Duaffy's reaction to this scene is still the best on YT, IMO, given that a) she was one of the very few who genuinely didn't already know about it going into it, and b) since she watched Episodes I & II prior to Episodes IV & V, and, thus, already had a frame of reference as to who Anakin was, it gives her reaction to the scene another layer, in that it's not merely *_"OMG, Vader is Luke's father!"_* (as it was for most of us), but rather *_"OMG, Vader is actually Anakin!"_* Screw release order; it spoils the entire prequel trilogy.

In my high school years I decided to watch all 6 movies in chronological order. First the prequels and then the originals. The biggest surprise for me after the third prequel was finding out Luke and Leia were twins.

There's a famous bit of lore that George Lucas took advantage of the fact the line was going to be overdubbed to hide it. He knew it would change everything, so to avoid spoilers leaking out, he handed out an altered script. As far as everyone on set knew, the big reveal was "Obi Wan killed your father." Mark Hamill was told privately, so that he could react to what David Prowse (Vader's physical actor) was doing rather than what he was saying. Mark tells a funny story about Harrison Ford's reaction at the premier. When the line dropped, Harrison looked over at him "Hey kid, they didn't F__ ing tell ME that."

I was 12. I was not sure what to believe, noone was. Was it a lie to get Luke to go Dark Side? Was Vader actually planning to betray the Emperor? Had Obi Wan and Yoda LIED to Luke? Everyone debated this for the next 3 years intently. And then we found out when Return came out. At the time I thought that this was the greatest reveal ever from great story writing. Now I know better. On a side note I think that the woman Leia mentions remembering as her mother was Bail's wife or her nanny who died before Leia became a teenager and not actually her remembering Padme. I'm sure others have thought of this, too.

Star Wars was also not niche sci-fi - EVERYONE saw it. If you were a child and alive between '77 and '84 you saw the original trilogy in a theater. Then for many years, they were run on broadcast TV at least once a year, like The Wizard of Oz. But people who have grown up in the era of VHS/DVD/streaming don't know what it's like to live in a world where most people had only a handful of channels and you couldn't watch whatever you wanted whenever you felt like it, so their knowledge of the classic or blockbuster films of yesteryear has many more gaps in it than Gen-Xers and older Milliennials.

Machete order is best and most impactful... 4 and 5 establish who Vader is... then you go back to find out why and how Anakin fell to the dark side... and then you watch 6 to see Anakin's redemption, and you truly understand what the title "Return of the Jedi" means. It's Anakin's return. - PS - In episode III, the machete order gives a HUGE impact as the viewer sees the big reveal at the end... that Padme is carrying twins. The moment she names the girl, it's just as big a moment as the Vader reveal in ep.5. Far better than the reveal of Leia's identity in ep.6 where it just feels a bit trite.

No matter how old or young you are, or if you’re not even a Star Ware fan or even watched this movie, you must have been living under a rock to not know where that line was from. I guess nobody ever questioned that line whenever it was said in other shows, movies, and Father’s Day cards. Don’t y’all question anything? It’s the significance of that line means nothing if you don’t know where it’s from. That’s like not knowing “I’ll be back” from The Terminator. It’s like twentysomethings think the world began when they were born. Nothing existed before their birth year. lol. And hell, if you saw the prequels or even the crappy Disney sequels, then you should know that Darth Vader is Luke’s dad. Don’t any of y’all watch the other Star Wars Disney+ shows or the other movies or Clone Wars or anything? True, you could be watching ESB for the first time and have never seen the other movies, but still. It’s all common knowledge by this point. Its so hard telling someone to watch star wars and then they ask "in what order should i watch for the first time?" Like the arguments for both chronological and theatrical release are good. On one side, watching the prequels first greatly enhances the depth of the characters (example, knowing chewbacca is a wanted fugitive for helping yoda escape kashyyyk and thats why he hangs with han solo, or seeing how similar leia is to her mother even without knowing her) and their relationships with each other. At the same time it makes many moments much more impactful in terms of storytelling (sc38 comes to mind, as well as luke removing vader's mask) On the other hand, you definitely have to acknowledge that it completely kills the shock factor of some key reveals, like luke and leia being siblings, or vader being luke's father. Its a very hard question to answer for me, but as a lore nerd in general, i need to know about the context of the world before i get invested, so someone like me would appreciate the chronological order more (1>6), but someone who doesnt constantly overthink and enjoys the surprise element would probably rather watch in theatrical release order (4-5-6-1-2-3)

You had a fantastic idea to show these iconic scenes specifically, I think it is brilliant. ❤ I enjoy them very much, but I do have a suggestion to cut down on the repetition. If you could group 2-3 reactions together on a split screen, you could show the movie scene less often. I watch music video compilations from WonderMommaOG, and that’s how she does it if you want an example. I have no experience with editing, so this may be much more difficult and time-consuming than doing it the way you do, but I think it would be more enjoyable to watch. Just a suggestion 😁
