine shooters few have heard of that are awesome and I’m itching to show. I still have the Dreamcast to do a video for and you know Gunbird2 will be on it. That’s one of the hardest games on there. I still like that version for the same reason with Morrigan being playable 😃. The plant boss in G3 I find annoying too since it hampers your ability to dodge. It’s worse using the hack without any slowdown. It’s the one I can’t always predict. But I’m good at those types of games unlike RTypes which are always love hate for me. I prefer faster games like Gradius or Super Star Soldier but the Rtype games are just so cool I have to keep playing them. I have a few more of these top 5 hardest for other consoles too in my playlists you’ll probably dig too. So I hope you enjoy them!

    Jordan Jackson oh I forgot. Believe it or not my wife made that shirt lol. Along with a couple others I came up with. I actually threw it up on RedBubble and have a link in my description if you want one. Whenever I have random ideas for cool shirts that link is pretty much where I’ll throw them up. Originally I sold a bunch like 20+ and donated all the proceeds to a good cause. No reason not to leave it up for anyone that missed them.

    Thanks! Always love it when new people find my channel and resonate with my videos. UNSq is a good game and I enjoy it, so I tried not to be too harsh... just the very extended play time with no saving (unless you are on an emulator of course) is a long haul. Acrobat Mission is news to most it wasn't a common game and kind of why I wanted to highlight it. It's not amazing but there is something unique about it that I enjoyed, and it got pretty tough so it earned a spot. I have a lot of Top 5 hardest vids like this so you'll likely enjoy those too. It's pretty brutal but also fun making them.

  • @ShmupJunkie

    It really is very basic in terms of graphics and sound, but it has that older 8bit feel to it. But yeah the mechanics are very unique there really isn't much else like it. I think it goes for a lot of money OG so it's not likely worth it at those prices, but I played it emulated and it was fine. You'll see what I meant when I say it feels like you are getting bounced around like a pinball. It's a unique idea that if implemented again in a newer game, maybe into a better game visually, could be something really cool.

    The U.N. Squadron cave boss is definitely a difficulty spike. Ideally you want to not buy any jets until you have enough for the last two, but that means you have to challenge yourself playing with the starting plane for about half of the game, a bit of practice and it isn't too bad, you won't have to do the grinding mission even once this way so it's worth it.

  • @ShmupJunkie

    @ShmupJunkie

    That's kind of odd as I think that's what I did. I never upgraded until I could get the F20, then nothing else until the F200. And I still had to run over a dozen bombing missions. Maybe I just didn't rack up enough points during the levels. Outside of that though I really do think the game is rad. I love having the full load out. Would almost love to have a second harder loop where you get to keep your planes. That would make for some bitchin' gameplay.

    I remember fondly in my childhood watching my friend play UN Squadron. I never actually played because it was so tough. But the guy played through tons of missions only with the starting aircraft and a bare minimum of weapons. He always made it really far but it was a pretty insane tactic. He just tried to go for the last plane as soon as possible. Now, after 17 years I attempted to beat it myself, its seems impossible. I am glad you brought up the advice. Cheers.

  • @ShmupJunkie

    @ShmupJunkie

    I don't know how some people say it's an easier game, I always thought it was hard too. My tactic was just upgrading once to a better plane early as I hated that early starter, and then after that nothing until the end. But you pretty much need a plane with the right weapon to kill that next to final stage boss, as the basic planes have nothing. Having that final plane with all those loadouts was awesome though. It was a bummer to not get to use and enjoy it for much more than the final two stages.

    People often pass up the A10A because it's slow and has a max of level 3. That max is a nerf, the plane is a total beast. Give it a serious go, and you'll find it helpful until you need Gunpod. If you go point-blank with the Vulcan you'll have level 6 damage output I believe. Another trick is, if you know the desert in and out, max out your weapons on any purchased plane and go vulcan only, making sure to pick up the weapons up. The profit will be insane. Same goes for the battleship, but I use all my Napalm or Super Shells to survive. Edit: Forgot the powerup, how could I :P

My older brother didn’t play them for what ever reason, so I never knew how great this genre was. It was only until last year, I purchased Super R-Type for 5$, and it sparked my interest for shmups. Now, it’s one of my favorite genres. I LOVE R-Type 3. The atmosphere, music, difficulty. Although, I have only beat it on easy mode so far. Also, Axelay is a blast. For some reason, UN Squadron is kicking my ass! Haha. I just purchased Space Megaforce for a decent price, and it’s currently on its way from overseas. I can’t wait to play it. Anyways, it’s great to see and hear other people that love this genre as much as I do! Thanks for posting.

