Lifting weights with osteoarthritis will help you get stronger joints. In order to lift weights correctly, you have to use the right amount of weight so you aren't flaring up your joint pain. Start gradually and increase weight as able. If you do experience pain during any of these exercises, listen to your body and modify appropriately. These exercises are presented by people that have varying degrees of osteoarthritis. It is important to complete full body exercises even if you have knee osteoarthritis or hip osteoarthritis because a strong upper body will help prevent your arthritis pain from spreading.

Super. Thank you. I just completed this workout and no pain to my arthritic hip. Up till now I’ve not attempted weights but these exercises are ideal for me as I recognise the importance of maintaining bone and muscle strength.

Great exercises. I'm actually able to do them. I do wish you would of said how many reps and the dumb bell weight.

It’s really hard to say reps and weights that would apply to everyone. For strength moves you’ll want to be around 8-12 reps and a weight threats challenging enough that by the last 1-2 reps it starts to feel pretty difficult. Hope that helps!

What would be your suggestion for holding a dumbbell type weight when the action and weight of gripping a dumbbell aggravates osteoarthritis in finger joints? Are wrist weights or glove weights OK, or are there other occupational therapy solutions?

Hi Alyssa, great work! Love your videos. I am a 41 year old male, and have some experience with weight training. I was diagnosed with shoulder arthritis recently and then I stopped training. Would you be able to tell me how much weight is safe to lift if I want to start working out again?

Hi! Great video! I'm a 32-year-old male with spinal arthritis and joint deterioration (a lot of it due to being born prematurely and body not developing as it should). I'm trying to lose weight, and better my diet. Would you say these would be more ideal for helping with the joints and so on, or more prone to weight loss, or both? If not, do you have any that are good for weight loss exercises with arthritis, and how many sets of each exercise? Thanks for any help! :)

The are dumbbells you can order online. Soup cans can also be an option depending on what's around your house and where your strength is at.

Maybe use a belt or exercise band to wrap around the weight and your hand?

Use power bands, they are gentler. Try cutting plants out of your diet too, that can help alot. I have RA, lately the flares are so bad, the hands are the worst.
