    You punch the holes to reduce the thatch layer. You fill the holes with fresh sand to help with drainage. There are lots of other advantages to it, such as reducing anaerobic bacteria. We do it twice a year. Some courses with all the money do it more. Some also put sand down frequently, as often as every other week.

    Top dressing can be done to home lawns as well, provided you have bermuda, zoysia, or perennial rye grass. The lawn must be first scalped and I suggest a power raking. Then a 1/4 -1/2 inch top dressing of sand. River sand being the most ideal, but silica sand will suffice. Push it around with brooms and work it into the lawn. Then fertilize with a heavy nitrogen fertilzer and you will have a beatuiful lawn. No amount of aeration or compost top dressings will level a lawn or decompose thatch.

    Typically you dont see fertilizer mixed in with the sand because the sand/fert will have to mixed perfectly and applied at a very consist rate in order to achieve a uniform growth and appearance. Golf Course Superintendents like to a pre application of fertilizer about 2-3 days before the aeration. Some prefer to do it after.

    I believe the course maintenance crew Aerifed the greens recently, they use this sand to fill in the small holes which were quite visible to the left side of the Cushman. They Aerifed the greens because it promotes growth, due to the greens being trampled and compressed. They fill it in with sand so the grass can expand and so the green becomes "softer" and better to play on.

    aerifying promotes root growth and the removal of thatch as well as keeping the make up of the green sand( which will keep them firm) Some Superintendents like to apply an extremely light dusting of sand on their green every two weeks to them firm and the least amount of thatch. Following the aeration process a granular fertilizer or liquid application is typically applied.

    The sand is to provide a cover to the root system so that only the blades of grass are above the sand. Next, the sand will be worked in with a drag mat or the like. It produces a more even and "pretty" surface.

    @b15sentra2k11 жыл бұрын

    I do. Its a green that has been aerated. The soil cores have been removed. This is a sand top dressing that get spread over the green. Next they will brush it into the holes to fill them back up so the green is some what smooth again. (If you look closely you can see the small holes in the green as he drives across it. Once they are done working loose sand back into the aerated holes they will water the green to help work the sand down into the ground a bit more.

    Golf greens are aerated periodically. Thumb-sized plugs of turf are pulled from the greens to allow relief from soil compaction, and to allow air, water and nutrients into the root zone. Topdressing sand is then applied and drug in with brushes or a drag mat to fill in the holes. Topdressing may also be applied without aerating, just to smooth out a green. That's a brief answer to what is topdressing.

    By looking at the holes in the field, they just vertidrained the grass. This basically means they made vertical holes with a machine. Now they add sand to fill up the holes. (the sand will flow into the holes when it rains) So the topsoil will let water flow through more easily.

    Top dressing is sand, and sometimes mixed with soil. It is to improve the lawn (or golf course) to handle more wear and tear. By adding sand now and then you will increase the porosity of the soil. When lawn is used a lot the soil will not be as compacted and the roots will still get air and water. It will also drain better. Downside is that you need more irregation and nutrition.

    step 1: Aerate (punch holes) step 2: Top Dress (drop sand) step 3: Drag carpet (drag a carpet behind a light vehicle to get the sand in the ground) Also, our goal as greens keepers is to never let you play through a hole that is still being worked on, so with a good crew, you'll never know they were even there, other than the fact that the course is maintained.
