Top Ranch Hand Competition - 2019 WRRA World Championship Finals 3rd Go

Спорт

Individual working ranch cowgirls compete in this event to determine the Top Ranch Hand for 2019. The clock starts when a cowgirl opens a gate while mounted then closes the gate with cooperation from her horse. There is a short ride to a wheelbarrow at the side of the arena where the cowgirl dismounts, picks up two 40-pound bags of feed and carries both to another wheelbarrow in the middle of the arena. She must then remount her horse and pen a loose steer in the arena. She must then drive the steer out of the pen and head rope it using a dally to stop the steer and face the horse. The rope may be dropped and she rides back to the center wheelbarrow, dismounts, and carries the two bags back to the first one. The clock stops when she remounts her horse. #WRRA #Cowgirls #RanchRodeo #Rodeo

This was my first time seeing this type of ranch rodeo event and I thought it was fun to watch! Opening and closing gates while mounted and carrying bags of feed are part of daily chores on most working ranches whereas the penning and roping skills are not used quite as often. Some of the horses were top-notch hands themselves! What are your thoughts about this event?

I think some of the horses need more training....they should not need to be led, they should follow with voice commands under those circumstances. Interesting concept though

I have several videos of ranch hands working on the LX Ranch north of Amarillo. The ranch has been in operation since the 1800s. You can use the #LXRanch hashtag to find some of them listed or you can just watch this early video to get an idea of some of the other chores on working ranches. - kzread.info/dash/bejne/lKWdo8-ggNDMcaQ.html

This is amazing! These women are super inspiring. I tried to look up a men's version of this, and could not find anything. What is up with that? These women are lifting, roping, cutting, and lifting again. All I see in men's competition is roping. Is there anything like this for men?

The WRCA has a top hand award for all of their rodeos but it is based on their performance in all the events. I think a top hand event would be good for their world championship competition.

I am so glad you have pointed that out ma'am! I have commented on a number of videos about that lack of training and hope to drill down into how to train horses to do just that with the help of a young local trainer. Cowboy and cowgirl boots were not made for chasing after our mounts!