    Gradius 3 was no joke without slowdown that's for sure, but it's so much fun that way it's hard to go back. RType is brutal and not one I play as often as it's so memory heavy, but it's a great game. A lot of people list UNSq as their SNES favorite and I think a lot of it comes down to how involved the campaign is. As much as I gripe about the grinding, it lets you mess up and try again quite a bit while collecting and upgrading. I think it's more involving than a typical shooter and those elements and ability to get farther by grinding brings a lot of fond memories. Even though I didn't get to own a SNES as a kid I remember the many hours I spent at a friend's playing UNSq with them.

    I didn't know Acrobat Mission but as soon as I looked it up, I'm not surprised it is a UPL game! Many of their games had chunky sprites, a slightly weird look and unconventional gameplay elements. Despite the SNES not being renowned today for shoot'em ups, the other games you feature are among the most iconic of that era.

    Awesome show and glad to see SNES shoot 'em ups receiving some love! I'd like to watch more episodes based on shmups for the Snes and hear your opinion on games like Macross, Super Aleste, the 2nd and 3rd Parodius, Aero Fighters, Pop' n Twinbee, Super EDF (the Japanese version which has more difficulty options for beginners), Biometal (with the original soundtrack) or Flying Hero! By the way, Super R-Type received a SA-1 hack and plays like a dream! A SA-1 hack for Axelay is also on the works! What about a suggestions episode for SNES shmups that would really benefit from a SA-1 improvement?

  • @ShmupJunkie

    @ShmupJunkie

    Love hearing that and glad you dug this episode. You can absolutely bet I'll eventually be doing more SNES, more of my favorites versus hardest, as Macross and Axelay and Twinbee, among others are phenomenal games. It's gonna happen. But what will happen even sooner is an SA1 RTYPE hack episode, as I already have been wanting to do one since it was released and keep getting pulled away as February is a crazy month for shmups. Then I heard about Axelay, and knowing how quick Vitor works, it may already be done when I get to it. So I can do an SA1 episode with Super, Axelay, throw in some Gradius since I have the footage already, and maybe even Super GnG (although technically not an SA1 I think it's a fast rom, but fixes the slowdown quite a bit. Plus I love that game too. So that is absolutely on my radar and very soon!

    Really loving this channel. =) Comments - Gradius III without slowdown? Ouch. I have a hard enough time playing it with, haha. As far as R-Type III, it's a fantastic game, but I could never get into it because of all the environmental kills - screw stage 4, by the way, as I could never fully memorize the lava patterns. Couple that with the lethal walls and ground (something I'm glad Delta and Final did away with) and it gets so damn hard that I just didn't care for it. I bought UN Squadron a few years ago and it's a really fun game. I remember playing it as a kid on our original SNES. Good stuff.

But initially I just remember finding it tough as a kid and getting used to how it wanted you to play. Always thought it was a lot of fun too regardless of some repetition. The high points definitely outweighed the minor lows. Music is so good in that one.

    NES Gradius is how many of us got started and a really good entry point, so not surprising. There are many great console ports that felt fair in that way. Gradius III was awesome too, even the original without the patch. Watch out for SuperR, that game is pretty brutal, maybe moreso than III. Any Rtype takes a lot of memo, and Super makes you finish an entire level and boss with no checkpoints. RType III is just a fun game overall, so I'm curious what you'll think once you've played both.

    U.N. Squadron... My favorite game of all time. It taught me to be tough and patient as a child, and is very highly replayable. One trick you need to learn in U.N. Squadron is, on the Desert Carrier and Battleship Minks stages, max out your weapons purchases on any purchased plane, and use as few weapons as possible, collecting the weapons ups and winning. The profit is insane, and at most you'll play the bonus stage once at most! The difficulty is mostly fair until you play Gamer mode. I respect any player who beats that, and will call anybody who beats the Gamer mode without an Efreet a true gamer. So far, I've beaten Gamer mode with all three characters, an arcade stick, and beat Gamer Project 4 Fortress with every plane but the default fighter. Man was it hard with the F15, it has absolutely no room for error as it has no bombs and is fast! I forgot to mention I've seen a Gamer mode playthrough with only the default plane, what a mad lad! You can beat this game however you like, man.

    Oh yeah? My question is how can you finish the game with the default plane without having a weapon that can damage that air base stage boss? I always thought you needed some kind of upward shot. I'm going to have to see if I can find that playthrough, as I'm curious how the boss can be hurt without it aside from using a mega bomb. I agree UNSq is a killer game and aside from some grinding I always enjoyed the heck out of it too. And man that music... best on the SFC in terms of shmups IMO.

    Funny story about the umbrella section in parodius. A friend of mine got stuck there for a while and we found a way to beat it. Get a blue bell and use the bomb when the screen is full of enemies and you'll have done enough damage to get through with just the power ups you get when restarting the section.

    You need save states just to get through the Parodius games. The first Parodius game on the MSX is so hard I can't even get through the first level. Parodius 2, 3 and 4 are forgiving in comparison but even then you need to use Save States and DON'T GET HIT because once you do, it is extremely difficult to recover your power ups after the 2nd or 3rd stage. The Cat Ships, Cat Submarine and Cat Trains are really cute and my niece really loved looking at them when she watched me play through the game for her on my PSP. Sexy Parodius however is just something I can only play though alone, but the entertainment of the game itself is worth it and as usual, Safe States are required to finish through this game.

