New Push 3 User here (first device like this ever) - is that course done you spoke about here? Really interested, because you the way you teach here is exactly what I search for! I’m a classical violinist (professional) and therefore I need this more theory-based approach to learning my new instrument (being the push 3 😉)

The problem is that it goes beyond just learning chromatic mode in Push, there is also music theory and ear training and all the related areas that take _years_ to master.

On a more constructive note, do you have suggestions on whether to use the layout tuned in 3rds or 4ths? I have noticed that some drum machines have 3x4 grid that works with 3rds tuning better, but i think 4ths tuning is a little easier when moving to from guitar.

Nice vid. I don't have any piano/guitar playing background, so I lean on In-Key mode heavily. This video helps me want to explore chromatic mode more. Future vids I would like would be discussion on shapes in chromatic mode, how they change or persist through the scale, and that type of thing.

love it.youre a great teacher . does push 2 display that black and white keys in the LCD screen?that shows what keys and chords are being played

These are great reasons for using the 64 pad layout in chromatic mode. I sometimes use in key mode to play melodies over my chords because I can play freely and very fast runs then in chromatic mode. I could do a video explaining this ideas?

Also, if you can mention what patches, synths, your using would be much appreciated. Thanks again for the content.

I never noticed how much better and more sophisticated/elegant music sounds being played in chromatic mode vs moving the same triangle pattern around in inkey mode. Like the difference is night and day. You've officially convinced me. I'd gone through your previous video from year ago on 43 chord shapes on the push, but is there another resource you can point to that shows all the shapes to play on Push in chromatic mode?

Ableton has some great starter videos on playing push in chromatic mode. I'm working on an in depth course that will be ready in a couple months :)

Hey Jamie, thanks for the upload. Do you have any particular method for learning the chord shapes (and speed/fluency) in chromatic? My push is coming this week, and I kind of want to just go straight to chromatic and learn those shapes instead of starting with in key. No experience with keys, but am a guitarist and know how chords are put together

Hi Jamie!! I'm tired of the classic piano notes. I've been playing piano for many years and I just hate to memorize chords. I play the guitar and everything is just SYMETRICAL. I love that. However, I love piano sound and the 2-hands thing, but I hate the piano notes order, I want to go chromatic. I've heard about isomorphic pianos, and ended here. I really want to quit the old piano and start playing around something chromatic like this. I'll definitely look into this, thanks!!

This looks harder than learning to play the piano (which I just started doing)! :P

I have to stop playing keys 🎹 and work more on the Push2. I too have a Force which now is forcing me (no pun) to learn the fingering. Between watching your video and someone playing Teen Town I made a decision I must learn the Push as an instrument. That patch by the way sounded like EP-1 with chorus. Nice selection.

What's the trick for navigating a chord progression. Like if someone says play an A-E-F#mi7-D, do you recognize where the root of these notes are by the pattern of chromatic mode like you do on a piano. I mean on piano you always know where all the F# notes sit. Is it the same in chromatic mode. Then you do the mi7 shape? I'm new to push and trying to figure out if it's worth learning.

do i need to learn piano first? i know some basic music theory, but can't play any instrument. i've been trying to produce music.

How did you move the piano keys to the display, or is it post-processing editing?

So that leaves another question, why not Tonnetz mode? Or does Push not have a Tonnetz mode. I come from Akai Force.

Same thing applies. From what I understand, tonnetz mode moves in fifths from left to right and thirds from bottom to top. This omits chromatic notes, so the concepts I discuss here still apply.

So how canyou play in chromatic mode if you dont know the theory? I though in key mode was to ensure you are playing into the key

Do you use a foot pedal with your push?

Love your vids man. Always. But I wonder, as a pianist and finger-drummer, once the theory and chord formulas are known, wouldn’t it be easier just doing all of this on a keyboard? The visuals of chord shapes seem more logical on a piano and less so on grid controllers. That said, your grid skills are great, man. 😊

Buddy I feel for you. I saw a trained pianist saying they didn't get it either. The best advice i can give you is learn about bass guitar. The push in chromatic mode in 4ths is the same as looking at a bass fretboard. This is slso tuned in 4ths. Any scale or chord shapes for bass will work on Push in chromatic mode tuned by 4ths. You'll have the added advantage of of understanding a bass as well.

Dude, if we're to learn to play in chromatic mode, we might as well just learn to play the piano... Key mode is to get most of the way there fast (and to have a safety net). You cannot have a proper chromatic grid with 8 notes per row anyway, as having to map 12 notes per octave in that, means the chord/scale shapes and patterns are not consistent (like they'd be on a bass/guitar etc).

*shrug* I prefer chromatic mode as the default, but I think you should use whatever works in context. I've seen performers use specific keys that work to make playing parts easier in certain songs. Make sure you're comfortable in chromatic but the other settings aren't trash at all.

omg no one plays push enough to call out this crutch, and most people who don't play chromatic don't know music theory enough to realize why it holds them back

I mean jazz is all about those tasty chromatic notes so this was never an option for me.

or just get a launchpad and play with one finger
