TOP SPEED RUN - Is A Pricey Stainless Steel Propeller on my Sea Ray 175 Worth It? - Hobby Mechanic

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Looking to increase the top speed of my Sea Ray 175 w/ Mercury 125 outboard by upgrading to a stainless steel propeller. The removal and install of the new prop seems relatively easy from what I've seen online.
The highest top speed I've achieved during perfect conditions was about 38 miles per hour and that was only once or twice over the last couple of years. My outboard came stock with an aluminum propeller with a 17 degree pitch. I'm hoping to add more speed by upgrading to a stainless steel prop with a 19 degree pitch.
The stainless steel is a harder metal so the prop can be made thinner thus allowing it to cut through the water more efficiently. Or so I've read... Watch the video and find out!

Great video with your experience on props. I have a 1996 SeaRay 175BRXL with a 4.3L 190 Mercruiser, I just replaced the original Tach and instruments, they look exactly the same as yours. They all work, I changed them because I updated to a GPS based Speedometer and I wanted all the gauges to match. If you are interested in the Tach or any of the other gauges, just respond here and we'll figure out how to connect. I love your boat, there is just something about an outboard that I enjoy!!!

I really enjoy the video especially every time your son comes to the screen he put his thumbs up😅. I really encourage you to fix the tachometer because your engine has a range of RPMs to work with. Lets say your engine works 5200 - 5700rpms at WOT, you should be close to that top rpms ( 5500-5600 maybe) to get the most out of you OB

Generally, a change from aluminum to ss will generally require 2" LESS pitch. You are likely to not have enough RPMs to develop full horsepower. You should look for a 15 inch stainless prop. More pitch / less Engine RPM and corresponding less horsepower.

What diameter prop are you running? I have a 1997 175 BROB, I'm running a Honda BF130 that's about 100# heavier motor with a 13.25x15p I get 6000+ rpm with moderate load(2adults, 55qt cooler, 2 big dogs, and misc) and get 40-41mph depending on weather. I've also ran a 13x17p with same load and get 5700-5800 rpm running 43-44mph weather permitting? Man, I wish your boat was nearby to take measurements on some things that are missing from mine so I can finish my interior and seating up. Nice boat by the way. Keep on cruising!

125merc plus a 21 pitch prop let me go 45mph with aluminum black max.

Do you get a lot of cavitation at the lower RPM’s? I’d love to get some more MPH out of her but the 19P I added introduced a tiny bit of cavitation at lower RPM’s so I figured that was all I could get out of it.

Now go an raise the motor up 2 holes on your bracket and then drill the prop for vents to get a super holeshot from venting and allow you to cruise a touch slower. the venting will not effect top end, but raising by 2 holes will give you another 2mph. check your rpm

I think you’re right about the raising the motor. I’ve been finding folks online that are getting more speed out of similar setups. I definitely have more room to raise it so I’ll give it a shot towards the end of the season.

If your tacho is correct (5:02) you're overpropped. Lugging the engine, bad news. Go down in pitch.

Tach is dead unfortunately. I have to pitch it by ear/feel.

I see a lot of explanations of why SS is better than Al. as far as performance, saying Al props flex with not accurate pitch during high rpm.....the ONE thing aluminum doesn't do reliably is flex.....it breaks. Aluminum props aren't engineered as well......it's why they are less-expensive (not cheap..) as well as the casting material. Both go through the same casting process....(lost wax..) If you can find a deal on eBay for a 4 blade SS, buy it!! Search Solas props first

alloy props DO flex a LOT , yes they can crack , but when you look at alloy prop it can be exactly the same pitch and worked so everything is the same as a stainless it will flex and be a touch slower. its why you normal see a 150 -200 rpm drop when switching from a alloy to stainless.... and the composite props flex even more.. a prop that flexes will eventually crack, thats what metal does when it flexes.. stainless is the best material for a propeller at the moment without going nuts and wanting a titanium prop specially made... best thing for any prop to gain performance is to balance it, it also saves your drive line bearings with a nice balanced prop. new props 90% of the time are way out of balance.
