mr roar104 Quite a few of the subclasses are unbalanced with some being ridiculously overpowered or completely underwhelming. Paladin subclasses are pretty good in comparison to say monk subclasses which rearrange the furniture of usefulness rather than give interesting playstyles to the monk, with the exception of Way of Astral Self which turns you into a stand user.

The Protection Cleric's Blessed Healer ability isn't based off the Life Cleric's 1st level ability, it's just a straight up rip off of the Life Cleric's level 6 ability. They're the exact same.

I assume one of the biggest reasons Treachery Paladin didn't make it is that most people probably read it and assume "This is just an anti-party subclass that encourages backstabbing" when in reality Treachery Paladin makes the perfect "Undercover Cop" type character.

I have played as a Brute Fighter and a Way of Tranquility Monk, and I thoroughly enjoyed both. I loved the feeling of the Brute as the brother of the Champion who thought the Champion wasn't swole enough and decided to one-up him. Tranquility was my first D&D character, and I was digging the idea of monastic warrior who preferred to use words over weapons.

I will now do something i rarely do: give my honest opinion/feedback on the internet. (well knowing that this kind of comment is rarely read or even worded these days) I do really like the content you provide and I can tell a lot of thought went into it. That said, when i got hooked on DnD a some 5 or 6 years ago i started to consume DnD related videos on a daily basis. At some point I stumbled upon your's and to be honest, i did not really like the first couple of videos i saw. Back then i couldn't exactly tell why. I had the impression you we're just not "trying" enough to be on the internet, sort of "lack of attitude". That said, your videos always were interesting! But recently I started to see your content in a different perspective. Everything you say was thought about extensively. All of your content is your opinion, and this attitude is not a deficit, i see it as a very refreshing take on "it's my opinion and i accept the fact that other people's opinions will differ"-style. It seems honest and straight to the face. In this modern time where everybody on the internet puts on a "public face" you stay true to yourself. And i gotta say, understanding this makes every video i watch, even those i didn't like back then, way more enjoyable. Keep up the great work and thank you for countless hours of entertainment! (please note that english is not my native language, i tried my best to express my thoughts)

The good news for this list is that several members of the WotC design team have stated outright that they never totally dismiss a failed UA, feature design, or design concept. So, any of these subclasses could return in the future slightly (or heavily) tweaked. However, I can tell you right now that the Oath of Treachery, Protection Domain, and Theurgy wizard would be heavily modified as feedback has taught the design team that players in general greatly dislike any features that are too similar to, or are outright copied from, other sub/classes.

I think the shooting class is essentially a crossbow master and sharpshooter feat in a subclass. Fighters get so many ASIs that picking them up if you want to be an archer or hand crossbow user it isn’t too hard- particularly as variant human. They allow you to do most of what the subclass does whilst gaining another subclass’ benefits and also at a significantly earlier level

Honestly one of my favorite UA's is the Wildfire Druid. So little of the base druid deals with the death and rebirth side of wildfires, it makes a really cool character concept. I can see why a lot of these didn’t make it in. Treachery Paladin simply doesn’t play nice with others. I can see a player constantly wanting to backstab their teammates and using the excuse “it’s what my character would do!” Sharpshooter is just a generic archer. Which you can already make with the other subclasses. Protection is great thematically but a terrible plagiarist. Seriously, so much wasted potential Stone Sorcerer tries to make a class with a d6 hit die into a semi-tank. Which doesn’t work. Theurgist is cool, but gives Wizard healing spells, which is a design philosophy no-no, and even more spell options. In addition it just makes more sense to multi class to me. Twilight Druid and Phoenix Sorcerer make a lot of sense though. I would love to see those.

Not a player yet, but I think those subclasses can be tweaked. Yet the treachery paladin would work in an evil campaign. It literally seems like the paladin would worship an evil god or a trickster god. Yet maybe these subclasses will be published once Critical role starts campaign 3. Or if another D&D stream gains in massive popularity.

I'd argue that the Stone Sorcerer is fine defensively; the only thing that doesn't exactly work is the smite spells. They get one extra hitpoint per level giving them monk and rogue amounts of martial HP and with AC= 13+Con+Shield (18 AC at level 1), they already have better AC then a monk and rogue for around level 1 to 8. Since they can ignore Dex more and focus Con, they'll have more HP than most monks and rogues. Also, you can probably learn one extra spell since you won't be needing Mage Armor.

