1. Power Distribution is Critical
a. Placement
b. Protection
- Types
- Sized properly
c. Grounding
2. Labeling Matters
a. Clear and legible
b. Logical labeling, Make sure it makes sense, or matches the prints
c. Allows for easy identification of wires in the panel
3. Temperature is Important
a. Ambient temp of panel location
- Dictates enclosure types and hardware within the panel
- May need to include a heater if the panel is located in potentially freezing environments
b. Temperature generated within the panel
- Dictates ventilation requirements of the panel
- May need fan and exhaust
- May need AC unit if enough heat is generated
- Improper ventilation can lead to premature hardware failure.
4. Layout can make all the difference
a. Good layout can make the difference between a panel that is clean and easy to service or troubleshoot, as well as make hardware function and last longer.
b. Proper spacing for hardware is important to ensure proper ventilation
c. Allowing enough space for wire ducting throughout the panel will allow for very clean and organized wiring.
d. Placing hardware strategically throughout the panel will allow for wiring in the field to go much more smoothing and also giving you a much cleaner finished product
Example: IO on the bottom (or wherever the IO will enter the panel, Power on the top, Communication and PLC in the center.
5. Wire Color

love you videos. Can you provide the NEC section that states the colors for dc power is blue and white and ac power is black, white and green? That would be a big help thank you.

No DC negative connected to the chassis ground in my panels. DC to DC converter and separate circuit for control components- or I am out of here. I can connect control components ground to the separate earthing field, on the opposite side of the property from the main service. Sandy soil and customers who doesn’t give a rats behind if they’ll loose the neutral conductor completely ( because they don’t need it to run 3 phase equipment) - make regular grounding circuit noisier than a space shuttle on take off!

Can this video material introduced in a written format such as power point? Also, Can anyone suggest a book that would cover all or most aspects of industrial panel building? Thank You.

DC negative should never be connected to earth ground, unless you really like replacing your DC powered equipment often. [It's not a car.] There's a earth ground terminal on every din rail mounted DC power supply I've ever bought and it's separate for a reason. [If the PS designer wanted negative connected to earth ground he would have done it internally.]
