Hiking the Wainwrights - Season 1: Eastern Fells - Episode 2. Gowbarrow, The Lake District
Welcome back to the second walk in this first series of Hiking the Wainwrights. In this episode I walk up a little hill that was much loved by the great William Wordsworth himself: Gowbarrow Fell. And when you stand on that southern flank, looking out over Ullswater and the fells beyond it's very easy to see why he loved it so much.
Only one Wainwright 'bagged' in this one but by 'eck it's a belter! Now, to check for ticks!

At the risk of being totally maudlin, I just wanted to say thank you so much for making these wonderful videos. I recently lost my marriage to addiction, and while my former partner in life was very troubled, he loved wilderness adventures and the hills of England and Scotland like nothing else. He would happily clamber over rocks left and right, so keen to point out landmarks and gush about how beautiful it all was. I miss those good times with all my heart, so thank you for creating these sweet little windows back into that world. They’re a much-needed salve during a difficult time. ❤
Incredible views from such a low fell, a great walk that will suits my wife's knees... Thank you...
I think the new series and format is a winner. Really looking forward to watching the future episodes.

Walked Gowbarrow a few weeks ago , the views are amazing. Started walking the Wainwrights last year , now I have retired from work, this is number 18 for me . Your videos are amazing and an inspiration to anyone , they just make you want to get out in to the mountains , it has been a life changing event for me , something that most people can not connect with until you have been there and witness the moment , every summit I complete is so special to me .Will be back in the lakes next week , Keep up the good work , the work you do will stay with people for ever.

I did this walk last week and I'm with you on the path on the Ullswater side, superb. Funny thing was though that I was the only person going round that way and I must have passed 70+ people on a Monday. Reminded me when I first went up Sca Fell pike and there was 200+ up there, horrible. Like you I'm not so much a Wainwrighter but their are Fells to be hiked. Really enjoying the series and I'll be doing many more of these routes so a big thank you for sharing them.
Just found this beautiful video today (August 19, 2023) and I am so happy that I did. Grizzley Gaz suggested I take a look at your videos (I may have mentioned this already) and I've NOT been disappointed by any of them. Love the ones where Finn the Fell Walker accompanies you. Your wild camping videos are delightful too. When my ship comes in, I hope to purchase one of your excellent phots. The ones I have seen thus far are really worth having. I plan to display it proudly...
I found your channel a few weeks ago and have already done some of the walks ,the ordnance survey link make this really easy! Great to see you’ve started posting again ,very much appreciated by people & dogs in our house 👍

Spent many holidays in my teens and twenties in the Lake district - we used to buy mutton pies and walk up the nearest fell and find a good view (there isn't a bad one is there) and eat them - nothing like it! This programme brings it all back, thanks.
Oops! last comment lost. This is my kind of walk, views, wind lanes on the water, herdies and heather. Love it, thanks Glen.
Hi, Glenn. I cut my teeth learning to map read and use a compass on Gowbarrow in my early 20’s (66 now). On a day of limited visibility, I walked from Aira Force directly over the middle of the fell using compass map and dead reckoning. From a high point, I took an offset bearing towards the shooting lodge that was a standing ruin then. I ended ip about 50 to 100 metres north of the lodge on the path when it came into view. I was chuffed! A relatively safe fell to practice on. Your video brought back memories of that day and some better weather/view days on Gowbarrow. Thank you. Maurice Laidler.
Awesome and motivated to come up from the Garden of England to start walking the Fells starting at the same routes. I completed the C2C in August 2022 7 mornings in duration, i fell in love with the lakes during that time.
Lovely adventure. Nice to travel through you. Thank you for sharing. Blessings from New England, US
Another great vlog. I’m working my way through the Wainwright videos and loving them. Hello from Canada btw 🇨🇦
Wow mate just finished this route last week and wow awesome, the view down to ullswater with the rays of sun coming through were magical. Great video again mate thanks so much.🍻

I know you're only two walks into your Hiking the Wainwrights project but I'm loving the style of the videos. Gowbarrow, a cracking little fell where you get entry of bang for your bucks and yes, in my experience, it's always windy on the summit! 🙂👍

Such a beautiful video - the colours & the light were magical! I’ve added this walk to my wish list. Thank you so much for sharing, really enjoying this series 👌🏻
A brilliant idea to do this series, shows that you don’t need to do the ‘big ones’ to experience the Lakes and their beauty.
Brilliant video pal as always. Really love the route before the walk. Helps us beginners get to grips with marking routes and planning. You clearly have tons of knowledge and thanks for sharing!