I'm currently playing one of a pair of shadar-kai twins who have devoted themselves to the Raven Queen. We decided we wanted them to feel very yin and yang to each other, where they have very similar end goals, but wildly different approaches. My bestie went Grave Domain Cleric, and I went Theurgy Wizard and Life Domain (as the Raven Queen's two domains are life and grave). The contrasts between the two characters are amazing and we find we don't really step on each other's toes. I have healing stuff when she needs a backup healer, we're the ultimate buff/debuff team, and even our stylistic choices as far as how and when we heal people is wildly different. The Theurgy wizard isn't particularly *strong* because of the limitation on when you get non-domain spells, and in some ways is kinda weak compared to a typical cleric, due to getting almost every ability 4-5 levels later than a cleric of that domain would. The trade-off is that you *eventually* get the full cleric spell list and you get the capstone ability for that domain a couple levels earlier. I don't see an issue in the balance, and if anything I think Theurgy supports the idea of more strictly supportive wizards than other wizard schools do.

I've been playing a Lore Master Wizard for a long time. I really like having the expertise in Arcana but it's definitely been too strong. It was getting kind of boring until I got an item that encouraged me to peruse an ice theme. The funny thing is I actually asked him when Xanathar's Guide came out if I should swap to War Mage and he told me he'd prefer me to stay as what I was.

@@trappyboi8678 I mean to be fair the sorcerer class is pretty useless anyway and only truly *good* for dips. I love my sorcerer, but I'll be the first person to admit that it's the weakest full caster and really needs to be revised like the Ranger was. It's got all the thematics I love and the mechanics are kind of awful and make it the worst full caster in the game. The Lore Master was overpowered but is easy to tweak to put it more on par with a standard wizard.

  • @trappyboi8678

@@bloodiedporcelain6320 No? The Sorcerer is the most powerful multi-dip in the game with the Warlock being the most powerful small-dip. The two together are insanely powerful, creating the oh-so-dreaded Sorlock. The Sorcadin (Paladin with Sorcerer) is also widely regarded as one of the most overpowered and meta-gaming multiclasses in the game, behind only the Sorlock itself. The class by itself is also far from weak, a Sorcerer constantly outdamages the other casters if you have any idea of how to manage resources due to their meta-magic completely breaking the rules of Bounded Accuracy.

  • @bloodiedporcelain6320

    @bloodiedporcelain6320

    3 жыл бұрын

@@trappyboi8678 way to completely ignore the part where I said they're good for dips. They're a solid option if you're going to multiclass and the dip class is sorc. But that doesn't make them a strong class on their own. Put a sorcerer in a game against any other full caster (including warlock which gets crap for spell slots but makes up for it in how easy it is for them go get their spell slots back and how many invocations just make spells at will) and they are painfully underpowered. They have the tiniest list of spells known, they don't get many cantrips to balance the lack of spells known, the class's over all spell list is weirdly limited and things you would think "oh yeah sorcerer would totally know that!" they frequently don't know, sorcery points are a cool concept but you don't get enough and they run out quick if you're in a serious fight and some of the metamagic options are just *awful*, and even if you reserve all those points for converting to spell slots, the freaking wizard still basically gets to do the same thing if they get a short rest. There's literally no good reason to go sorcerer over wizard (or cleric if you favor divine soul) as a core 1-20 no multiclass build *other than* flavor. For flavor they are really neat, but on every other count they kind of suck and there's no way around that. A huge part of *why* is because the core class never got play tested the way most other classes did. Its the least popular full caster in most polls done online, and I wish Wizards would get off their asses and fix it, because the *concept* of the class is awesome, the execution just kind of sucks. It needs a revised build like they did for the ranger.

You want to be really crazy with Theurgy? Pick Arcana Domain. At level 14 Theurgy Wizard, you get get access to Arcana's Cleric's level 17 benefit, which is... to get 4 wizard spells; one a piece of level 6, 7, 8, and 9. So your level 14 wizard is getting access to level 8 spells a level early and level 9 spells THREE levels early. PLUS, you're getting an extra slot! That is STUPID broken. But as for the forgotten subclass I'd love to have seen make it to print, I'd have to say the Lore Mastery wizard. At level 2, you get: A) your proficienies in Arcana, History, Nature, and Religion become experise, B) you can use your Int modifier for initiative instead of Dex, C) When your spells do any damage type except bludgeon, slashing, piercing, or psychic, you can change it to any other valid damage type AD NAUSEUM, NO LIMITS, and D) Once per short rest, when one of your spells requires a saving throw, you can change it to a different saving throw. You can make Fireball a Charisma save. WTF. At level 6, you get a sort of metamagic thing. You can spend a spell slot to augment your spell. Using a level 1 slot adds 2d10 force damage, using a level 2 slot increases its range up to A MILE, and a level 3 slot increases the spell save DC by 2. At level 10, once per short rest, you can immediately swap out one of your prepared spells for another one from your spellbook. What utility. At level 14, once per long rest, you can cast any spell of a level you have a slot available for. Any spell from any class. Dude. Lore Mastery is so cheesy it's ridiculous. I want it so bad.