    About R-Type 3: The blue gooey force is the Cyclone Force (not the Shadow Force), the most powerful one of the 3 you can choose (even according to the specs during Force select). The Shadow Force is also pretty cool, allowing you to redirect your Force bullets by changing your position around the Force when detached.

    I realized after I finished it all up I was calling it by the wrong name 🙈 I hadn't played it in so long I just grabbed it as my favorite and my brain had the names mixed up. I haven't actually used the shadow force much aside from a quick try before I settled on the Cyclone way back then. I think I am worst at this RType out of all the ones I've played as I played it the least. Except for Super which I can't stomach the slowdown for long. If they ever released a rom hack for that like for Gradius I would be beyond stoked.

    At the time I brought Parodius on the SNES I knew nothing of it other than it was a shmup game so it was really cool to see NEW ZEALAND STORY style cuteness in a really good shooter. Normally I'd have been put off before The New Zealand Story of any cutesy graphics. Back in the day I wasn't too troubled by the first 3 leves but found it difficulty after level 4 back in the day but enjoyed it so much I returned many times but sadly never to complete it on SNES. And guess why.... those bloody umbrellas!!! ARGH! Now I know why I failed over and over. B***TARDS! R-Type III is still a gorgeous looking and sounding game and just as formidable as I remember, really great to see that again and some of the bosses I never got to due to time limitations with work etc. I mostly brought a game, hit a few times, and then never playes again, unless I made progress of course, in which case I would put more time in to it. Time was sadly short back then. I'm a huge UN Squadron fan, always have been, and completed it several times back inthe day. Definitely one of the games I miss the most on my SNES. That said though I totally understand your point of view in the video and respect it, it was far from a typical shmup and very RPG like in formula. I was never a fan of Acrobat Mission, the graphics just didn't do it for me. Switched me off, sadly. They look really basic, like Astro Wars, which I was never a fan of either. Can't put a finger on it as it is rare for me to feel that way about a game but this one I just lost interest, quick. Another excellent and informative video. Great job mate.

    King Lizzard's Game Lounge My dude. I reckon your comments are every bit as good as the videos 😁. I’m glad to know my struggle on that umbrella section may help you one day if you hit it up again. It’s a real PIA part. The fact you made it there says you’re good enough to finish the game. Getting there and that part is the worst of it. I know how many love UNSq and I really love much about it too. Aside from it throwing off the pacing for me and a good bit of slowdown in parts, it’s a really well done original game unique from the arcade. So I hope overall the video on it still made people want to play it that haven’t. You’re completely right on Acrobat. The older 8bit look and feel turned many off. It’s the unique way it plays that kind of won me over. It’s not spectacular but by the time I was done I was glad I’d played it. It’s rare you even heard of this game as many including myself have not. I found it simply searching for another brutal game to include 😅

    I'm not the biggest fan of Acrobat Mission and UN Squadron but sure there are great shmups for the system. But after playing a lot of MD and PCE shooters, it's really hard for me to get back to some SNES ones, not because the slowdowns but some of them lack something, like more frenetic action or something like that, there are exceptions of course but it just feels that way to me. D-Force is absolute crap tho.

    I know exactly what you mean as Shmups to me have always been about a fast pace. That's why I enjoyed this Gradius 3 hack so much it was like a breath of fresh air. After how fast so many pc engine shooters played (and why it was always my favorite console for them) it was hard to get as into others. But there were some great exceptions like Space Megaforce especially. No surprise since it was a Compile game.

    I’ve actually not played Vasara yet but I kept seeing that collection show up last year. You’re not alone actually on SuperR I know a good few that feel it’s harder too. And overall you may be right. I always found Stage 4 on three to be the hardest of either game, but then some other stages not hard at all. I’ll admit though I just dislike playing Super period because of the extreme slowdown. So I figured I’d at least showcase the better game since they are both pretty close in the ass kicking dept. The one benefit of poor checkpoints is at least you get a chance to power up again. In RType3 once I got stuck doing that part of Stage4 with no force pod it sucked donkey balls 😂. Gradius has that same problem.

    Yeah UN Squadron is definitely one of the toughest shmups, if not games, on SNES. It's funny because Contra 3 is a popular opinion on difficult SNES games, but I remember UN Squadron taking me about a month to beat on the easiest difficulty setting, while Contra 3 on Normal I was able to beat after a weekend and some change. One of the most infuriating things about UN Squadron's difficulty was all the ships that would come at you from behind without warning. Sometimes the level design would have missiles or enemies come from the top of the screen making you go downwards, only to be like "we knew you'd be in this part of the screen to dodge, so here's a surprise sneak attack"