I have just found the channel and really enjoyed this video! I have walked High Street the other side of Ullswater but you have opened my eyes to the hills the other side of the lake, thanks! as an older walker this is a new territory!
Great to watch this. Such pretty views. I’m gonna make this my first Lakes walk!
Cracking video marra 👍
Great timing, heading up to the Lakes tomorrow - always liked the look of Gowbarrow. Can’t wait to do this.
Absolutely class again, defo one of the best KZread channels 👏 👌 I often watch your videos for routes and directions as it's miles more fun than just looking through maps 🙂 Great video, looking forward to the next one ATB CHRIS 👍

Unfortunately, I don’t live in England so appreciate walking your trails vicariously through your videos. I know it’s not a photography vlog but would like to see more photos. You are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area.
Awesome, done most in that area but this one is new to me, great presentation as usual, it’s on my to do list after my Alps trip in my VW camper in a few weeks, thanks for sharing, Robbo 👍👍👍🏔

My ancestor was Lancelot Salkeld of Gowbarrow and he once called that area home (in the 1400’s), thank you for posting this I hope to one day visit my ancestral lands and see this beautiful area for myself! - Justine Salkeld
Love Gowbarrow/Aira. Spent a lot of time on and around there. Camped at the gate to Yew Crag about this time last year, amazing night sky and Timelapse of the sunrise over Ullswater, absolutely stunning. Also the missus absolutely loves the massive, massive tree as you walk up out of Aira, just where the path is closed at the moment. Keep them coming Glen, can’t wait to see what’s next.
I loved this, so beautifully documented in your filming! I'm at 180 on my wainwright tally and looking forward to finishing so I can start from scratch again and purposely tick them off. Gummers How is a stunning place. Looking forward to following you on your journey. You're an inspiration. 👍
Another brilliant video, thank you! We finished the Wainwrights six years ago but always enjoy re-doing them so it’s lovely to be able to watch on telly too ….just a little obsessed😂 Please can Finn make an appearance too from time to time ,we love her ♥️
Definitely adding that walk to the list! Aiming to walk around Ullswater next year so this seems like an ideal walk to add! Thanks!

Great video again. I did Gowbarrow back in May, beautiful walk up and yes…it was blowing like a b*****d on top 💨😃. The path under Aira Force seems to have been closed for ages, it was shut off last October when I was up there.
That's a cracking view, I bet its ace in autumn and winter.

Another brilliant vlog, Glenn. We walked Gowbarrow in torrential rain and saw nothing! We just wanted to get up and back to the car as quickly as possible, so went up the steep path from Aira Force, which was very slippery on the way down. Looking forward to doing your route on a fine day, so we can drink those views in. Thanks for sharing this. Looking forward to your next one now. Atb, Yvette and Mark

I love watching your vlogs around the Lake District! But I think this Walking the Wainwrights series is inspirational! I have currently done around 90 of the Fells so far, but recently I have been thinking about doing what you're doing and completing the Wainwrights from book one through to seven using his guidebooks (and a map) to navigate all routes on each fell, with a few good scrambling routes thrown in for good measure! I look forward to see your next adventure and what the seven series brings 👌
I did this walk today after watching this video twice in the past few days .. and yeah .. it's a massive Wow .. Just incredible views :)
As usual Glenn a beaut vid on a small but perfectly formed fell. This is shaping up to be a box set of loveliness keep em coming pal. Can’t wait for the next instalment 👏🏻👏🏻🥾⛰

I'm liking the 'season episode' approach. A season for each of Wainwright's guides perhaps? Makes me wonder which fell you're saving for the season finale 🤔 I like the music you used in this one. It was chilled, peaceful, but had an atmospheric quality. It adds so much to the video and helps tell the story of your hike. Keep it up sir 👍🏼

Stunning views. Not explored this side of the Lakes much and really should do. Reminds me of Loughrigg fell, with big views a bit like this. Was up wildcamping in Knoydart Scotland recently, that was definitely tickville. Anything that touched the grass they were on it!

This route looks great and looks like the one I’ll need when I start my Birkett round next year. Not keen on ticks though so probably a winter walk.
Totally agree with you about the OS Maps app, I've been using it over the last year to plan and navigate all my Wainwirght walks and it's been brilliant - I tend to plot the routes on the desktop version, then offline them to my phone beofre I leave the house

I was at Aira Force 20th Sept '22 and 2 of the 4 paths are open with just 2 closed due to the tree. Absolutely beautiful up there but, unfortunately I saw this video too late for that trip or would have headed up Gowbarrow too as had the time