I absolutely loved the Loremastery and Theurgy wizard. Loremastery just oozes with what it means to be a wizard for me, and Theurgy was what allowed me to play the style of necromancer I've always enjoyed. I also really liked the Brute, Monster Hunter, Rune Knight, and Scout fighter. they covered a good broad approach to concepts that I think the fighter needs. Brute was the champion I wanted to play. Monster Hunter had a great old magic, feel to it. Rune knight had some cool abilities and an awesome nontraditional power set, Scout was a really good take on a "martial focused" ranger. Twilight Druid was pretty awesome, save for the nuclear druid shenanigans with magic missile, and the fact the the undead slaying druid dealt necrotic without many ways to kill undead with it regardless of resist and immunity. Other than that it was an awesome idea. Stars druid and wildfire druid are looking on point too. With the exception of finger of death, I really liked the raven queen warlock, I also really like the noble genie warlock and the lurker in the deep. Astral self monk lets me play out my jojo fantasy's and way of mercy just has a bunch of cool and thematic abilities Fey wanderer ranger, and swarm keeper were awesome ranger options that really allowed for cool things with the class. Oath of heroism/glory was cool as all hell and I'm glad to see it coming to the theros book. Oath of the watchers has cool flavor, though I wish it was against all "Outsiders" rather than just the bad ones. They feel like awesome cosmic balance paladins and I think should be expanded as such. to me the phoenix sorcerer was okay, but it didn't get enough for an elemental focus sorcerer, Aberrant mind was pretty cool though. Wild soul barbarian I partly liked, but the beast barbarian is really cool. Technically not UA but the Zeal domain is still my favorite cleric, twilight was interesting. There were a lot of fun idea's over the years that a bit of fine tuning would make truly amazing.

I could see adding Only the domain spells being a fair balancing compromise. Then again, just about every other full spellcasting class already has a published subclass that gives access to the whole cleric list to learn (or can freely pick a small number of spells from any list), so maybe it really wouldn't be fair. Possibly just make it only the domain spells with them always prepared as per the normal domain spells feature, but as a tradeoff they're not added to your spellbook? They'd still be adding even more versatility, but at least they wouldn't be eligible to benefit from slot-spending-free ritual casting and it'd also mean the minutia of having spells in your spellbook that can't be copied is bypassed. That one aspect raises too many questions anyway. Like, as it's written, what if the theurgy wizard learns a domain/cleric spell that's also on the wizard list? Can it still not be copied by another wizard? Feels too game-y to have a spellbook like that.

Speaking of UA subclasses. What does everyone think of the Wizard Lore Mastery subclass? Everyone says it’s OP, and I can see the reasons why. Casting a level 1 magic missile and doing 3(1D4+1)+6D10 force dmg that auto hits. Which I strongly recommended talking to your DM and negotiating terms of when if at all it can be used. I would allow such a thing only in already one sided fights, clean up, or in emergency use which is also determined by said DM. Besides the auto nuke, I personally think it’s a good class for the wizard because they don’t have much that stems far from spells and int base things. And this class improves both areas greatly and gives it more versatility with certain spells. Like dmg based spells and spells that require a buff of dmg, range, or a spell that you really want to work to turn a losing battle. It really gets under my skin that most of the dmg spells we cast are either resistant or immune to most if not all enemies we face. That is my personal opinion of it, but it’s always up to the DM whether it’s ok or not. So don’t be that guy who says their going to be a wizard and reveal the subclass last sec.

