Something that, to me, is overlooked is the interaction between Phoenix and Bob. He's sitting in the bar in full view of all the other pilots and is barely given any approval by the other cadets. He is even ostracized a bit. When Phoenix finds out he's her backseater, she quickly includes him in the discussion and almost madates that he play pool with them. She immediatly knows that they are now a team and she is stepping up for him. She also realizes that her chances of success are directly affected by Bob, so she makes it her mission to befriend him or at the very least include him. You can tell when she says to rack the billiard balls that he gets a surprised look that he is being included and accepted despite him not having the tough guy demeanor everyone else there exudes. Its a small 10 second part of a scene, but it always stuck with me.

nice observation! Though in real life, bob wouldn't be ignored I feel cause I've seen those characters around (not in af but whenever I'm at aeroshows). In movies you can judge who's tough and who's not but in real life, you could never judge a book by it's cover.

I love how instead of Phoenix ignoring bob and just being a jerk to him, she includes him. You can see when she tells him to play 9 ball, he looks so happy. Phoenix and bob forever. ♾️♾️

Love the fact David Bowie Lets Dance starts playing in the background just as Penny is introduced @ 00:48 considering him and Jennifer Connelly filmed Labyrinth together. Nice little touch

I remember watching this for the first time in the cinema and as soon as i heard Maverick say "Penny?" I instantly said in my head "The admiral's daughter" and nodded in realisation of who she is. And I'm pretty sure everyone else i was with did the same thing.

Should I feel guilty that I didn't see this movie in the theater,I watched it when it came on Netflix 📀 service.

Crazy to think of Maverick surviving every conflict between 1986 and 2022.

People think about this: Was Pete's credit card really declined? Or just Penny making up an excuse throwing him out of her bar?

Jennifer Connelly is one of the most stunning women I've seen on film EVER!!! WORLD. CLASS. BEAUTY.

Hangman was that one hot, arrogant, talented jerk with a sense of humor, and a hidden heart of gold, whom everybody loves at the end. 😂 and it was obvious from the start. Also, I laughed so hard when Hangman played 'Slow Ride' at the bar when arguing with Rooster and telling Rooster he sucks because he is too slow. 🤣that was hilarious!

I love Hangman saying "mission is a mission, they don't confront me". Though his arrogance, he was the first to request permission to fly for air cover after Maverick was shot down, and despite his personal dispute with Rooster, he was the one who saved Mav and Rooster at the end. He really lived up to his words.

I watched this movie 8 times while traveling and I don’t regret it at all 😂

This is the 3rd time I've seen this scene. Picked up a couple of things I missed before. Damn good movie. Obvious action, but also some nuances from good writing too.

i think that’s close to the most unimaginative bit of dialogue of any movie. geez

It's fun seeing Glenn do that triple dart, I mean, depending on the score doesn't mean much cause the doubles. He did BlueAngles movie after this (not sure if directed, but I think so), glad they did his character well.

This cuts right before the most important part of this scene, which is when she sees him staring through the window, ponderative and penitent.

So, thinking about Mav and his relationship with Penny a bit.... Canonically, Mav was around 23-26 during Top Gun, based on his dad's service during Vietnam, and Cruise himself in real life was 24. Connelly is 8 years his junior. No wonder the admiral went ballistic with Mav for making a pass on her. A 24 year old pilot under your command fooling around with your 16 year old daughter.

Everyone wonders how she was able to afford a bar, a boat, and an expensive car in Southern Califonia but firget that she was an aerospace engineering analyst and a contractor with the government during the cold war. Based on her security clearance and experience she probably a truck load of money in that 20-25years

I agree. My only thought was that he assumed Mav was retired and just wearing his old stuff but even then, you don't physically throw a CAPT, even a retired one, out of a building as an officer yourself, especially while wearing your uniform.

If a person looks back to " Top Gun"... Maverick went ballistic with Penny when the F-14 Tomcat was the main carrier plane. The F-18 Hornet or Super Hornet weren't in the arsenal yet. 🤔

A lot people do not know this but the Miramar bar there was a fire in the kitchen.

i've been in the miliatary for 20 years. Served in joint teams and I have never heard anyone ever talk like this in real life

The only thing missing from this is the back story between pheonix rooster and hangman like what happened between them that led to this rivalry between rooster and hangman?

There are movies where the characters are just naturally cool, like a Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry and then there are movies like this where they try way too hard to make the characters look cool.

Well it's possible. I try not to talk about her looks. Just about anyone who knows who Jennifer Connelly is, knows all about her looks. But, well, in her late teens and early to mid twenties, Jennifer was THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WOMAN who has ever been on as movie screen (Some Girls, The Hot Spot, Career Opportunities, The Rocketeer, Heart of Justice, Higher Learning, Mulholland Falls) so probably not no. . And regarding the person who said she was once "a ten", yes, she hit her peak in the movie "Mulholland Falls": in 1995 when she was the real live version of the often talked about, "Perfect 10". But today Jennifer is still a 9. And she is a good actress, too, as her awards attest to.

You always make it sound like it just happened and every time it’s old news.

Guess I'm getting old, but this is the only part of the movie I enjoyed ... the aging Pete, his relationship with Penny. All that hot-jock fighter pilots stuff with the other characters just didn't do it. And there was so much pre-release stuff about how they filmed it, that I never bought the notion that these stereotypical characters were actually flying the planes.

It really can't be a coincidence Bowie is playing in the background.