For a very brief period of time, I played a Paladin/Warlock multiclass with the Treachery Paladin. She was effectively a Conquest Paladin before breaking her oath, in service to a cult of demon worshippers, and once breaking it, became obsessed with slaughtering the cult and her former demon master. The Warlock patron was homebrew, but was effectively the leader of the Wild Hunt, using her talents for carnage in service of hunting the biggest game. She wasn't... Good, but she was a reasonably affable person, if a bit bloodthirsty. ...Then after three sessions of intense political debate and stifling travel, she smells war on the wind, summons her steed, charges off into the distance, launches herself off her mount, activates her Fallen Aasimar aura, and mows down a couple of enemies... Before being summarily executed because she went in alone and the rest of the party was sauntering along. We wete dying laughing. That was the shortest I've ever played a character.

Number one unpublished UA subclass for me is paladin Oath of Treachery. I think it was dropped because the fluff overlapped too much with the oathbreaker as a paladin who has abandoned their oath for selfishness and evil, but imo Treachery was a dramatically better implementation of that narratice theme. Oathbreaker's mechanics feel like a straight forward anti-paladin, as selflessly dedicated to evil as a traditional paladin is to good. There is nothing deceitful or selfish in the Oathbreaker's mechanics. Evil stuff sure, buffing demons and devils, animate dead oath spell, frightening burst CD. Again, cool antipaladin stuff, its all about commiting to evil, not abandoning commitment entirely. Treachery, though? Illusory double? Invisibility? Teleport away? Poison? Tricking enemies into hitting each other? Yeah, the Treachery paladin wasn't just villainous, they were *dastardly*, which is just fun, and a way better fit for a paladin who has abandoned their oath for self interest. Sadly there's some balance issues with it, some overcomplicated mechanics. It really needs a second pass to be ready for proper game time, much as the conquest paladin needed and and thankfully got. But I really do think Treachery was on to something fun and cool, touching on a neat and unique play style, and I wish it had gotten the attention it needed.

I too, like the thematics of Earth Sorcery, but I thought the damage bonus thing made little sense. Considering the capstone accomplishment of this sorcerer is likely the Earthquake spell, I think I would change their ability to allow bonus damage equal to your Charisma modifier to prone targets or targets in a fissure of the earth with any spell damage. I too love the Sharpshooter, and I also wonder why it wasn't published! I have a player also playing the Phoenix Sorcerer, and she seems to love it, too. We innovated a juvenile Phoenix familiar she quested with the party to obtain (and cast the spell for), and it helped make up for any deficiency in the class itself. Theurge is perhaps a bit too good, you get most of the awesomeness of Cleric, especially for the Life Domain, and get those awesome heals. Then also Healing Word with Wizard Cantrips to back it up? Not much wrong with that.

I once played a Rune Knight Fighter Goliath, and while it could do some really insane stuff (With some help from the Sorcerer casting Enlarge/Reduce) it was never overpowered. The Runes were comparable to Action Surge and Second Wind, great abilities, but one-time use and never game-breaking. An example of this is the Frost Rune, which gives you a +2 to Strength for 10 minutes upon use. So, you get an extra +1 to your Strength modifier basically. Good, but not broken. The other one was the Cloud Rune, once per short rest, I could re-direct an attack targeting me to damage someone else except the attacker, so a good ability that can stop an especially powerful attack, but not broken.

I *AM* the fireball! xD Ice Knife is great for getting a high single target hit with a secondary AoE burst (though the AoE in that case will not be boosted by Harvest's Scythe, but casting it at a higher level does boost the AoE that way.)

I played a sort of powered up version of the Protection Domain. Radiant defense was turned into a bonus action and it added 1d10 + cleric level temporary hp to the target. Once depleted, it did 1d10 radiant damage to whoever depleted it. It paired amazingly well with a low AC frontliner like a barbarian, but having it be a bonus action is probably too powerful unless you add the restriction that you cannot cast a spell of 1st level or higher on the same turn you use it. I actually like shield of the faithful. You shouldn't have to multiclass to get something that thematic. As for critiques: Blessed healer is uninspired and I don't necessarily like warding bond or protection from evil and good. Warding bond is just not the best to have on your healer and I think your should be allowed the versatility of shield of faith over pfe&g especially given how the latter requires fairly expensive holy water to even cast. Ultimately, I love this subclass. The very idea of proactive rather than reactive support is awfully appealing. Wall of Force + Sacred Flame also allows for some cheeky combos considering the latter ignores total cover.Even two of the things I dislike, warding bond and blessed healer, kinda word well together. I just think it missed the opportunity to use temporary hp more.

i think sharpshooter was discarded because it steals too much from feats. no disadvantage when a target is within 5 feet: that's part of crossbow expert, a feat you'd need if you wanted to use crossbows and not lose all your extra attacks. ignoring half and 3/4 cover, that's the sharpshooter feat. though if they changed the wording to ranged weapon attacks i think it would actually be quite a worthwhile subclass (and definitely better then the arcane archer) as suddenly you could also be the thrown weapon master. not locked into a dex build if you bring enough axes (fuck yea, this is how you make a dwarven ranger), or you pick up tavernbrawler and become proficient with improvised weapons and start trowing glasses, chairs, tabbles, enemies. some fun potential.

@sum body Player's Handbook rules on concentration, whenever you take damage while concentrating you must make a concentration save to maintain it. Smite damage is added to your attacks damage and thus is a single save but does get doubled by a crit. Green Flame Blade can cause 2 saves, 1 on hit and 1 to whoever the flame jumps to, if applicable. Booming Blade can cause 2 saves, 1 on hit and 1 on their next turn, if they willingly move. Ice Knife can cause a very high number of saves, 1 if the attack roll hits it's target and 1 to every target that fails the saving throw. There is an important distinction between an effect being added on to something else and something happening that is followed up by an effect. This poison damage effect specifically happens after the attack, therefore it cannot crit but does cause a concentration save.

Sharpshooter was probably partially scrapped for the same reason as the Protection domain, their lvl 3 ability is something that partially overlaps with the Sharpshooter feat(which is something you are basically guaranteed to take with this fighter anyway, so it's kind of redundant), specifically the "ignores half and three quarter's cover". The lvl 10 ability has half of the Crossbow Expert feat; not getting disadvantage when shooting with an enemy in melee. Though, the biggest problem is the lvl 18 ability. With this, on the first round of combat, a Sharpshooter fighter could launch 8 attacks in a single round(10 at lvl 20)each dealing an extra 11(12 at lvl 20)damage. Assuming 20 dex, you're dealing 128(170 at lvl 20!) damage without accounting for magical weaponry nor accounting from the dice of the ranged weapon in question! This amount of damage is absolutely ridiculous. Adding in the Sharpshooter feat and each attack will deal 26 damage(27 at lvl 20)before taking into account what weapon you're using. If you were to have something as simple as a +2 longbow, a lvl 20 Sharpshooter Fighter could deal 290 + 10d8 in a single round(not counting crits), which, again, is utterly insane. If the fighter in question is an elf with the Elven accuracy feat and an Oathbow, they can simply give themselves advantage on any really potent enemy, making their attacks extremely likely to hit and ending with a total of 270 + 10d8 + 30d6 without accounting for critical hits.

Agree with number 1, wanted to make that broken warforged Archivist/Theurgy Wizard combo. He had a bandito ammo belt across his chest filled with scrolls >.

I once saw a homebrew warlock invocation that let you use Mold Earth to summon a rock spike out of the ground that deals slashing, bludgeoning or piercing damage, would be pretty fitting for the Stone sorcerer

A dragonborn Stone Sorcerer sounds SO cool

I can confirm that the stone sorcerer falls flat in reality even though the theme's cool. I played one in a campaign, I was an earth genasi stone sorcerer. Even with me mostly pulling 'stone spells' from the elemental evil supplement it still never felt like I knew what my character's identity was mechanically or thematically and in the end me and the DM ended up writing that character out. The problem I think is that a lot of the skills push you towards a 'gish' playstyle, but realistically, a blade pact sorcerer does that fantasy way better. I felt the AC buff and the weapon proficiency's were cool, but pulled away from that 'earth bender' feeling. I really want that fantasy of using the earth to keep enemies away by knocking them prone around more or creating difficult terrain making it impossible for them to close the distance, rather than having to tank attacks on the chin, but never found this classes kit was able to meet that fantasy. I'd also have liked the ability to summon weapons made out of stone, rather than getting shield proficiency, but again, that's really stepping on the warlock's toes.

I play a seeker warlock, it was my first D&D character. I like the concept and the character, but we almost never take down time or spend time in towns because our party is so oversized we haven't finished a dungeon in over a year and a half...and puzzles and mysteries are usually brute forced past. Any time there's some mysterious ancient knowledge to uncover we're always on a time limit of the room about to collapse, a ritual to revive a mummy lord about to be finished, or villagers about to be sacrificed. Never get to do anything with my pact other than use my star chain once a day usually to just roll two 8s on an investigation check and say "Well there goes that class feature for today.
